EDITORIAL: JUSTICE LEAGUE THE MOVIE... Really?

Word today that WB was serious about developing a Justice League movie was met with at least as much derision as it was excitement, many people feeling this was a knee-jerk reaction to the success of The Avengers.

The studio, Variety or Mark Millar can all claim that this has been in development for some time, but the timing does seem a little... convenient.

Whatever the situation, when looking at the notion of a Justice League film it becomes extremely difficult to imagine how it's going to work beyond the action level. Now granted you're in safe territory if you start with Superman as there isn't all that much you need to know about him that isn't already in our collective DNA - though one does have to wait to see what the collaboration of Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder will bring.

Batman? Well, sure, if you're basing it on the interpretation created between Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale, it would be incredible. But THAT take on the character comes to a close with this summer's The Dark Knight Rises, and Bale has made it clear that he won't be continuing in the role without Nolan calling the shots, and Nolan, in turn, has apparently shot his Bat-load. Still, one might be able to assume that whoever would be wearing the cowl would do their best to keep that dark and brooding interpretation alive.

So far, so good.

Green Lantern? Yes, the character starred in a $200 million film that virtually nobody saw, but there remains the image of Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, and it wouldn't be a bad thing at all to have him reprise the role and bring a bit of continuity to a Justice League film. Besides, as he demonstrated in Safe House, Reynolds is becoming more comfortable with action.

The Flash? With no disrespect intended for the comic or the character's fans, as far as the MAINSTREAM audience is concerned, this is a guy who runs fast. And that's it. There is definitely a need to get to know Barry Allen as a man before he is transformed into the scarlet speedster.

Aquaman? Sadly, mostly remembered for Super Friends and the brunt of pop culture jokes ever since, though there's a bit of a cool factor generated from all the movie talk on HBO's Entourage.

Wonder Woman? Probably the easiest of the group to establish without too much background. Plus, not to be a sexist pig, but the costume is the first thing that comes to mind and a woman kicking ass IN that costume is the second. Gina Carano, anyone?

Now WB reportedly has Flash and Wonder Woman scripts in development, but the impression given by reports is that Justice League is likely to precede them. If that is indeed the intent, that's where the problem is likely to stem from.

Naturally the response to WB/DC Entertainment doing individual films leading to Justice League would merely result in the chorus screaming "rip-off," but there is a reason that The Avengers worked for audiences around the world: those audience members came to it with knowledge of who these characters were, whether it was through theatrical or home viewings of the Iron Man films, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America. This, in turn allowed things to move briskly without too much set up of who's who (although they were all given strong introductions). A Justice League film - which should be a full ensemble piece as opposed to Superman and Batman leading the charge with a bunch of supporting players - would be challenged to successfully establish who these people are as individuals before we see them interacting as a team.

What WB/DC has in its aresenal that Marvel simply DOESN'T have, is the World's Finest combination of Superman and Batman. Mainstays as a team for decades on radio, in comics and in animation, these two characters who are so diametrically opposed yet inextricably linked, would, under the right creative hands, ignite the big screen in a live action adventure. Maybe a similar pairing from Marvel is slipping my mind, but somehow Luke Cage and Iron Fist don't bring with them the same cache.

On paper a Justice League movie may sound ideal corporately speaking, but there would be much more to be gained in the long run by bringing Superman and Batman together initially, which could in turn pave the way for an expanding DCU on the big screen.

Understandable, nice article. But I have to say, there needs to be individual movies before they can go into the Justice League.

If they do the Marvel method and give each character their own movie and bring them together afterwards, this could work really well. But if they just head right into Justice League without establishing them for audiences, it will only prove WB does not care about the audience or the characters and are only in it for the money.

The reward will be great if they build a DC movie universe. I just hope that they're listening and taking notice.

but the problem is with your editorial is that, marvel had to introduce the characers first because, nobody knew who ironman was or thor, or hawkeye, or black widow or nick fury

but flash, wonder woman, superman, batman, and aquaman are all houshold names, DC made a Green Lantern movie because nobody really knew who that was, or what his powers were

hell, the avengers weren't even something most knew about until this year, but if you don't live under a rock, then you know who the justice league is, and it hasn't had a movie

Great...we get to regurgitate everything from the other thread again. :-P

Flash film is going to happen. Bank it.

