I remember when I first came to this site. It was 2005 and I was in 7th grade, playing around in the school computer lab when I should have been typing a paper on the age of the Renaissance. One Google search led to another, and before long I was on this “comicbookmovie” website that claimed a “Namor the Sub-Mariner” movie was right around the corner. We can all have a good chuckle at that now.

At this point, the only two powerhouse franchises were really Spider-Man and X-men, of which two movies of each series had been released. So CBMs weren’t exactly all the rage that they are now. The community was small back then. Even I didn’t make a username until a few years in, but despite that, the atmosphere and shared passion on this website was like nothing I’d seen before. As a middle schooler, I’d kept my superhero obsession mostly under wraps, so naturally it was nice to swap opinions with fellow fanboys while analyzing what made these movies and characters great or not so great. Of course I grew out of that ashamed phase, when I started going to every Halloween party dressed as Robin, evidence by my avatar photo. My point is that CBM drew me even further into genre fiction, far enough where I set out to create my own.

While in a college English class, I was given the assignment, to retell a fairy tale from another point of view in a 20-page paper. Most kids frowned, but I didn’t. At CBM, I think we’re all familiar with the process of a franchise reboot. Some elements of these epic sagas don’t hold up a half-century later, while others are more relevant than ever before. This is how I would view this paper. Not as an assignment, but an opportunity.

I ended up with a prequel to the story of Snow White with her father being the storied “Man in the Mirror.” It was definitely a more masculine take, but with it’s fair share of romance. My professor loved it, and encouraged me to press on and continue the story I had started. So I did. But it wasn’t easy. It takes some serious passion to immerse yourself in writing a full-length novel, a passion bred largely part by this website.

Three months later, I had this 70,000 word manuscript. I was advised to draft it a few more times, then pitch to agents and publishers alike. So I did. After about a hundred rejections, a publishing company finally took the bait and now I’m seeing that story that started out as a school paper get published at last.

It’s not crazy to think the articles we pour over here aren’t just news. I don’t know if you’ve realized, but going through the comment sections, there are some deep, wonderfully critical thoughts on here, thoughts that are now impacting the very entertainment we watch, as evidenced by the stars and filmmakers themselves. Don’t be afraid to use your passion for these characters to create your own stuff! I’ve seen some great additions to the Fan-Fic section over the years and you guys are good! I’ve also watched this site grow from the little engine that could to a real powerhouse, and I’ve grown up alongside it.

Now I’ve just graduated college, about to make the big move to LA. You better believe my goal is to be working on one of these CBMs someday. That said, thank you to everyone who makes this site such a joy, and to those whom make its existence possible.

If you want to check out my novel Tainted Glass, it’s available in paperback and e-book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and more!

Sincerely,

theboywonder

Fantastic story. I have a similar story to tell.

I was first introduced to the 60's Spider-man when I was about 13. I loved it. Finally I watched the movies. I loved that as well. I got my hands on a few issues of Civil War and really enjoyed it. I finally found CBM and it was a great place to open up bigger thoughts of checking out more movies other than just Spider-man. I watched Iron Man and TIH and got really excited for Avengers back in 2009. I finally figured out my library had comics and started reading even more.

Now I'm an aspiring graphic novelist who would one day like to create his own comic company.

And mainly it's all due to this site's influence of why I have such big aspirations.

That IS an awesome story! I realize we're not curing cancer here, but it's nice to know our little site is making a positive impact on its readers. Thanks so much for sharing. Makes me feel good.

Everybody go buy Brian's book and make a fellow CBMer rich! Sounds like a clever twist.

Did I roll my eyes after reading your headline? (C'mon..."changed my life"...?) Yes, I did. Did I read the article anyway out of curiosity? Yes, I did. Am I glad I read it? Yes, I am. In the future, when I feel like the snark and venom around here is out of control, I'll recall your story and smile.

Congrats man, I don't comment here too much but it is my favorite to come to! I come here everyday, multiple times a day and I love it. Most people who don't follow this site or comic books/movies in general don't understand what an impact they can have on your life! Its cool to see that some of us are so inspired and have the ability to do their thing! I will be buying this asap! Good luck with everything!

I love this article!

Congratulations Brian!

I have been reading articles and comments from this site since 2006 and decided to join in 2012 due to our favorite member 'Intruder'. Lol!

This communty is amazing and above all other sites including Facebook!
Its nice to see and here from real fans and their opinions.

My life changed when my brother stole a comic book from the local corner shop. My mother sat him down and explained that this should not happen again and if he wanted any more he will have to pay for them from his pocket money.

I remember me sneaking in to his room and looking at the amazing pictures of Marvel and DC characters. When I saw Superman.....I was enthralled into every picture. That moment I knew this would be the character for me.

Its really nice to hear real life stories that comics have had an impact on our lives.

Long live this community and this site!

I can see this turning into a 9 page article.

Great story! As Jim/Galactus mentioned, it's nice to see how those that were with the site in the early days have grown alongside us... Who would have ever thought CBMs would be as big as they are today, or that it would be cool to be a nerd? :o)

When I was unemployed a few years back......I gave a lecture to a group of 45 individuals who have been struggling for inspiration.

I used many aspect of the comic book genre and to change their thoughts and desires we had from our economic structures.

Its amazing how a fictional characters can change people.

We live in a world where every scenario could be deemed to be weird by people like you.

And no.....it was' nt depressing!

Lets leave the negativity to Grif and Intruder.

This article has shown us how we all can aspire to be greater or change to be better.

Don't be a member who has hate......try to be better!

What was the writing process like moving from 20 page paper to 70,000 words? Daunting? Fun? Intense? Easy?
