As the screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, and the Han Solo anthology film, Lawrence Kasdan has had a big hand in forming the Star Wars universe. Recently, he sat down with the Los Angeles Times to discuss the past, present, and future of the franchise.

First of all, Kasdan discusses why he wanted Star Wars: The Force Awakens to feel more like the original trilogy.

”The story [in the prequels] does not interfere. We only have to deal with the first trilogy so we didn't have to deal with it much. They obviously have a certain feel, and that was not the feel we wanted this one to have. This is much more related to "A New Hope" and "Empire." [Pauses] The thing I always loved about "Star Wars" — and George had this when he made "A New Hope" and J.J. can hook into this very strongly — is that it's goofy, you know? There are big issues and there's some philosophy, but it's basically goofy. And I think "The Force Awakens" is goofy — in the best way. Wherever there's a question: Could that happen? Well, why not?”

Kasdan also comments on how it was like working with J.J. Abrams and has a lot of praise to offer for the director.

”Now with J.J., you get a whole new generation with a kind of dynamic mastery of camera and effects put together by someone that has a strong personality himself. He's a really decent guy, and he makes movies the way I try to make movies, which is that it's a privilege to make a movie and no one should be miserable. You're spitting in the face of luck if you're not having a great time. And that's infused in the movie. So what you're going to get is very much the J.J. Abrams movie.”

Furthermore, Kasdan discussed the benefits of having different directors on every new installment in the Star Wars franchise moving forward.

”These movies will all be so different. ["Episode VIII" director] Rian Johnson is a friend of mine — he's going to make some weird thing. If you've seen Rian's work, you know it's not going be like anything that's ever been in "Star Wars." You couldn't have three more different people than J.J., Rian and ["Episode IX" director] Colin [Trevorrow]. Those movies will have the "Star Wars" saga as their basis, but everything else will be different. Then Phil Lord and Chris Miller are going to make the Han Solo film and I can't guess what that will be like — and I'm writing it!”

He then briefly commented on his approach to the upcoming Han Solo anthology film, which, from the looks of Kasdan's comment, seems to be very much an origin story.

”You know, he's younger in this [spinoff] movie and that's fun because you have to imagine him 10 years earlier in his early 20s. What was he like before he hardened up? Before he had some setbacks? Before he put on this cynical coat? What got him there?”

Of COURSE they want it to feel less like the prequels. Hell, I bet they wish the prequels weren't so much like the prequels.

Pretty obvious...seeing as SW:TFA feels almost exactly like New Hope verbatim...

I'm not a fan of all of this "no this one ain't like the dumb prequels, it's like the REAL STAR WARS" pandering from Disney and Lucasfilm. I get that the prequels sucked, but it's getting to the point where it doesn't feel like Ep VII is breaking any new ground, at all.

We've already got A New Hope, please don't remake it.

@BodieBroadus

Welcome to the world of marketing. The prequels left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths...you can bet your ass that Disney is going to do damage control and use nostalgia for the good set of films to sell this new trilogy. It's not pandering at all, it's just the smart thing to do.

Umm...waitaminute, But I didn't know Colin Treverrow was making the final friggin film! I have been nothing but stoked fer every detail of news about this but now...I mean, did anyone else see the piece of crap that was JurASSick World?? Doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Excited by his statements. Really like that they're trying to emulate the original trilogy. Hopefully, that means a return to form for the beloved franchise.

@Lem1

Yeah that $1.5 billion dollar film? No confidence at all.

Look, I wasn't a fan of that film either, but it certainly doesn't mean Trevorrow is a bad director. And the story of the new trilogy, along with the general direction of the franchise, is being overseen by Kathleen Kennedy. One director does not a bad film make. There are many elements, and in my opinion, they've picked a great set of directors for these films.

Nostalgia is like a seductress. Or an old girlfriend who rocked your world lol. The ex always makes the past seem more excellent than the present sometimes. People nowadays yearn for features of the past so strongly.

It seems to me that they have taken a lot from the original trilogy. I'm hoping they dont do a carbon copy of "A New Hope" with different characters.

^^ And far sh*ttier acting and plot. Visuals mean nothing if your story isn't up to snuff. That's why people hated the prequels. They put an emphasis on visual effects OVER story, as opposed to the original trilogy with focused on both.

@MexicanSuperMan doesn't really matter when everything (direction, acting, lack of practical effects, story structure, plot, dialogue, etc) sucks.

The original trilogy was amazing. The prequel trilogy sucked. And Jurassic World was a pretty damn good movie. Way better than either of the other two sequels. I don't understand the hate.

@Jollem - All six had bad acting and bad writing? Are you high? The prequels, yes. The OG's? Not a chance.

loki668 - 12/4/2015, 9:48 PM
The prequels were horribly written. There was, also, a lot of bad acting (not all but a lot). They had their moments but they never captured the magic of the first films. I was disappointed but, that disappointment was for THOSE films. I'm not going to dismiss these films because the prequels were disappointing. That would be like not watching any animation simply because Watership Down sucked ass.

@Jollem

I actually just watched all six prior to seeing TFA, and I still say you're high. The caliber of acting and writing in the originals was way better. George Lucas is a terrible writer, and can't direct for nothing.

And Jurassic Park: TLW was a terrible movie. JW was better.

@MexicanSuperman Alec Guinness was a theater actor who barely wanted to do the movies anyway. He was biased from the get go. Using that as evidence that the prequels were better movies is stupid. The prequels had terrible acting, special effects, writing, and a lot of really bad characters. Not to mention a swarm of plot holes and inconsistencies to the originals.

But you know, if special effect porn is your thing, then by all means, proceed.
