JURASSIC WORLD Director Colin Trevorrow Says He's Talked To Universal About Where The Franchise Goes Next

Filmmaker Colin Trevorrow brought an end to the Jurassic era with Dominion, but the Jurassic World director has now confirmed that he's talked to Universal Pictures about where the franchise goes next...

Jurassic World Dominion was advertised as the end of the franchise, though no one really seemed to believe that. The series makes too much money for Universal Pictures to leave on the shelf for too long, and filmmaker Colin Trevorrow has confirmed in an interview with Empire (via SFFGazette.com) that there have already been talks about what comes next.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom shocked everyone by destroying Isla Nublar and unleashing dinosaurs on the wider world, and Dominion was very much about how humanity deals with the fallout from that. So, where do we go from here?

"The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs," Trevorrow explains. "For the franchise to be able to move forward – because it’s inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park – but if we’re gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?"

That's what he's done, of course, and a logical next step would surely be to jump into the future to show us what becomes of this new world. Trevorrow wouldn't commit to specifics, but seemed to suggest the focus could be shifted to some of Dominion's new characters, reiterating that he's talked to Universal about the future and, "There’s more to come."

If that's the case, why was the last movie promoted specifically as the "epic conclusion of the Jurassic era"?

"I never knew that this was the ending of the franchise until I saw the marketing," Trevorrow admits. "Those guys are brilliant at what they do, but for me I think it might have been clearer if they’d said, ‘The end of an era’, as opposed to all of it. Because regardless of the cynical approach – of course they’re gonna want to make more money, which is what Jurassic World was about – a new dinosaur fan is born every day. Kids deserve these movies, and young filmmakers grow up on these stories."

So, we'll be seeing more dinosaurs on screen before too long, though time will tell what that looks like. It appears the franchise has definitely moved on from the idea of these rampaging dinos being confined to a theme park, anyway, but if we aren't going post-apocalyptic, it could be fun telling new types of stories across the globe (there's been some talk of a horror movie).

What do you hope is next for the Jurassic franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

@noahthegrand - he made a convincing argument as to why he movies were different though.

And to be honest, he's right. Dominion was a movie that happened to have dinos in them. Not a movie about dinos.

Please keep this director away from Jurassic Park, He just doesn't get the series at all.

The only thing I want is a Jurassic Park HBO like series, have Universal finally spend good money on a Peacock show or just wait a few years until Comcast buys Warner Bros. Discovery so than a HBO Jurassic Park prequel show is made.

Seeing the early days of Jurassic Park and being more like the book could be really cool.

Hollywood just spitting out movies, movies are suppose to be timeless so why flood the market with half assed crap, just greed taking over the indrustry. Martin Scorcese was right and its a shame he got so much flak for talking crap about the MCU cause now most ppl agree with him but wont admit it

I’m desensitized after Dominion. If they couldn’t nail that film then I have zero hope Universal can do anything worthwhile.

Remember when people hated The Lost World? You don’t know what you have til it’s gone.

Either a R rated tv show or reboot for the first two books, or leave it be. FK and Dominion turned this franchise into an Asylum movie franchise

No other options than to cross it over with Fast And The Furious

How about Jurassic City. Where 25 years after Dominion many of the Dinosaurs have bred in the wild making them become the dominant species and some animals like Elk and Lions have begun to go extinct because they have nothing to eat. So the United Nations have no choice but to use a biological agent to kill off all dinosaurs. But the untested product has dire side effects on humans causing many people to die as well. So thousands of survivors migrate to cities where dinosaurs cannot thrive except the flying carnivores. But the Biological virus is slowly spreading to one of the last cities humans have claimed.

Wait wait wait, hold on guys. I've got it. The answer as to where they can take this franchise is right in front of us:

So now that dinos are a part of everyday life, some scientists begin experimenting on Raptors for their advanced cognitive skills in an effort to cure Alzheimer's and other degenerative neurological disorders. In the process they create a drug which does in fact seemingly cure these cognitive impairments. Owen, who is no longer a Dino wrangler and a part of this team of scientists is experimenting with this drug on Beta, who gives birth to the super-smart Raptor, Delta, who Owen continues to experiment on despite the project being shut down. Owen raises Delta as his own, never thinking that one day after a highly contagious and deadly version of COVID (Omega v.0.12.307) has wiped out most of humanity, Delta will lead a group of similarly advanced dinos in a battle against what remains of humanity. This leads to... "Rise of the Planet of the Dinos"!

He's right, they should have stop after the first one.
I'm all for dinosaurs in movies, but make another franchise. This one has run its course.

Well some of you already touched on “Dinosaurs in Space” so the only idea I have is human/dinosaur hybrids at this point… [frick] it, cyborgs too.
