STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Star Sonequa Martin-Green Talks Canon And Teases Burnham And Spock In The Second Season

Star of CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery Sonequa Martin-Green has been speaking about the shows fine walk with canon as well as whether we'll see her character interact with Star Trek icon Mr. Spock...

When it was first revealed that Star Trek: Discovery's Michael Burnham was the adoptive sister of iconic Star Trek character Spock, many naturally questioned why like with his half-brother Sybok, had the Enterprises' science officer never mentioned this member of his family before.

This along with other slight shifts or perceived breaks in canon on CBS All Access' recent show have all been promised to be addressed in time on the show, and after the long-play on a number of questionable elements at the beginning of the shows first season being fully paid off  by the series finale the creators have earnt the benefit of the doubt.

Speaking to Deadline, Sonequa Martin-Green who plays the aforementioned Burnham spoke about this promise of explanation and the inherent questions that will always arise when setting a show between two pre-existing entries in a franchise.

“Alex Kurtzman, who helped create the show with Bryan Fuller, who obviously worked very closely with JJ for his franchise of Star Trek films, said, ‘I know a lot of people are asking why he didn’t ever mention her,’ He was like, ‘Trust us. There will be an explanation.’” The Walking Dead actress recalled. “That’s what happens when you come into this time period where you’re couched between two iterations,” Martin-Green continued.

“There’s a lot of those things where you can only go so far, or you have to find loops or whatever, as it surfaces in the story. We are so canon-specific and canon-compliant, and the moments where we are not, there is a reason for it.

So can we expect this to be addressed in the coming season, where we will see the crew of the Discovery interact not only with the USS Enterprise and her captain, Christopher Pike but also a possible Mr. Spock?

“You know, Aaron Harberts, he said after the finale, on After Trek, that Season Two was going to be about that line between science and faith,” Martin-Green said. He also said that there’s going to be a lot of family dynamic. It is the Enterprise in that shot. We all know who is on the Enterprise. You see Sarek and Burnham look at each other, and there you have it.”

We already know a young version of everyone's favorite half-Vulcan will appear in flashbacks on the upcoming season, but many are awaiting an interaction with Burnham and Spock as adults. Interestingly enough a CBS All Access production teaser showed footage of Martin-Green's Burnham entering a room on the USS Enterprise marked  "3F", which was the designation of Spock's personal quarters in Star Trek: The Original Series.

What do you think? Do you like the adoptive sister angle for Burnham? Would you like to see her interact with an adult Spock in season 2 of Star Trek Discovery? Leave your thoughts below.

And if anyone is interested in the "In Production" teaser for Season 2 referenced in the article that has some nice Pike and TOS uniform teases, here you go.

IDK why this show feels the need to remake TOS uniforms with a modern aesthetic. Deep Space Nine and Enterprise just used the old costumes as they were. And they worked fine.

You stupid lying mount of worthless flesh, go back to the walking dead, as mediocre tv is all you can do. Kurtzman has proven time and again he has no talent (mummy, amazing Spider-Man 2, etc). This show breaks every piece of continuity in trek, from characters, to tech, to timeline, to races, to the [frick]ing original pilot. The only reason std was put on all access was because it was the only theyd trick anyone into watching it

*Sigh* I miss simpler times. Watched Undiscovered Country last week and got misty. This show still has potential, but re casting Spock the second time in ten years ?... I suppose there's a TV Superman and a movie Superman now, and about five Batmans, in theory.

I'd rather see more references to Captain Archer and the NX-01 Enterprise but hey-ho.
Good casting for Pike.

If I watch this show pretending that it is a future timeline in the Star Trek Universe it is actually bearable.

'I know a lot of people are asking why he didn’t ever mention her,’
He was like: ‘Trust us. There will be an explanation.’”

CONTRIVED, CONVOLUTED, FORCED WRITING.

Creating problems because you want to have her linked to Spock and Sarek.

Wait... so people are actually upset at Discovery (i.e. the GOOD modern Star Trek) because it doesn't fully mesh with the terrible rebooted movies and (in themselves) actually take a wrecking ball to the earlier Roddenberry Trek canon and (more importantly) characterizations, tone, and themes of the franchise?

Guys... priorities. The clear answer is to keep classic Trek and Discovery as an alternate timeline, and flush all copies of the cinematic abominations down every available toilet on the planet. Let's be sensible here.
