Samuel L. Jackson On A NICK FURY Solo Film And Race Change

We all know by now that Samuel L. Jackson is game for reprising his role as Nick Fury in his own solo film, and he keeps expressing his interest. He also discusses race change in movies and says he expected more fan outrage over Fury's change than what we got. Check it out...

Back in 2008 Samuel L. Jackson gave many people a nerdgasm when he appeared during Iron Man's post-credits scene as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Nick Fury. Now he continues to star as the character in many of Marvel's MCU films. But the one movie he hasn't starred in is his own solo film. We all know that Fury starred in many solo adventures in the comics, but how well would that work on film? In an interview with MovieFone, Sam Jackson says: Oh, I'd love to do a Nick Fury film, but it would probably involve all these people also in the same way. I mean, the "Iron Man" standalone is kind of different. But, I mean, Nick being Nick and where he is in terms of S.H.I.E.L.D. and all this other stuff, I always imagined that there would be some of these other people involved in that somewhere and in some way. It would be interesting to find out what they think his development was. I often think about his relationship to Cap. He's sort of ageless. Right now I'm not real sure, because, you know, the Nick Fury I remember was a guy with a patch in World War II or whatever. So how old is this dude? And why is he still around and so vital?

He was also asked about why he thinks there isn't as much outcry over the change in race to Nick Fury as there was to that of the announcement that Michael B. Jordan would be playing The Human Torch in Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot. However it may not be a fair argument considering Nick Fury actually was black in the comics during Marvel's Ultimate reboot. Jackson says: I was surprised that there hadn't been more outrage or outcry, but I guess the audience now that's watching these films -- a lot of them haven't gone back in that comic book history to see that, you know. When somebody says David Hasselhoff played Nick Fury, people kind of dismiss it as, "Well, that had to be f**ked up because David Hasselhoff did it." So, they don't see it that way, but yet, still this week, I look online and, you know, now people are all bitched out because Quvenzhane (Wallis) is playing Annie (in the new film version of the musical "Annie"). It's kind of like, it's a f**king fantasy, you know. People do this kind of thing all the time. It's another iteration of Annie so accept it or don't accept it. You can check out Samuel L. Jackson next appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, opening in US theaters this Friday.

Difference is...

There was a African American NICK FURY in Marvel Comics, what FOX is doing is wrong and only doing it to hype up the damn movie and its not just that casting but near the whole movie is going in the wrong direction, gonna make the last two look like masterpieces.

I'd be pissed off if BLADE turned white or Dr Doom turned female, ugh wait :p.

THE THING casting sucks too, stupid lazy casting.

Make mine MARVEL STUDIOS ;)

The films can do whatever they want.

Yeah that's the problem @ TheMexicanSupermanBangsScarlettJohansson and no shit lol.

Look at WATCHMEN, near perfect cbm, but ofc they can't all be like that but if your gonna change the whole character then make new ones because it just takes you out of the whole damn movie these characters you grew up with changed for no reason, just cause they can.

Yeah MOS wasn't awesome (which it should have been), shame that lost the magic of what Superman is all about.

Of course though, Cavil was awesome ; D

"So accept it or don't accept it".......oh so your ok with saying that until someone says that they don't accept it, then you say "it's just a [frick]ing fantasy".......gosh your a smart one Jackson....

TDKR was a pile of shit agreed @ Kev!

True borefest full of flaws and they crapped all over the Bat characters towards the end. I tried watching it a second time and it was too painful could only get halfway through and that's a record for me, loved TDK and BEGINS but RISES was such a damn let down, glad we had AVENGERS that year that wiped its ass, hell so did DREDD!

As for the solo NICK FURY movie, awesome can't wait!

Just hope it shows how big S.H.I.E.L.D actually is, something AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D never will because of the budget and it being TV of course.

KEV @ Love to see an INVADERS movie at some point!

