"The funny thing is, not much of the final suit is actually metal. In fact, they are comprised of many different materials, such as fiberglass, plastic and silicone. In addition to making these suits as convincing as possible as metal machines, our goal is to make sure the actors are comfortable inside them. The suit can’t look stiff or respond to the actor’s movements in a clunky way. They need to offer a full range of movement, and comfort so as not to inhibit the actor’s performance. Each piece of the suit is then grown on our 3D printer, and sent to the shop for molding and casting." - Legacy Effects

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3″ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 was directed by Shane Black, from a screenplay written by Drew Pearce. The film opened in theaters May 3, 2013. It stars: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin.

Great pics. Nice to see the making of practical effects from movies.
Iron Man armors are pieces of art in my opinion.

The armor from The Avengers was best armor to date.

I really enjoyed the heck out of Iron Man 3, and all of the suits made for this film just make it even better.

I still like Iron Man 2's briefcase suit the most. There's something about turning a briefcase into a walking tank that's so FREAKING AWESOME!

@blackjack

True. But that last action sequence did last a long time. It just didn't show us enough badass armor stuff.

@BlackJack10

They did show a few in action but if they showed anymore, the movie could have been a lot longer than it is. Still enjoyed the final battle though :D Just didn't like some of the CGI on the extremis soldiers, looked like a video half the time they were fighting the armours, still cool fight scenes though :)

I actually enjoyed Iron Man 3, but I do understand some of the frustration against it. One of my less significant complaints would have to be the way the action was staged/choreographed.

Marketing did a good job at getting you pumped up to see all of these fantastic new suits. It made me anticipate actually seeing them do their own specific thing. However, when the movie came out you hardly got to see what each of their special features was. They were just whizzing around, attaching and detaching themselves to Tony, not really doing much more than a repulsor blast or two. It just seemed like there was a lot of potential that was unused, and it's unfortunate because the movie had the budget to add thosespecial little details (in fact, I remember reading an article stating a budget increase for IM 3 due to the Avenger's success).

I do understand that with 42 suits, there's not enough time to show case every suit, but still. Can't wait to buy the blu ray though.

Great to see how the cool, yet ultimately pointless, and superfluous suits were made.

2 minutes of screen time and blown up. None of them stood out in any meaningful way.

Practical effects for a great movie. Good way to complete Tony's story Arc.I was hoping the it would be revealed that the Mandarin was behind his parents "accident", but that wouldn't gell with the "life span" of the drama with Killian.Wonder if we will find out who and why in CA:TWS??

I really like the MK42. Also I felt that I couldn't tell the difference between the real suit and cgi. They really were able to keep the scale. In all the other films the real suit looks much bigger on RDJ but then seems to get tighter during the CGI scenes.

My favorite will probably always be the Mk-V suitcase armor.

Tank Armour (Mark XXIV) will always be my favourite due to the fairly different design compared the original seven. Iron Man 3 had an awesome climax but my only main problem with the ending is that Rhodey really didn't have anything to do. He just saved the president and went off. Had Tony developed the armours for just them two, I think it would have been cooler to see Rhodey and Tony taking on Killian with the battle behind them.

Mark 42 is one of a kind, even for being prototype. Mark 7 was cool and best in Avengers. Real combat suit.
