I think this is the first coverage we have given this movie. Its certainly the first I have heard of it..and the comic its based on for that matter.
Anyway, the movie already has a cast, a writer, and a director. Magdalena chronicles the adventures of a direct descendant of Mary Magdalene named Patience who protects the world against evil using a variety of supernatural powers. Writing the script is Holly Brix (The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations) and set to direct is Japanese filmmaker Ryûhei Kitamura, who made his US debut with The Midnight Meat Train. Set to star as Patience is Step Up actress Jenna Dewan, along with Luke Goss as her mentor, Kristof.
Even though screenwriter Holly Brix hasn't officially began writing the script, here's her take on how the movie will go..
"Obviously, I read all the comics and we talked about different versions of the story, but the one I found most compelling was Patience—her arc in becoming the Magdalena. We decided to focus the movie on her. It's the transfer of power from her mother's reign as the Magdalena to hers,"
The movie is being touted as a mix between "The Davinci Code" and "Wanted". Brix feels thats pretty accurate..
"I do [think it is]. It's definitely a supernatural action movie, so I think Da Vinci Code is a good reference as far as all the Catholicism in it. But in addition to that story, it's also a really straightforward action movie. There's not a lot of secret codes to unlock and that sort of thing."