"Gina Carano, anyone? "

God no! After watching Haywire with my lady, we were both unimpressed and turned off by Carano. She can kick ass. That's about it. She sounds and looks way too masculine for the most part to play the Amazonian princess.

Reboot Batman, then make Worlds Finest, introduce Darkseid as an impending threat in WF, and then make Bats and Supes the Nick Fury's of the DCCU.

Thats my thoughts on the whole JLA idea.

"but flash, wonder woman, superman, batman, and aquaman are all houshold names, "

That still doesn't mean you can throw them together in a 2 and half hour film and expect it to make sense without any actual character development prior. Your asking an awful lot for one film.

DC Entertainment has done nothing to inspire confidence so far and despite being a good funny book writer Geoff Johns is out of his depth.

Ah, whatever. I don't care now. Let DC do what they want. Ain't my $200M. If TDKR succeeds, Warner Bros. might up the quality on their films like 20th Century Fox did after Avatar.

I vote no for Gina Carano, do not get me wrong the chick is fine as all get out, she can fight, but her acting is medocore for Wonder Woman. I say they get Lynn Collins from John Carter of Mars she is not only Exotically Beautiful but she can act and she has a black belt and is an expect with swords(Which Wonder Woman uses).

gamecreatorjj, people may know the names Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and (presumably) Cyborg, but the mainstream audience simply doesn't know them as CHARACTERS. They don't know who Barry Allen is, or Arthur Curry's background and forget about Cyborg. Yes, they're iconic characters but there is no depth behind the iconography for most people. That's what individual movies would do. In my opinion.

I wonder what characters they will choose to put in the movie , I mean they have to have wonder woman, batman, superman, and the flash. Wonder if they will stop there.

AIGALAN
AIGALAN - 6/6/2012, 6:55 PM
They really should just do a Worlds Finest film first. I'm sure with just having Superman and Batman team up will rake in a ton of money plus they can lay the foundation to bring in other characters specially if in the Flash films they drop hints of the other leaguers. A straight up JLA film from the start snds bad unless its a 3 hour film and it doesnt feel rushed nor crammed.

Are we all forgetting here that this is WB we are talking about? That they dish out the cbms at a turtles pace? If the movie is not attached to nolan, snyder, or batman, superman, its sh*t. I say dc should give the movie rights of their characters to any deserving studio interested. F*ck give marvel studios a few characters. Then we may actually see a dr. fate or spectre film. Not a superman/batman reboot. Justice league film!? Not gonna happen.

Focusing on developing the Flash and Wonder Woman in other media (except live television)

Meanwhile develop the most awesome script and production for a Justice League Trinity movie ie. Superman, Batman and WW. This would separate DC from Marvel and be a great platform to introduce Flash. Maybe include a cameo from GL.

Then follow up with Justice League.

If I were king...

for once they should really start doing this adaptation. Avengers paved the way for what was a real comic book movie adaptation should be and i think it could also work for a JL film.
doodmanbro
doodmanbro - 6/6/2012, 7:01 PM
my advise. just wait. they have gone this long without a jla movie. so just wait about 5 years. DONT RUSH THIS! just take your damn time. but its very obvious that they just want a quick buck. but you know what? screw it. just do EXACTLY what marvel did and make a shared universe with a bunch of origin stories
Darkhaven
Darkhaven - 6/6/2012, 7:02 PM
A knee jerk reaction to the crushing success of the Avengers?! Pshaw and guffaw! That's about as likely as DC announcing a gay marital union IMMEDIATELY after Marvel announced one!

gamecreatorjj - 6/6/2012, 6:45 PM

"but flash, wonder woman, superman, batman, and aquaman are all houshold names"

Flash and Aquaman...household names back in the 80s maybe. Today? That's just funny.

Darkhawk8
Darkhawk8 - 6/6/2012, 7:09 PM
@darkhaven I agree bro. Superman and batman are household names today. this is why I think a batman/supes movie would work better. They tried GL and it didn't work. just go with what works.

A movie that virtually no one saw? It made $220, that's more than a lot.of the movies out there that win academy awards, more than a bunch of other movies, yes it.did fail because of its budget, but $220 million means that a lot of people saw it.
