Composer John Williams Thinks EPISODE IX Will Have More To Say About Rey's Parentage

"I don’t believe it either," said veteran Star Wars composer John Williams about Kylo Ren's (Adam Driver) shocking reveal to Rey (Daisy Ridley) about the 'truth' of her parentage in The Last Jedi.

Appearing on the classic public radio station  KUSC, legendary composer John Williams revealed that he believes that Kylo Ren was lying when he told Rey that her parents were not connected to any of the preceding Jedi/Sith wars from the days of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker.

"Rey’s parents might be identified to us in the next film," said Williams.

When pressed about Ren's admission (or potential omission depending on how Episode IX plays out) Williams added "I don’t believe it either. Rey, of course, is played by Daisy Ridley, who I so loved in The Force Awakens. And last year, when [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy rang me up and said, ‘Would you do the last music for The Last Jedi?’ I said to her, ‘Is Daisy in it?’ and she said yes, so I said yes.

As someone who's been involved with the franchise since its inception in 1977, do you think Williams has an inside knowledge about J.J. Abrams' plans for Episode IX? Abrams will be given free reign to close-out the new trilogy however he sees fit and it's clear in The Force Awakens that he was the setting the stage for Rey to be connected to the Jedi in some form or fashion.

While I may not be the biggest Star Wars fan, I really thought that the parents reveal in the last jedi was well done and a great subversion of the "I was destined to be X because my parents were Y"

@AbidNaga - SUBVERSIVE!

@AbidNaga - Yeah, I never needed Rey to be the daughter or grandaughter or relation through bloodlines to anyone important. The Skywalker situation was a fairly unique one to that family. This "your parents were strong with the force or important, and so you will be" is something best left behind if Star Wars is to progress away from the Skywalker bloodline, and it should. That was one story in a huge galaxy. Other stories will be different. We already know through other SW canon that jedi children are usually born to parents with no special connections to the force at all.
That said, extremely powerful force users need to be explained. How are they strong with the force? Why is the force manifesting so strongly in them? We need this answer for Rey especially, because, look at the evidence, she's abnormally strong.

Her parents shouldn't have addressed in 8, much less again in 9. She'd already come to terms with her lack of parents in TFA with Maz.

@Nebula - I don’t think they really were addressed in 8 I think it was just Kylo trying to manipulate her using her worst fear, but that’s open to interpretation at this point. As for TFA she very clearly wasn’t over her lack of parents as one of the first things we find out about her is that she doesn’t want to leave the planet for fear of missing out on seeing them again and her most powerful memory is being left behind

Nebula - 3/2/2018, 12:33 PM
@Ha1frican - Maz tells her "The belonging you seek is not behind you, it is ahead" meaning, her parents (where she came from) are irrelevant. Kylo, whether he lied or not, saying anything about her parents is 8 addressing her parents, that weird mirror cave was addressing her parents, 8 addressed it.

When someone says that fan theories ruined TLJ, they're absolutely right. But not in the way of 'over hyped expectations' in the way of Rian only answered the question because the fans kept that question alive. As far as the movies were concerned that thread was over.

@Nebula - In a way you are right, "The Last Jedi" felt for a little bit like this suspense bullshit of "Who their parents would be?" when it was clear from the beginning they were no-ones and this franchise needs Rey to be a no one. From the beginning that has been the main theme of this Trilogy:

How this people who were "destined" to be something learn they have free will to choose what they want to be and fight to do it.

In The Last Jedi they add another theme: "This nobodies now can and will become something by their own means"

But in "The Force Awakens" Rey Arc is how she overcomes this inner fear, this issue she has with her parents, Rey believes she is destined to wait for them, that the only thing she can be in life is a Scavanger. She is trap in a state of mind...

Characters like Han, Finn and Maz make her see that is not the case, Rey can do with her life whatever she wants and needs to move on from her fears...

Again the classic case of a character who doesnt see something and another character has to force it to see the other side.

So Rian Johnson in "The Last Jedi" continues this Arc, because Rey never overcomes this issues in The Force Awakens. Rey only decides to take action but she is still afraid and her identity and her search for a father figure, someone who lead her and decide what path she needs to follow in life is something she needs to stop doing and overcome...

That is why the main Arc of Rey in "TLJ" is one of Identity, Rey is fighting the fact she is alone, she doesnt has a destiny or a path and that is fine, is scary, but her and only her can decide what kind of life she will have...

So again this Arc at the end of "TLJ" is complete so Rey is now free of her identity issues. They can touch it again, but what they really should do is make Rey form her own path, do a time jump and show how Rey and Kylo have form their own paths and build their own destiny.

@AleSir19 - I always see you defending the latest Star Wars movies. However, what you say, doesnt explain so many gripes I have with them. Maybe Im a purist but I have so many issues with the new trilogy. If you can explain one thing? Why is Rey so combat ready? Meaning, how can she best Kylo, with no training and no real knowledge of the force? Please dont say Kylo was hurt. Even if he was hurt, Rey is no match for a warrior in training. I guess I just hoped for more of a backstory for Rey in TLJ. I hope they dont shoe horn it in for episode 9. this whole trilogy is a mess. Dont get me started on the pointless mission with Finn and random character among other pointless/useless things in that movie.

They’re is nothing more to say other then the last movie killed a big part of my childhood. I felt used and abused..... and a little dirty.

@Supercat6376 - Same, absolutely. If Solo isn't good, I'm out of Star Wars for good. Third strike. After TLJ I was literally sitting at home thinking "What the [frick] am I doing wearing a Star Wars T-shirt" and grimacing.

@Supercat6376 - I don't blame him, there's no semblance of logic in the movie that you can follow. These videos are absolutely worth a watch. Before I watched them I just thought "I didn't like the movie, it's bad to me" but after watching them I'm like "No, this is objectively an awful movie"

@Nebula - I respect your patience. For me the last nail in the coffin was when Emo Kylo killed Han. I got up of my seat, cursed JJ out loud and left the cinema.

@Nebula - I'm on the half of the second part. I based my questions based on other critique videos, articles and snippets of this trollogy.
