As the credits rolled, I have to admit that I was left with mixed feeling about Kick-Ass. I’ll start off with the positive though. This was one hell of a movie and most definitely up there with The Dark Knight and Watchmen as being one of the best comic book movies ever. I know that Matthew Vaughn has previously been linked to both X-Men 3 and Thor and so I cant help but wonder what amazing things he would have done with big budget movies like them after the fantastic job he’s done with a film made on a fairly small budget. Everything from the huge action set pieces to the smaller moments are well directed and the use of music is the best I’ve seen in a long time. (keep an eye out for the Banana Splits theme, “The Tra La La Song” in Chloe Moretz’s first major scene)

Talking of Moretz, everything you’ve read about her stealing the show is true. She really is a fantastic young actress and probably gives the funniest and most enjoyable performance in the whole film. Mark Strong is also great here and although I’m not the biggest Green Lantern fan I cant wait to see what he does with Sinestro. Aaron Johnson excels as the geeky and awkward Dave Lizewski (with a flawless America accent) and although I had my doubts about Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist, he manages to wash away the memory of McLovin in a few scenes to deliver what will now surely be considered as his most memorable role yet. The rest of the supporting cast also maintains the same high level of quality, especially Lyndsy Fonseca who is another actress that I’d like to see go on to do more. The only weak link for me was probably Nicolas Cage. He was good for the most part but the Adam West impersonation just didn’t do it for me.

So, why the mixed feelings? Well, up until a point, and apart from a few minor changes here and there, this is pretty much a direct adaptation of the comic book series. However, then things are suddenly completely different. Don’t get me wrong, the story still goes pretty much the same way as it did in the comic book but the events that lead there as well as the relationships between some of the characters aren’t even remotely similar. Sometimes this is actually a good thing and sometimes it’s not but I’m sure that’s just the comic book geek inside of me disappointed not to see some scenes I was looking forward to on the big screen! Of course, this is down to the movie being made before the comic series was finished and so I hope the same mistake wont be made with Mark Millar’s latest project, Nemesis.

Still, that really isn’t the end of the world because despite that small disappointment, this is still a kick ass movie (sorry, I had to say that at least once!) and both the friend who I went with who’s never picked up a comic book in his life as well as the audience around me, loved it. If you live in the UK then stop reading this and go an watch the movie. If you live in the US then book your tickets for April 16th now because wherever you are and whenever you get to see this, you’ll love Kick-Ass just as much as I did.

Although I was tempted to knock a star off for the changes made in the second half of the movie, that would be petty and unfair to such a brilliantly acted and excellently directed CBM. Fingers crossed for a sequel…

Great review Josh, and I agree pretty much on everything. The changes didn't bother me too much, I see why the were done. But what did you think of those couple of Wiley Coyote cartoon moments at the end?

SPOILERS AHEAD so dont highlight the white if you havent seen the movie guys!

ROR: Thanks mate! :) You mean stuff like the jetpack and the bazooka sending Mark Strong out the window? They were entertaining but seemed really out of context! Up until that point things stayed pretty grounded in reality as they did in the comic book but that all seemed a little...silly! I mean, it doesn’t bother me all that much but it was definitely one of the main things that left me feeling a disappointed! Perhaps the biggest thing though was the fact that Big Daddy's origin was completely different and the big reveal about him actually being a comic book collecting accountant rather than a cop wasn’t there! I mean, I get why they might have left that out if they thought some mind find it a little complicated or unrealistic but it was a real pity IMO. On the other hand, Dave and Katie actually getting together was something that I thought was better than the end result in the book! Still, it was a great movie and hardly as bad as something like Wanted when it comes to making changes!

I'm actually kind of disappointed to hear that they made changes in the second half. I loved the comics just the way they are ya know? But, i guess i have to deal with it. Just as long as it isnt a rip-off...i'd like to cite X3.

I think some of yall need to hold your reviews until the movie comes out everywhere.. Most of us don't live in Buttain... Oh, I mean UK! My bad, I messed up on my typing there.. :)
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 3/31/2010, 3:37 PM
Minotauro: "Buttain" - wow...hilarious. Why would we need to hold our reviews? There's not so much as a single spoiler here and no one made you read it. My God, I saw reviews for this film on the internet and in magazines weeks ago and I never whined about it! Expect my Iron Man 2 review a week before that comes out in the US as well. :P

@ Minotauro: Hey, hey...there's no need to sling insults at other countries...

...so what? They get their movies before we do, big deal! Lucky Britts, all I can say. Us 'yanks still gotta wait on this side of the pond, but the movie will be no less impressive for the delay.

Oh, and if you can comment on your bad spelling...you still have access to delete your smear. Try using that, rather than comment on it next time...

@JoshW: From one Josh to another, good job, bud! Looking forward to your Iron Man 2 review the day it comes out over there...and don't let others discourage you!

Tauro, why should we hold back our reviews until the movie comes out everywhere?..I know your reason won't make any sense but I'm curious!

Josh, yep, those bits! Silly really. If the whole film was like that fine but it was just too much of a deviation from the tone.

@JoshW: I saw it today too (Orange Wednesday ftw!) - I agree with all your points and I'll go one step further and say, if you haven't read the comic, like me, have no reservations at all. It's brilliant - funny, exuberant, knowing and, well, you know...

The cinema was packed btw (and has been every day since release last Thursday apparently), and there was a very positive response after it finished - lots of happy, smiling faces - I think this'll have great word-of-mouth and do very well indeed.

