Benedict Cumberbatch Talks STAR TREK 2 And Shares His Thoughts On ELEMENTARY

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch comments on his still mysterious villainous role in J.J. Abrams Star Trek 2, as well as sharing his thoughts on the controversial Elementary; an upcoming US TV series which shares quite a few similarities with the BBC's Sherlock.

It's currently thought that Benedict Cumberbatch will play 'Gary Mitchell' in Star Trek 2, although that is far from confirmed at this point, and just one on many rumours currently circulating about the sequel which is still shrouded in secrecy. In an interview with ShortList, the British actor has talked a little more about his role in the J.J. Abrams helmed film which we already know (thanks to some leaked set photos) will see him take on Spock in a fairly epic looking battle. There's still no sign of a trailer, but Star Trek 2 is released on May 17th, 2013.

"I’ll tell you this, it’s iconic and it’s exciting. I’m bored of denying that it’s Khan now, because people keep saying it. It’s a great part and it’s really well written. I enjoyed the fights and the stunts, there’s lots of that and it really is proper action movie territory. I went off and did The Hobbit [doing motion-capture and voice work as dragon Smaug and the Necromancer] at the beginning of the job, so I literally came on set, established the look, did a day of filming and then f*cked off to New Zealand for two weeks before coming back. But it’s the stuff of dreams. I know it’s such a well-trodden, clichéd path, ‘Brit actor plays baddie in Hollywood’, but I channelled all of that and just really enjoyed it."

Despite roles in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse, many of you will more than likely know Cumberbatch mostly for his work on the BBC series Sherlock. The series also stars Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and takes place in the present day, and so there was something of an uproar from fans when it was announced that an American remake of sorts was going ahead. Despite some significant differences, it sounds as if the actor isn't too happy with the thought of competition from Elementary's Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Lui.

"Jonny [Lee Miller] asked me if I was all right with him doing it. I said, "What are the similarities?" And he went, "Well it’s modern..." I went, "Oh." Then he said, "Lucy Liu’s going to play Joan Watson..." And I went, "Oh." I got hold of the pilot script just to check it out. I don’t know, we’ll see. I think there’s room for us both to coexist. I don’t feel threatened by it and I wish him the best, which is as diplomatic as I can be. I did say, "Well, I’d prefer you didn’t do it but you’ve got a kid to feed, a nice house in LA and a wife to keep in good clothes." When you get used to a certain standard of living and they waft a pay cheque at you, what are you going to do? I think Jonny was like, "Mate, I’ve got the f*cking mountain to climb here [to reach the acclaim of Sherlock], you’ve got nothing to fear." I wish him the best of luck, but I’m a bit cynical about why they’ve chosen to do it and why they cast him."

@SpeedForce -

Ha yes, the Doctor! I do know his name(ha ha) but, I just felt it would be better for those who are not aware. I am eagerly awaiting season 7 here in the US. Hands down Matt Smith is the best doctor to date, and this was the best last scene ever...

He's right. There's no need for this show and te casting is completely uninspired and dull. I'm not remotely interested in the show and I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes (books, movies, BBC show)

For once I actually agree with grif (at least on the 4th part). Elementary is a cheep knockoff, possibly riding on the coattails of Sherlock's popularity. Lucy Liu as Watson???!!!! Seriously!!!!
Sir Arther Conan Doyle's probably rolling his eye or laughing at a casting choice like that.

i don't like his face, his attitude, his personality. and in my opinion he is very overrated as an actor.

Maybe there'll be a existential crossover between Sherlock and Doctor who, investigating the deaths of every character in Elementary.

Will they just tell us who the damn villain is in Star Trek?!?!? I mean seriously how is that going to ruin the movie if we know who the antagonist is? Nolan let us know that Bane was the bad guy a year and a half before TDKR came out.

Grumpy grif!

Star Trek 2 is going to be delicious!
The Hobbitt, all 3 are going to be fab u lous!

I love exclamation points!:-)

Don't know about this new Elementary, not sure if Jonny Lee Miller is right for the part. On the bright side, I think Lucy Lui is hot; I love watching her.

Wow, Cumberbatch is an asshole. How can he say that about his friend? He has been coming off as a dick in his recent interviews.
