STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI: The Real Reason Kylo Ren Wears That Mask Has Been Revealed

We all assumed that Kylo Ren was wearing a mask in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a homage to his grandfather Anakin Skywalker but a new exhibition has revealed the real reason he conceals his face...

A display for Star Wars: The Last Jedi at this year's New York Comic-Con has revealed some surprising details about Kylo Ren and we now know why Adam Driver's villainous character hides his face. As well as paying homage to his grandfather Darth Vader, he reportedly uses it to conceal his identity. Does he not want members of The First Order knowing he was once called Ben Solo and was a Jedi in training?

The official description for his mask - which we see him destroy in the trailer - reads as follows:

Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, protege of Luke Skywalker, and eventual master of the knights of Ren. He is known as the "Jedi Killer" among the rank and file of the First Order. His helmet was crafted to mask his visage and voice, concealing his identity as he delves further into the power of the dark side of the Force.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens only briefly touched on Kylo's past so it will be interesting seeing if The Last Jedi delves even further into that and sheds even more light on why he wears the mask and later discards it. Could he be returning to the Light or no longer cares if those around him see his true face?

What do you guys think? As always, share your thoughts and theories in the comments section.

That reason is kind of weak!

@Forthas - Why? To me it makes perfect sense?

@FinnishFlash -

"His helmet was crafted to mask his visage and voice, concealing his identity as he delves further into the power of the dark side of the Force."

It makes it seem as though he is hiding from someone/something. If everyone knows who he is and he routinely takes off his helmet...which he did in the Force Awakens...what is he concealing?

@Forthas - "everyone" only Luke, Han, Leia and Snoke knew he was in TFA.

@FinnishFlash - And that guy from Ex Machina that plays a general.

@FinnishFlash - What makes you think General Hux did not know in addition to the fact it seems as though Lor San Tekka (Max Von Sydow) knew as well as probably Maz Kanata? For everyone else it is irrelevant.

That is like saying Darth Vader wore a mask to hide who he was when Ben Kenobi and Yoda knew!

@BobbyW - i forgot him, but did he know from the start or only when he went to save him? He left before Snoke talked about Han being his father is rememeber correctly?

@Forthas - i answered that below to bobbys question. I think Mazana knew it too, but i didn't think so far. But they only spoke about the first order and thats why only mentioned the ones who obviously knew.

@Forthas -

It's lame - and it is clear the fans put more time and thought into it than those involved who have already mentioned how they have no intention of giving some of the characters a backstory, or explaining much of what happened in the time jump, or explaining elements in TFA that made no sense.

For example;

Fans - He decided to create a mask and voice changer to try and replicate Darth Vader who he views as an idol and to hide the doubts he has about joining the dark side. A majority of those are aware of his identity and that is why they join the First Order. Since his disfigurement from Rey he has decided to wear the mask once more as a symbol of strength and to hide his own worries and concerns from his followers.

Here - He wears a mask and changes his voice to hide his identity

That's a great reason and makes perfect sense!

@Ha1frican - Exactly. That and he was trying to hide his identity since he is the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia.

@411IDSigo - i dont think ithey mean that hes literally trying to hid ehis identity as much as suppress that part of him internally and transform himself into who he feels he should be. If you look at the context of the sentence and the fact that we know from force awakens hes struggling with that "light" inside him

VictorKrueger - 10/10/2017, 1:26 PM
@Ha1frican - Interesting point.

I really hope they don't have him turn to the light side quickly.

@411IDSigo - i agree but im hoping (and to be clear i havent watched anything except the first teaser so idk what the new footage shows) that he ends up getting ditched by Snoke for Rey and that leads to Ben crawling back to the light after hes been abandoned
VictorKrueger
VictorKrueger - 10/10/2017, 1:31 PM
@Ha1frican - I wouldn't have a problem with that

@Ha1frican - Personally I would love both Rey and Ben to turn to the dark side.

Actually makes a lot of sense, why would he want people to know he's the son of 2 leaders of the Rebel Alliance

Why wouldn't he? It sends a powerful message to the Alliance.
