I was watching an episode of Game of Thrones and I had this weird thought about re-imagining the current Studios that produce comic book-related movies as the famous Noble Houses of Westeros. The associations I made are based on similarities of history and/or behaviour between a House and a Studio. SPOILER WARNING: If you never read/watched A Song of Ice and Fire and you don't want some spoilers, don't read this. If you don't care, well, go ahead.
Let's start!
MARVEL STUDIOS
To me Marvel Studios are pretty much owning Comic Book Movies right now. They built a fricking shared universe out of nothing, produced not one but two 1 billion+ films and have plenty of other goods to bring on the big screen. Their backs are covered by none other than Disney, and their leader, Kevin Feige, has demonstrated to be a brilliant, cold, highly competent strategist who managed to accomplish something no other film studio has ever done. He even stated he planned movies up until 2028! That's a lot! And competitors don't scare him, a lion doesn't know fear.
Yet, before Kevin Feige came on the battlefield, Marvel Studios didn't practically exist, much like Lannisters weren't exactly this powerful before Tywin took the place of his kind but weak-willed father. See my point?
SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT
Okay, here is the thing. The Freys have always been a low-level House, but they are incredibly important because they guard the Twins and are Lords of the Crossing, which, during wars, become fundamental advantage points. Sony doesn't possess many comic book characters... only one. But this one is a big one, because he's none other than fricking Spider-Man, one of the most well-known character in comic book history. They may not matter a lot in terms of building universes, but they have a champion by their side and they are going to make it count.
Also, they're pretty arrogant. Avi Arad, producer of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" said that if one day they will make a team-up with Marvel Studios, Spiderman should be the protagonist of the whole story, or, as he said, "the king".
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX
House Tyrell is one of the richest and wealthiest of Westeros, and that's Fox, when it comes to comic books properties. They own all the X-men, which are a fricking lot, they own characters like Wolverine, Deadpool, Cable, AND the Fantastic Four, including all the enemies and supporting figures, therefore Silver Surfer, Galactus, Krees, and on. They could build a universe around this, but instead they kept X-Men and F4 separated, at least up to now. They also collected many failures (the two Fantastic Four movies, the third X-Men, two Wolverine movies...). They have many resources, but sometimes appear to be lazy or not smart enough to use them to their full potential. House Tyrell is rich, yes, but has never been a scary, powerful force like the Lannisters. Until now, of course. Are they growing strong?
DC ENTERTAINMENT
Here we are, the last name on the list. DC Studios have a brilliant and legendary past: Richard Donner's Superman I and II, Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns, and Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy. They are among the oldest, if not the oldest, comic book company around, and when it comes to CBMs, very few can say to have the same tradition of Dc Comics.
However, Dc made many mistakes. Aside from Joel Schumacher's works, the studio never actually managed to bring characters on the big screen whose name wasn't Batman or Superman. Jonah Hex, Steel, Green Lantern, Catwoman, all failed attempts. Watchmen was a good product, but it's not entirely considerable part of the Dc Comics canon. They never tried to build a shared universe, a Justice League movie got cancelled, and, in recent times, films have always been a touchy subject, almost a weak spot, for Dc Entertainment.
Things are about to change, though. Daenerys started as a helpless easy-to-rape teenager but his confidence and power grew. She's a queen now, and she's on a journey to get back what it's rightfully hers. She's on a quest to avenge her family, defeat the usurpers and seize the Seven Kingdoms. Well, Dc is trying to do the same thing. There was an age when people working at Dc pretty much lead and commanded all comics-related properties, but the throne was taken away from them. Now the king, after a long time, has awakened, Batman/Superman and Justice League movies are going to be delivered, and something tells me that a lot of stuff is moving at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Oh, by the way, Dc Studios have three dragons as well. Here they are.
