Earlier this year, you announced that the reboot of RoboCop will direct. The original from 1987, directed by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven , with that movie made its debut in Hollywood. How will your vision differ from those of Verhoeven?

I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop , and I think that such a film is now urgently needed. But I will not repeat what Verhoeven has done so clearly and strongly. Instead I try to make a film that will address topics that Verhoeven untreated. If you are a man changes into a robot, how do you do that? What is the difference between humans and robots developed? What is free will? What does it mean to lose your free will? Those are the issues that I think.

RoboCop is your first movie in America. Like the political apparatus of Rio de Janeiro, the Hollywood film industry, a system in which not everyone thrives. What is your strategy to survive in Hollywood?

I try to make movies that I like, that I feel and I deal with social problems involved. I will continue to do where I work. If I can develop in Hollywood, then I make a movie with all the means Hollywood. If that fails, then that movie is not. It is that simple!

Jose also had some more good news recently, his box office hit Elite Squad 2 will be representing Brazil at the Oscars. His movie which takes on issues of corruption and multiple levels of government has been given the honor of competing in the best foreign film category. Looks like the producers might have an oscar winning director working on their reboot when all is said and done.

Another tidbit in the news is that the main actor from Elite Squad 2, Wagner Moura is very interested in a role in Robocop, but doesn't think he'll get one. He just recently has been filming Neil Blomkamp's follow-up to District 9 with Matt Damon. He'll be playing the main villain, which is pretty exciting for his debut in American cinema.

The article below is translated by CBM's own Lucaxmen.

Asked if he would accept to join the Robocop project with his colleague (Jose Padilha), Moura says he wouldn't hesitate. "I love working with Padilha, I will join him if he invites me. I don't think that there is going to be a character for me at this movie at all, but if he wants to work with me again..." - courtesy of progresso.com.br

Sounds about as good as the conan reboot. Stfu with spewing political opinion in movies. All you'll do is alienate half the audience.

@Closetnerd- The original Robocop was very much a political satire on how corporate America is running things. It was pretty much the real antagonist of the Robocop trilogy.

robocop is a near perfect movie, so why bother remaking it?

By default a reboot is repeating whats already been done but usually the reboot is worse

The original holds up just fine and the corporations running the government is more relevant now than then. Just watch the original again and make something else. The fright Night remake was weak I expect this one will be as well

Cripes, just make another SEQUEL, let it be another cyborg cop, dang it! Stop with the crappy remakes, just bring sequels.

They should do it only to have an excuse to make a new Robocop Blu ray with a better transfer/master.

DannyRand401 & ROMACK@ Couldnt agree more

I´ve only seen the first Elite Squad but judging by that film i think Padilha is a very good filmmaker who could make a great Robocop film.

Even it is a unneccesary remake!

I need to watch Elite squad 1 & 2 again. Good movies.

I don't like reboots as well, but I'm actually curious on how this NEW Robocop can turn out to be.

BTW, this is the translation of that elite squad 2 trailer:

V.O.
- To certain people war is the cure.
War works as an exhaust valve.
To me it was always like that, partner.

- BOPE is a fundamental part of our public security policy.

V.O.
After I came to the security secretariat, BOPE had 16 tactic teams.

- SKULL!

V.O.
Now, we operate with armoreds, choppers.
I turned BOPE into a war machine.
I broke the drug traffic in Rio de Janeiro.
And the war machine I've helped to create changed the history of this city.

- The weapons aren't there, the operation is wrong!
- Shit went down in BANGU I.

- André, let the patrol in position but don't do anything until I say so, understand?

- Hey man, you've fed the pig now we're gonna bake it. Bring the pillow!

- If I don't come in, colonel, there's gonna be a carnage inside.
- Carnage already started, partner. I don't want to take your body outta there.
- Colonel, I want you to understand is that my entrance was authorized by your boss. I'm going in.

V.O.
- But I took too long to realize who were my true enemies.
And in a war this may be fatal.

- you can't touch a Skull, man. Those are my orders.

V.O.
The truth is that my war against the system was just beginning...
And this time it would be personal.

- Let me take this responsibility alone.
- Responsibility is mine. Command is mine.

Grif: My sentiments exactly! The original is among my favorite movies of all-time.

I have no quarrel with a sequel- it can't be any worse than the previous ones- but a remake or re-whatever is completely unneeded.

They should just remake or overwrite the third. Piece of shit. And no killing off Anne Lewis. Or Murphy.