I reckon Marvel might in the future, probably wait till they have the rights back for NAMOR. Just be cool though to see a MARVEL STUDIOS take on Torch, talking about the Original Human Torch of course, that would be amazing and make it like the WATCHMEN flashbacks of the Minutemen and you got a winner and expand the MCU even more!

Hoping GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is the biggest cbm this year fingers crossed, deff looks the most fun.

Given the ultimate universe influence in the movie verse, it's not suprisingly they went with a black nick fury
Human torch on the other hand doesn't look remotely close to his comicbook counterpart...

If you have an issue with a fake persons race, that says way more about your own insecurity than anything else. If the actor or actress is good, and the script is good then I dont give a rats @$$ what race they are.

The reason getting pissed about this kind of casting is inherently racist, is that the people complaining can't see through race to find the merits of the actor toward the role. Not being able to see through race is racist in itself.

@Jediphilosopher what you are talking about drastically changes the character, Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Diana Prince, Johnny Storm, all of these characters aren't defined by their race or their hair color, to say that they are is an insult to the writers who have worked so long on shaping these character's individuality. To only look at race without taking the role itself or merits of the actor in consideration is most definitely racist. Look at Micheal Keaton and 80's Bruce Wayne, they look drastically different, same with Spider man and Toby Macquire. Chris Evans looks nothing like Johnny Storm. Paying attention only to how they look in the face is nothing but a knew jerk reaction without putting any reasonable thought into it.

For the record, I do not want to see a non African American Cyborg or an alien Reed Richards, male version of Lois Lane etc etc.

Its not just the Torch casting, its pretty much the whole damn movie and its at FOX?!? Seriously a true Marvel fan wants this property back at MARVEL STUDIOS where FF belong, ppl are just dumb bringing in the race card all the time... what if STORM or BISHOP got changed Caucasian or Asian?

Yeah right... bottom line you got people who care about our CBM's and them that bend over for any old shit Hollywood makes.

Forget the Torch for a minute, everything else screams wrong with this movie and its going to be forgotten a week after its released pretty much like the remake Robocop flop was.

Glad I didn't pay my hard earned $$$ to see that.

@LEEE777 You and I and everyone else knows 6 things about this film. All 6 are people. 3 for sure great Actors, a director who hasn't had a chance to mess up yet and a decent writer. So don't go saying all signs point to shit.

A true Marvel fan wants this movie to be the best film ever made and win the Oscar for best picture because a true Marvel fan wants all Marvel properties to prosper and flourish.

At least they are trying to change things up in the CBM world, I don't know how many more all white superhero teams I can take. Age of Ultron will have an 8 person team and every single one is of the same race. Is that not a problem to you?

So many freaking hypocritical comic book purists. What can i say that the other people in this comic section who aren't purist already said but of course the purist will ignore. The movies and comics are different things. People have no problem when the comics to an alternate universe story where they change things about the character but when the movies do it which is still an alternate universe purist freak out. It's an adapatation just like comic book writers they put their own stamp on the character they tell their own story they change what they want for THEIR story and as long as the movies good who cares what they change. You have no problem when the comics do it but apparently the movies aren't allowed. Lets hate the great X-Men movies like X1,X2 and First Class because they're not accurate to the comics despite being great movies. It's an adapatation just like basically every run on a comic book character has been. If you can't accept the change and just enjoy a good movie then stop watching the movies and just read the comics. If not then watch the movies and quit the F******** bitching.

gamecreatorjj @ No, I'd love to see a MILESTONE movie from Warner Brothers with STATIC SHOCK, ICON and all the rest as long as they ain't bastardized from their comic book characters!

I'd love to see a new Green Lantern movie with John Stewart as the main guy!

BLADE btw is one of my top cbm franchises.

Great X-Men movies, that's a joke lol.

If it wasn't for us that spend spend spend our $$$ on these comics and support them through the years, there would be no movie of them in the first place ;)

I'd rather a Nick Fury solo film rather than a Black Widow solo film. Although i dont know if it would be a good idea. Although i'd be willing to give every Marvel Studios film a chance because it's a branded label that not only i trust but the public trusts too.
