Motley Fool Predicts IRON MAN 3 Will Be A "Billion Dollar Movie"

The investor and financial analysts of Motley Fool have predicted that Iron Man 3 will top a billion dollars at the international box office. That's the investor experts but what do the comic book experts think? Voice your opinion in the comments.

It's no secret that fans are interested in Iron Man 3, but financial website Motley Fool thinks that investors should be interested as well. In a recent video, Motley Fool contributor Tim Beyer has predicted that Iron Man 3 will top a billion dollars. If this is true, it could be the first film of 2013 to hit the coveted billion dollar mark.

Beyer cites excellent casting, the success of the Avengers, inflation, and Disney's intelligent distribution of the film as reasons to count on the film's success.

In a slightly more inflammatory mode, Motley Fool's website has another prediction (and one guaranteed to start flame wars): "This time, Iron Man will crush Spidey." According to Motley Fool, "For all his success, Robert Downey Jr., as Iron Man, has never proven to be as popular as either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, both of whom have played Spider-Man on the big screen." However, they see reason to believe that Iron Man 3 could change all that.

What do you think? Does Iron Man alone have what it takes to hit a billion? Or does Stark need his Avengers buddies to strike it quite that rich?

With everyone now knowing that these Marvel films are connected, even if Iron Man wasn't the reason why they watched the Avengers, they'd probably go see this film, just because it's part of a universe with the character they do like. This mean a huge chunk of the avengers fans will see this film. The film will already do better than the first two for being a sequel, and with the added fame from the Avengers, a Billion dollar gross, isn't a far stretch prediction for this film.
The first two combined grossed over a billion dollars and the avenger grossed 1.5 billion, so I agree with this prediction.

@LEVITIKUZ I agree with everything but the idea of Man of Steel making a billion dollars. It's not a "I like Marvel more" type of thing either. As I see it, the only thing fueling MOS is Nolan's name on the trailers, and the fact that it doesn't look like crap. It will definitely bank, but not as much as Iron Man 3.

My Predictions:
Iron Man 3: 1-1.3 billion
Man of Steel: 600-800 million
Thor 2: 600-800 million
The Wolverine: 500-750 million
Kick Ass 2: 400-600 million

And it'll make a billion just like how the avengers did, through 3D.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the link and for the comments. I'm a huge fan of this site and the comics genre. (Favorite books right now: Hawkeye, Thief of Thieves, and The Massive.)

Regarding IM3 vs Man of Steel: I think both movies will be great fun for fans as well as winners at the box office. But of the two, MoS is more important, because it (hopefully) creates the conditions that lead to a fantastic Justice League film.

Far as the math behind the prediction: We've seen about 20% inflation in comic book grosses over the past couple of years, which is why studios have agreed to do more of these sorts of films. Mix in the increased popularity of IMAX and other premium showings and you've got the makings of a billion-dollar formula.

That's my take anyway. Keep it up, CBM. Love what you guys do.

Foolish best,

Tim Beyers
