BOX OFFICE: TOTAL RECALL Remake Looks Set To Open With A Disappointing $20 Million

With The Dark Knight Rises set to once again take the #1 spot this weekend, Len Wiseman's Total Recall remake may only end up reaching the #3 position due to a lack of interest from moviegoers. Read on for details on how much it is currently expected to make.

Exhibitor Relations reports that Sony Pictures' Total Recall looks set to earn a disappointing total of less than $25 million when it opens in North America this weekend. Despite the fact that it comes over two decades since the original (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger) was released in multiplexes, it simply doesn't seem as if there is enough interest for the remake to regain its $200 million budget. While the site speculates that it will end up crashing and burning at the box office in a similar style to financial failures John Carter and Battleship, it's worth remembering that both of those ended up performing much better overseas and the same could happen with Total Recall. It looks likely that Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days may even end up beating Total Recall at the box office, while it has no chance of topping The Dark Knight Rises as that looks set to hold the #1 spot for the third consecutive week. Here are the current weekend estimates.

1. The Dark Knight Rises - $32M
2. Diary of a Wimpy Kid - $22M
3. Total Recall - $20M
4. Ice Age 4 - $9M
5. The Watch - $7M

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police - controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world - Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

STARRING:

Colin Farrell as Douglas Quaid
Jessica Biel as Melina
Kate Beckinsale as Lori
Bill Nighy as Kuato
Bryan Cranston as Vilos Cohaagen
John Cho as McClane

RELEASE DATE: August 3rd, 2012 (US) August 29th, 2012 (UK)

Seriously they need to stop letting Lee Wiseman do any movie. He like Paul W Anderson. They both do crappy movie and nail and marry the hot chicks in their movies.

Why did the studio spend so much and hire Farrell? Haven't they heard of Alexander?????? Kinda flopped big and kinda starred Mr Farrell.

Hollywood has too much money and too little sense. It was obvious Farrell doesn't have enough box office clout to make this film a hit. I'm not suggesting this is a bad film or Farrell is bad in it, but if you look at his Hollywood studio films - ones where he's the big lead actor - I think they've all flopped or not done that well. And you don't need to be a Hollywood big league producer or financier to figure that out!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't care what it makes at the Box Office, the fact it has better actors in it than the version with the bodybuilder trying to act is good enough for me. And at least this version doesn't look like it was shot in a studio!

I blame the advertising. I mean, I knew this movie was being made, but I had no idea that it was coming out this weekend until I just read this article. I thought it was still a ways away.

That being said, there was no way it was gonna beat TDKR anyway, but getting beat by Diary of a Wimpy Kid during the summer blockbuster season is just shameful.

I had a feeling this movie will do okay overseas but completely bomb in the States. I think when it is all sad and done it will make around 50 million domestically and 200 overseas.

Even after JOHN CARTER, BATTLESHIP & TOTAL RECALL spectacular FLOPS... Studios don't realise not to spend hundreds of millions of a story that NOT worth telling! Well then NOTHING will ever change!
John Carter estimated 425 Million$ production budget!
Battleships 210 million$ production Budget!
& now Total Recall's 200 Milion$!

Why on earth the Studio ececs don't bother just having a look at the script!
& intead giving their Millions of $ to make some shit fest & taking a Chance on sucess!
I mean if Micheal Bay can hire a Writer.. A proper writer & give him a few thousand $, Transformers can be an awesome film.
But NO!'

So Glad that AVENGERS & TDKR ... films made for right reasons & with great writers who fvcking give a shit about writing a Film & know how to... Are doing so well!

Isn't it enough proof that writing a good film is THE way for sucess & enjoyment as well!

Prometheus & TASM scripts were week & were only reasons if films dropped badly financially!
If written by better writer (Prometheus) & Studio (SONY) haven't fvcked with film's final cut (TASM) then BOTH would've earns A LOT MORE!
& I'm really PISSED at Sony's treatment of SPIDERMAN... Even though I'm not the biggest Spidey fan but TASM had the potential to be the best Spidey film easily & they cut all that out!
After writing & shooting it; they used all "Untold Story" shit just for promotion & now are gona put SAME stuff in TASM-2! That's PATHETIC!
