POLL: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Villain. Who Is Benedict Cumberbatch Playing?

The debate is going strong after a domestic and international teaser trailer for JJ Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness was released. Some say Cumberbatch is playing Gary Mitchell while other says he's surely Khan. Who do you think it is?

Some people say the fact that Cumberbatch is in a Star Fleet uniform is proof that he's Gary Mitchell. Others point to the fact that Khan was one of several genetically engineered 'supermen' which would account for the feats of prowess on display in the the trailer. Maybe we'll get a definitive answer in the 9-minute preview before The Hobbit. One thing's for sure, in an age where most of The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers were spoiled before their release, it's absolutely amazing that details for the Star Trek sequel have been kept under wraps for this long.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Gary Mitchell. The likeness Alice Eve's character shares with the Elizabeth Dehner character is striking.

And [frick]ing hot sorry

Definitely not Kahn. But I don't think Khan either.

Hmmmm, you know, it's entirely possible Gary Mitchell and Khan have been meshed together to form his character.

ME, well, I naturally associate his character with Saren Arterius.

Perhaps he'll be a puppet who everyone thinks is Chicken Little, who was in a terrible accident that miraculously gave him some type of telekinesis, at the cost of his sanity. Maybe he's also being controlled by the "accident", and the hidden power behind it.

Or maybe we'll find out in May ;)

And yes, I watched the entire teaser with Mass Effect vision.

I know they said he was a canon character but I can't help thinking they've merged Mitchel and Khan and created someone new here..they may CALL him one of those names, but his character will not be 100% one or the other. Plus that last shot in the Japanese teaser is just too "Wrath Of Khan" for it to be anything else but..

POTENTIAL SPOILER

Kirk saying goodbye to Spock

I think we have to take into account the fact that this is an alternate reality to the one of the TV show and past movies, meaning that, even if the villain is Khan or Mitchell, he could very well be a vastly different version of the character. In fact, he could be a villainous version of a character who was never a villain in the series before.

Whoever he is, I hope it is not Khan.

Garth of Izar is one theory that I have read.
Garth = Darth
And JJ Abrams is a Star Wars fan.

@RorMachine
Although sure, Kirk could have changed his shirt somewhere in the movie (he was wearing black throughout the first one), Cumberbatch is seen wearing black. The hand pressed up against the glass to Spock's has a black sleeve, while in the trailer, Kirk has a yellow shirt.

I think it's a red herring. If Cumberbatch has superpowers, he may even have telepathy. Perhaps he is testing it out.

Scotty is seen comforting a crying Uhura. That may be because he parents, or mother (see woman in teaser) was killed in the attack in San Francisco.

I like to explore different options.

I certainly Want it to be Gary Mitchell, woud make sense since he was thought to be dead. but honestly I think it's either John Paxton's/Peter Weller's Son or James T. Kirk's Brother.

more than likely it's John Paxton's Son, look at what happened to him in Enterprise, look at what Cumberbatch is doing? Cumberbatch is John Paxton's son!
Shadowelfz

Yeah I think he's going to be a combination of both. Maybe a less god-like and more khanish Gary Mitchell?

@Rormachine:

Zachary Quinto did say before that he wanted to go in different directions with his films, and that he may not return as Spock. Could that be a hint hint wink wink that

(POTENTIAL SPOILER)

Spock may die in this film?

It won't be Khan, Abrams doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would put the villain from the second Trek movie into his second Trek movie. I have no idea who Gary Mitchell is so I can't comment on that. Does Cumberbatch not look like a character from the Trekverse? considering he's playing an alternate universe version you have to assume he's been styled to look like the character.

It doesn't really make sense to compare this film to TWOK since the crews are at two completely different places in their own timelines. I'd say for now it does bare a resemblance to Gary and maybe even Elizabeth Dehner, which would be awesome. Reaching way back to pull a story like that and add a new twist is, in my opinion, 100% the way to go. Khan can show up later, and if he does it certainly wouldn't resemble TWOK film.

"It's not Khan. That's a myth. Everyone's saying it is, but it's not. I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me - it's beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them,"

---Simon Pegg

"Yep, it's yet another thing I can't talk about [laughs]. I'll tell you this, it's iconic and it's exciting. I'm bored of denying that it's Khan now, because people keep saying it."

---Cumberbatch

If we can believe this, it's Gary Mitchell.

Gary [frick]ing Mitchell people. It isn't Khan, get over it :)

[frick] Khan.

Furthermore, if Alice Eve isn't playing Elizabeth Dehner then [frick] it, I'm Michael Jackson.

This is the clearest proof that Cumberbatch is Gary Mitchell. And Alice Eve is thereby- Elizabeth Dehner.
