Guillermo del Toro Says We'll See More Of The Kaiju's World In PACIFIC RIM 2

In a recent interview to promote The Strain, Guillermo del Toro was asked whether he thinks Pacific Rim 2 would still be in development had Legendary not decided to team-up with Universal.

Pacific Rim was not a box office success, grossing only $411 million worldwide on a budget which was rumoured to be well over $250 million (and that may not even include marketing costs). Those are still reasonably good numbers, but perhaps not the ones you'd hope for when it comes to guaranteeing a sequel. Well, it's happening, but at Universal - a studio desperate for new franchises - instead of Warner Bros. So, it that the only reason it's being made? "No, when we finished the first one, we said, 'Well, we could go here or there.'" director Guillermo del Toro revealed in a recent interview with Shock Till You Drop. "At some point, Thomas [Tull] and I met and we said, “You know what, it took such an effort to create the world, we would like to continue.” When Legendary moved, they moved with that property. Thomas took it with him, so it’s a fortunate coincidence of events but we started talking about it before they made the move." As for whether or not he believes Warner Bros. would have passed on a sequel, he replied: "I have no idea. That’s complete speculation." Talk then turned to whether we'll be visiting the Kaiju's world in the sequel, and while he refused to answer that, the filmmaker did drop a few intriguing hints about the direction of Pacific Rim 2. "You’re asking the right questions but not necessarily the way you think. If you think are we invading their world, we’re not, but we’re showing more of that world." Are you guys looking forward to the movie?

"Pacific Rim 2 was not a box office success", I'm sure it was not a box office success as it has not come out yet.

I don't understand the hate for this movie.

It's characters were painted in broad strokes but considering they were fighting for your attention against awesome giant robots ... Well they kinda had to be simple and strong personalities without much nuance. If they had gone all emo or something, it would not balance well against the epic battles. And still the actors did very well in the roles.

The movie was fun. Alot of fun . And way Way better than Godzilla.

Oh and IMHO, Pacific Rim has as much replay value as Avengers.

I don't think it was better than Godzilla in terms of storytelling and visuals. People just hate Godzilla because they want to jerk off while monsters fight the whole movie. Nothing against those people who genuinely dislike Godzilla.

@Gambit, if Josh is going to tell us the future he should of put ***Spoiler Alert*** with the title.

@cookiekid...

Godzilla was an origin movie so it had to have an element of mystery to it while it rolled out the monsters. It did this very well. But it would have been ten times. Better if it had a strong payoff I.e. full on monster fights.

I give PR props because it skipped the origin and dropped viewers in the thick of the world. All I'm saying is it's easier to make a good origin monster movie because they basically all work the same.

He'll, look at the classic movie Them. It's structure is basically the standard of every giant monster movie. Or beast from 20000 fathoms. Or the original Godzilla.

One of Del Toro's worst movies gets a sequel and Hellboy 2 doesn't?

I liked Del Toro's other films and Pan Labyrinth praise was well deserved. But saying PR is his worst isn't fair. He wanted to make a big old school monster movie. And he did. And it was a great old school monster movie.

He's versatile. All his movies are different. I don't think he really has a worst movie. He does well in any genre he works in. People just get jarred by his genre jumping I think

Sorry need to clarify...I meant it's hard to judge Del Toro movies against themselves because I feel he just makes different movies all the time. It's hard to compare them against each other.

@SecretWarrior: It was two hours of meaningless cartoon robot fights mixed with pointless "telenovela drama", add to that the plot contrivances, the emotional dissonance with the characters, the awkward dialogue, the ham-fisted sentimentality, Charlie Hunnan's flat performance, all the worn-out and recycled tropes and pastiches and you get something that equates to one of Guilermo Del Toro's worst endeavors.

Tetrahedon... Obviously, you're a fan of DT movies and you appreciate his characters. He does really well nuanced characters. he gets good performances from his actors as well.

In PR, I think that his characters are simple and strong archetypes. They have to come through strong in order to keep your attention over all the epic battles. They may not be the greatest characters in movies, but they suit the story and genre.

And imho to call the battles meaningless is to really missing the point of watching a giant monster movie :)

@baroness... Sorry, I hate Transfomers so much I didn't even go see it haha.

Tell me though, DT made a giant monster movie. Did u think it would be something other than that? Did u see it mainly because you like his movies? Or are u a giant robot monster movie fan?

And I just wanted to say that Mako was one of the strongest female characters I have seen in any kind of superhero role recently. She owned her Jaeger and didn't even have to be the hero's Gf at the end.

I think a name actor would help. If only they get the right guy. The reason PR worked is because you didn't know the actors. You let yourself be immersed in the world. Some actors can pull u out of a movie.

I mean Redford and Paul Newman were up for the original superman at one point. But even the actors knew people would just say," there's Robert Redford in a superman suit"
