Toho has released the first trailer for Godzilla Minus One, and for those of you underwhelmed by the MonsterVerse's approach to the legendary kaiju, this looks like a return to form for the iconic beast.

2024 will see the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, but Toho has its own movie on the way featuring the King of the Monsters: Godzilla Minus One.

The first trailer for the movie was released earlier today (via SFFGazette.com) and it arguably looks better than each and every one of the MonsterVerse movies produced by Legendary Pictures. The newly released footage offers a much better idea of what fans can expect and what little we see of the kaiju is absolutely awesome (or should that be roar-some?).

Toho's first Godzilla movie since 2016's Shin Godzilla, one of that movie's VFX artists, Takashi Yamazaki, will take the helm of what sounds like an epic new entry into the long-running franchise.

"Postwar Japan has lost everything. The film depicts an existence that gives unprecedented despair," Yamazaki recently revealed. "The title Godzilla Minus One was created with this in mind. In order to depict this, the staff and I have worked together to create a setting where Godzilla looks as if 'fear' itself is walking toward us, and where despair is piled on top of despair."

"I think this is the culmination of all the films I have made to date, and one that deserves to be 'experienced' rather than 'watched' in the theater. I hope you will experience the most terrifying Godzilla in the best possible environment."

While many fans would love to see a Legendary/Toho crossover, this take on Godzilla is completely separate from what that studio is working on. Legendary's upcoming projects include the aforementioned Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and an Apple TV+ series we recently discovered is titled Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

"Set in a post-war Japan," reads an official description, "Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force. The concept is that Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country into the 'minus.'"

Godzilla Minus One is the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise, Toho's 33rd Godzilla film, and the fifth film in the franchise's "Reiwa" era. It's set to be released in Japan on November 3 and will be unleashed in U.S. theaters on December 1.

Love it!

The detail of this Godzilla reminds me of Art Adams’ Godzilla. Also, nice touch on the physics of the boat being thrown across the yard. This looks like a good one
MasterMix - 9/4/2023, 3:08 PM
I just finished watching every Godzilla movie this year. I wonder how different it's gonna be.
UniqNo - 9/4/2023, 3:32 PM
Defo looking better than Kong Vs Godzilla. I kind of liked King of the Monsters though.
Slotherin - 9/4/2023, 5:16 PM
@UniqNo - to each their own.
I liked both for what they are.
Slotherin - 9/4/2023, 3:34 PM
That does seem neat but shitting on the MonsterVerse was both unnecessary and merely subjective.
Himura - 9/4/2023, 5:05 PM
@Slotherin - New around here? Josh can't write an unbiased article to save his life.
Slotherin - 9/4/2023, 5:15 PM
@Himura - haha, I legit just found myself teasing someone on another post with the same question.
MotherGooseUPus - 9/4/2023, 3:49 PM
This looks absolutely fantastic! Truly going back to their roots with Godzilla being a terrifying creature with unlimited desire to destroy mankind. I will 💯 be seeing this in theaters

Amazing! That is how you do a good trailer! Good music, good build up, and only glimpse of the title character!
IronGenesis - 9/4/2023, 4:34 PM
He really looks pissed off in this.
Godzilla2000Zer - 9/4/2023, 4:36 PM
The body count in this is gonna be huge
MosquitoFarmer - 9/4/2023, 4:37 PM
If the movie ended with Godzilla wiping out humanity, that would be exceptional!
bobbo68 - 9/4/2023, 4:54 PM
Bow down to the King because he is coming back this December 👑
Himura - 9/4/2023, 5:06 PM
This looks fantastic. Love the old school feel mixed with modern Japanese cinema.

Looks very good!

I love these japanese Gojira movies but also enjoy the new monsterverse.
campblood - 9/4/2023, 6:24 PM
Looks good, but goddamn it sounds like it’s gonna be a bummer. I don’t want to cry from a Godzilla movie
JobinJ - 9/4/2023, 6:34 PM
I love Godzilla. Been to Toho studios in Japan. G-fest, you name it. Usually the Toho movies are goofy and terrible CGI. Shin (thought I didn't like his design) was good. This looks AMAZING!

Lets hope they keep it a little grounded and not introduce a mega power zord robot or psychic tiny women.
grif - 9/4/2023, 6:37 PM
awesome. throwing oil tankers look badass. also i think they drop a bomb on him
Order66 - 9/4/2023, 6:51 PM
I’m a big Godzilla fan and have seen every one including animation. It’s the same story tho just rinse and repeat.
EZBeast - 9/4/2023, 7:26 PM
@Order66 - ehhh not really…

Most characters are rebooted or just put into slightly different situations. Godzilla has been a villian, a savior, a side character, the end of the world, the savior of the world, fought gods, fought aliens, fought mankind, has been worshipped, has been mythical, been a force of nature, a creation of the atomic bomb, a prehistoric beast predating all of life, hell he has even been entity created from a he souls of those who died in ww2 Japan.

Yeah buildings are destroyed and monsters are fought usually but unlike most movies that follow the same character Godzilla himself actually has changed throughout his life time in the role he has played in films, books, shows, comics, etc.
bobevanz - 9/4/2023, 7:14 PM
These feels more like the scary Godzilla, like the original and 84. Post war Godzilla that never forgives Japan? It sets a precedent for sequels why he's always coming back for more. Also it looks like they nuked him and he's still coming. Little do they know, radiation is his kink! Like Duke Nuke'Em
bobevanz - 9/4/2023, 7:20 PM
Shin Godzilla was great but it was 85% board room talking, it's budget restraints but there are some of my favorite moments in the entire series from Shin, the score is my favorite part.
marvel72 - 9/4/2023, 9:50 PM
I can't wait for this, looks fantastic.
IronMan616 - 9/4/2023, 10:52 PM
Looks fantastic, plus no Hollywood DEI, ESG bullshit either. Win win.
CloakDagger - 9/4/2023, 11:31 PM
the trailer got me all pumped up for this..!!!

YET, whenever that happened, the movie tends to turn out s**t (like Man of Steel).
MrDandy - 9/5/2023, 2:51 AM
I'm still disappointed that the Shin Godzilla film was never made. But this looks really good. Love some Godzilla!
grif - 9/5/2023, 2:14 PM
@MrDandy - hopefully we will get that sequel.