Millar haters hold on to your hats, because I predict we'll be seeing - and hearing - a lot more from him.

Nice review Josh.

I never had any doubts about this movie being good, but i hope that the changes from the CB don't affect the overall film too much.

Shame that this movie doesn't come out here till the 16th. The wait is absolutely dreadful.

But it'll all be worth it

ROR: I completely agree! It just didnt sit right with me when you look at everything that happenned before that! It was so out of context and so unrealistic that if I hadnt known the movie had been made before the comic book was finished and accepted the inevitable changes, it would have ruined the whole thing for me! Probably the most suprising thing for me though was Christopher Mintz-Plasse...I really thought that he was the wrong choice for Red Mist but he gave a great performance that showed he's capable of more than just comedies!

KeithM: Lol, you've got to love Orange Wednesdays! :) It was the same where I saw it (Cwmbran) where pretty much everyone seemed to enjoy it. As for the Miller haters, I have no time for them - the guy is a comic book writer who's had the chance to be interviewed in a way that most dont so good on him I say. So what if he talks out of his ass sometimes? (something I doint actually think he does all that much) The guy's a [frick]ing genius! Maybe the Miller haters need to go and take another look at Old Man Logan, Civil War or any of his other stuff to remind themselves of that! ;)

supermarioworldE: Thanks man! I wouldnt say they affect the movie in a bad way...there is just a lot that's different but apart from a few daft moments, the end result is still the same and the movie on it's own merits (forgetting the changes from the comic book) is brilliant!

@Josh

Well I'm fine with a few changes. Good to know that they wont destroy the movie.

Thanks

*** Some minor spoilers possible ***

@Ror & Josh: As someone who hasn't read the comic, I think they built up those 'ott' moments well enough - with the mystery 'package' - what could possibly cost $300k? - and with the wondering just when and how that bazooka - you know it had to be - was going to be used.

Rather than taking us out of the movie, the OTT-ness of those things in particular felt perfectly in tune with the rest of the movie's funnier OTT moments. I was expecting super-human feats or something along those lines from the reaction of some, but although a step up from the low-level street-reality earlier, there was nothing that took us away from the basic premise - that these were regular people with no special powers. When KA appears, you do think "yep - that is pretty cool and it would cost about that much" - and they do exist and if you had enough money you could make one too...

It probably only jars so much for you because it was different to the comics - for me, those moments seemed to flow naturally enough from what had gone before into a properly climactic final scene.

Today is 4/7/2010 and I just viewed a dozen different trailers for the upcoming movie “Kick-Ass”.
This comment is an urgent appeal to every parent reading this. Please protect your kids (older and young) from this devious attempt to pervert our children’s minds and hearts, disguised as entertainment.
I am quite shocked at a few things and I don’t shock easily. The language is hard core and completely un-necessary to tell this story, especially when it requires cursing from a 13 year old girl (Chloe Grace Moretz - born February 10, 1997). Not light cursing, but the kind of filthy cursing that makes you twinge. There are so many young actors in this movie delivering such filth from their mouths. I just sat here at my computer with my jaw hanging as I listened to some of the disgusting words kids were saying. The filth just wasn’t necessary. How perverted can you be to subject our youth to this kind of filth in language. I say “subject our youth to this” because what kid doesn’t want to see good guys beat up the bad guys, so they will find a way to see it. But unfortunately, here the good guys are as bad as the bad guys. Every kid in America will watch it somehow because of the young cast and the fantasy of being a crime fighter.

I am equally shocked at the adult actors that have willingly contributed to the killing of adolescent morals. I thought actors who were also parents had some moral standard for their children’s sake and would only go so far in the type of characters or the kind of movies they would do. I guess I was wrong there!
The nudity that was shown in a trailer was a deliberate effort to entice the viewer into thinking there was more to be seen. Again, this whole movie is simply an evil attempt to pervert the minds of our young.
Even the graphic killings and mutilations that kids were performing is disturbing to me. I don’t want my children ever thinking that murder is entertaining. A 13 year old, killing people with a sword. Imagine that!
The guys who are responsible for this script and this movie (and I do mean they are responsible for all of the affects this movie will have on the minds of our young) are nothing less than people who have prostituted themselves for the sake of the almighty dollar, at the cost of our children and our society.
I know that some people will say that the “R” rating protects children, but that is pure garbage. In the technological age we live in, our young and even small children have a multitude of devices and places to gain access to this and other movies that should never have been made. It’s not entertainment when it erodes the very fabric of a decent society… in fact in the minds of the moral majority, its criminal!
Lastly, I will say to the creators of these kinds of movies, this script could have been a really great adventure story for kids. But instead it is a horrible, blatant attack to further destroy the moral standard of our lives through our young. And greater still, it is another piece of a large agenda in Hollywood to destroy the moral character of our future generations, so that their standards will be more accepted.
But I say, change your minds, not ours!
These are the people responsible for creating this filth. Boycott anything they do:
Matthew Vaughn – Director
Jane Goldman, Mark Millar and Matthew Vaughn – writers
Nicholas Cage – Actor - He has always been my favorite, but I can no longer support anything he does! He is the only big name actor here but the other actors also deserve to be boycotted. What a shame!
Rest of the cast: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1250777/fullcredits#cast

PLEASE DO NOT SEE THIS FILTHY MOVIE!
