Jay Baruchel Talks About The Dead 'Justice League: Mortal' Film

Jay Baruchel, who was originally set to play Maxwell Lord in the dead George Miller film 'Justice League: Mortal' talks more about the film!

Of the many interesting things people may have forgotten is that had the WB completed a Justice League film; it would have been released next year. Unfortunately, the film was canceled in April 2008.
The film was well into pre-production with costumes, the cast, and scouted filming locations.

Jay Baruchel (“The Sorcerer's Apprentice”) was one of the many actors cast for the film, he would have played the villainous Maxwell Lord. In fact, his co-star on 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' Terese Palmer had also been cast as Talia al Ghul.
Here is an interview Digital Spy had with Baruchel relative to the dead film:

Digital Spy: You were going to work with Teresa Palmer a while ago on a Justice League movie?

Jay Baruchel: "It's weird talking about it because the blogosphere was not very kind to us - they're looking for anything to s**t on! The two of us were going to do that, it sounds really strange out of context, had you read the script it would have made perfect sense."

Digital Spy: Do you think it would have won around the blogosphere?

Jay Baruchel: "I'll just say this, if we had been able to make the movie that we had gone down [to Australia] to rehearse, if you had seen the production art I'd seen... it would've been the coolest thing ever. It would have been the neatest vision of Batman and the coolest vision of Superman you've ever seen. It would have been dark and fairly brutal and quite gory and just f**king epic."

Digital Spy: What was the problem?

Jay Baruchel: "The problem was that, had it gone to production, it would have been the single most expensive movie in the history of movies. Sometimes people are reticent to spend upwards of $300 million. It was a fun two weeks in Sydney and I got to hang out with one of my idols, George Miller."

Digital Spy: Did you get as far as seeing the Justice League heroes in costume?

Jay Baruchel: "I did. My friends, who were training to be Batman and Superman, they were down there for three months training and going to Weta in New Zealand to get their costumes. Weta, which is arguably the greatest special effects house on Earth, they had to cancel everything else. They were doing nothing but our movie. It was going to be f**king dope!"

Digital Spy: What else did you see?

Jay Baruchel: "They had everything there; maquettes, pre-visualisation, absolutely everything and we had assembled this neat cast. The rehearsal process was so strange and so unconventional and, I know it sounds hard to believe, but I assure you it would have been something f**king awesome!"

It sounds to me like Jay Baruchel might be a little delusional when it comes to this film. I can believe it would have bee awesome but casting teenagers and interfering with Nolan's Batman, really? I (and many of you) will pass on that.

'Justice League: Mortal' would have been released in 2011 with George Miller as a director, and the cast WOULD have been D.J. Cotrona (Superman), Armie Hammer (Batman), Megan Gale (Wonder Woman), Common (Green Lantern), Adam Brody (The Flash), Hugh Keays-Byrne (The Martian Manhunter), Santiago Cabrera (Aquaman), Jay Baruchel (Maxwell Lord), and Teresa Palmer (Talia al Ghul).

Huh? Isn't DJ Caruso the director of Eagle Eye? He's 45, balding, and not an actor. My bullshit radar is going off, if you haven't posted reliable stuff in the past Kaboom I would probably want this to be flagged. Damn right Jay Barachel is delusional.

Luiji@I think he means Cotrona.

I actually wanted this to get made.

It could've been the opposite of what marvels doing make the Team film first then spinoff into there own respected franchises should've gotten Hal Jordan though.

I think what they were going for Maxwell Lord was a Gene Hackman Lex Luthor kind of Character

[frick]ing glad WB scrapped this movie!!!

It would have been like THE AVENGERS with no HANK & JAN = crap lol!

Whew this would have probably ruined any chances of the now filming GREEN LANTERN movie and any future movies like THE FLASH and WONDER WOMAN!

Thank [frick] we never got MORAL, a few years time we'll get an EPIC JLA, will blow even AVENGERS outta the water!!!

Can't wait!

A Green Lantern being played by a rapper. 2 villains being Talia Al Ghul and Maxwell Lord. A latino playing Superman. God I'm happy this never became produced.

Sorry, I thought I said you were reliable. From almost anybody else I would have thought it was bullshit but I believed, that's why I was angry. I wasn't hating on you, I was hating on the movie. That DJ Cortana/Caruso thing is a simple mistake I understand, lol. I still don't like this movie, even if DJ Caruso isnt in it.

Thanks God they realized that this would sucks, DC and Warner Bros should set an universe with Nolan´s Batman, and do it on GL(They must) and then after the next heroes movies a JL movie.

Whatever... The Avengers in 2 years anyway.

I actually kinda think Baruchel could've made a decent Max Lord. It would've been kinda different from the comics sure but I think he coulda pulled it off. People seem to only think he can play the nerd, but I can easily see him taking on on a villinous role. Plus, the plot sounded awesome. God I was so excited for this movie :(

LEEE if they don't have Hank and Janet in it then it won't be right!! :D

@ creature: I totally agree. Common is cool but would seem out of place as John Stewart, for Hal must be introduced first.Secondly, the villain choice is weak. Last of all,did you know that Brandon Routh is latino? But DJ Cotrona looks nothing like superman so yeah i'm glad this movie wasn't made. The best cast choice is Megan Gale she looks like Wonder Woman. :)

@ all,

surprisingly Kaboom did lift the interview accurately from Digital Spy.
Without picking apart the entire cast, the Armie Hammer issue: probably trying to make Batman seem the eldest as he has that sense about him. They put a rug on Keaton, so why not?
The rest of the casting is still up for debate. As I recall, the script wasn't done and that's the larger component of why it wasn't filmed. Everyone that had completed scripts finished their filming before or after the strike. Those that didn't have completed scripts were crippled by the strike. Once again, unions win and overall quality and consistency loses.
