The identity of Supreme Leader Snoke has been driving us all crazy for the past two years and we still have no idea who - or what - he is. However, in a new interview, Andy Serkis has shed a little more light on what we should expect from the villain in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and it definitely sounds like he has big ties to the Sith. However, his motivations may be even more personal than imagined.
"The thing about Snoke is that he is extremely strong with the Force, the dark side of the Force. He’s terribly powerful, of course. But he is also a very vulnerable and wounded character," Serkis explains to the site. "He has suffered and he has suffered injury. The way that his malevolence comes out is in reaction to that. His hatred of the Resistance is fueled by what’s happened to him personally."
So, it's clearly personal between Snoke and the Resistance and it seems as if his horrible injuries may have come as a result of their actions. Could that be what led to him embracing the Dark Side?
Time will tell but director Rian Johnson says we shouldn't necessarily expect any big reveals and likens him to the Emperor in the original trilogy as an overarching figure who we knew nothing about. Serkis, meanwhile, teases tension between Snoke and Kylo Ren. "His training of Kylo Ren is not yielding what he wants. Therefore his anger towards Kylo Ren is intensified because he can’t bear weakness in others. Part of the manipulation is goading him with Hux and playing them off against each other."
