On Iron Man 3.
"I think Shane Black was the perfect guy for [Iron Man 3] because it's so funny, it's so Shane but I think people associate him with Snark and he's actually a very heartfelt storyteller. This is the next thing that needed to be said about Tony Stark. [The film's] not just coasting on goodwill, [Shane's] really digging in there, it's very much his movie and I love it."

On whether Joss feels any pressure heading into Phase II.
"Honestly, it's the best kind of feeling. I read the script [for Iron Man 3] and I just got scared. I was like, 'Oh, I gotta do better. I gotta up my game because Shane is really bringing it.' (sic) Everything [Marvel] is doing for Phase II is exciting to me but this was the furthest along when I jumped back in [to begin work on Avengers 2] and I really thoughy, 'Wow, [Shane's] really taken it to another level.' He and Robert, like they did in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, they work together amazingly."

Based on Warren Ellis' Extremis storyline and following the box-office shattering events of Marvel's The Avengers, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has become the target of global terrorist The Mandarin (Sir Ben Kingsley) who has secretly been the mastermind behind most of the tragedies in Tony's life. Isolated from his fellow Avengers, Tony will have to devise his most advanced armor yet if he hopes to save the woman he loves, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). Standing beside Tony as he takes on Mandarin's villainous allies and Ten Rings subordinates will be War Machine James Rhodey (Don Cheadle) who was conspicuously absent during the Chituari invasion in New York. Based on a screenplay by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) and Drew Pearce (Godzilla, Sherlock Holmes 3).

Although I didn't think the Avengers could be topped by anything except the Avengers 2, I think Iron Man 3 was my favourite Marvel movie so far. Absolutely LOVED it.

@MrSpock

Fair point. The twist won't bother me either, I still don't know who the Mandarin is, hell I've only read one comic book ever(Long Halloween). But still, it's really low to blatantly spoil a movie like that.

@MrSpock

Me personally, I don't care about the result of the twist, it is that the jackass spoiled it for me. I'm sure I would have thoroughly enjoyed it, but now I know what is coming.

Mr. Spock, I'm just annoyed that the movie's twist was ruined. I could give two shits about the character in the movie, in relation to the character in the comic. They are two different universes.

This is a movie, and the ending has been ruined.

@FlashhGordon27 Amen! At first I was disappointed at how good the movie could have been without the twist but after watching it a second time I saw that everything just fit together perfectly and made sense.

In the Iron Man comics in the 60's, the Mandarin wasn't a racist joke, but rather what we know would consider a racist stereotype. The Mandarin was a cheesy villain based upon a stereotype that would never be accepted in the modern world. The new films HAD to change the character to appeal to modern audiences or he could not have been used.

I haven't seen the IM3 film yet, and I'm glad I have not seen whatever twist y'all are talking about. But those people complaining that modern versions of comic book heroes look too different from their movie versions are blind to the fact that an accurate portrayal of many of these heroes and the matching villains would look stupid if they were accurate to the comics.

jrp6048 - 4/25/2013, 8:36 AM
I don't think it boils down to being an exact replica of the comics because if it was then all fans would know exactly what happened and would scream that shit out in the theaters and then the rest of the audience would be pissed. It comes down to making a movie that everyone, fans and the general public, can enjoy, including twists, and a majority of movies have a twist. So here is mine, Iron Man 3 has a [frick]ing twist. Don't ruin it for everyone, if you don't like go stand in the corner for a while, and leave everyone else alone. So F(rick) off all you trolls

Just seen im3 and was really disappointed with The Mandarin. It ruined the film for me but I wouldnt come on here and tell people to boycott it!! Pepper at the end of the film was also annoying too and the after credits scene is the worst one to date. No hype for future films just a jokey one. :(

It's kind of funny how the Mandarin thing is not a big deal,but if it was Bane it was the worst thing ever. If that was any main villain for any DC character people would be pissed. I'm not a fanboy of either just stating the obvious.

@DaysGoneBy/FuturePast

I get it your trying to be a troll but there are ways to get peoples reactions to this in a more civilized way. Write an article 2 or 3 paragraphs long explaining you gripe with the movie. I understand you wanted a more comic accurate version of The Mandarin but we all dont get what we want (I wanted a real Bane). Just put SPOILER in the title and rant all you want. I woulda came to your article to see what the spoiler was.
Minato
Minato - 4/25/2013, 9:20 AM
@bfprimetime

I understand and it angers me too. I wanted 10 working rings and Fin Fang Foom but we got what we got. The problem with DC vs Marvel creative liberties is that we know there will be more Marvel movies but we only get one DC movie to look forward to at a time. When they mess anything up thats DC its like the whole company can implode.

Priest

It seems to me that people here forget that this movies are created for a general audience, not for comic book fans in particular. What percentage of the people that will go to see the movie are hardcore comic book fans that will go all nerd rage about the twist? I don't have the exact answer to that question, but I highly suspect that it is a very low percentage.
Minato
Minato - 4/25/2013, 9:29 AM

In just curious as to how they'll use and portray Stark after a seemingly definitive ending to the character according to the full plot synopsis on Wikipedia.

I think it's...the most movie-ish entry in the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I mean that as a really good thing. It does deviate a lot from the material source, but at this point, I really couldn't care less about that; it's an adaptation, after all, and Shane Black in particular has been describing it as just that. And yes, it's not as stylish, or well-polished as the previous entries, and it perhaps does tone down the whole spectacle scope (especially after The Avengers), but in exchange, we get an extremely well-driven character piece, still packed with thrilling action here and there. Quite different tonally to the other Marvel Studios outing, too, but I think it's for the better. I can discuss about it on and on, but it will be hard to keep it spoiler-free - let's just say, it's full of surprises. I've been spoiled beforehand (and I don't mind spoilers), yet some parts still come up as rather unexpected, so...well, I think it's fair to say that it's still got a lot to offer than the spreading spoiler think it does. Whedon is right; it's a Marvel movie on a whole 'nother level, and it does make it clear that Tony Stark is in very right hands, this time. And...yeah, I guess it will be quite a work to top that script!

comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 4/25/2013, 10:18 AM
So they f*cked up the Mandarin, huh? No surprise. I've been expecting that since the first time I saw him brought up here. Sounds like a huge disappointment in that we won't get to see the ten rings being used. The Mandarin's rings were always what made him such a cool and formidable villain. As for this "racist stereotype" garbage? Give me a f*cking break. Mandarin comes from a time before everyone was so f*cking anal and whiney about any slight or imagined "offense" against anyone. I'm glad I grew up in the '70's and '80s, when people had much thicker skin.
