As if there weren't already enough reasons to pick up your own copy of Star Trek when it debuts on DVD and Blu-Ray November 7th, Paramount Home Entertainment is adding a bonus that you'll have to see to believe. Technology built into the packaging will allow the consumer to experience "augmented reality," technology never before used on a major home entertainment release.

The disc packaging, when held in front of a standard webcam, will allow the user to control an interactive hologram on their computer screen. Through the holographic interface, the user can tour several cabins aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and engage in combat from the ship's deck. This is an updated version of the technology used to technology used to promote the international theatrical release of the movie.

All told, there will be three different versions of Star Trek released: a one-disc version with director commentary; a two-disc DVD set, chock full of features and including a digital copy of the movie; and, a three-disc Blu-ray version with a BD-Live feature that provides live access to NASA updates, in addition to the bonus features and digital copy.

Buy Star Trek on DVD and Blu-Ray November 17th!

Im fed up of dvd people moaning about blu ray, saying the diffrence is nothing its all a scam, what a load of rubbish. The quailty on blu ray is so much better and is worth the extra money. Stop being cheap and buy a blu ray player people! And it will be so so so worth it for star trek just AMAZING!!!!

I don't care about all the extra content I can watch it online for free eventually, why pay a crap load more for extra features? the hologram thing is cool but I'll pass and just buy the single disk DVD.

Blu-ray's are definitely superior to DVD's. Although the transfer on some blu-rays can be a little grainy, for the most part the differnce in quality is HUGE! The cheapest blu ray player to buy is the PS3 (which you can also use for gaming and the internet) so buy one or be stuck with bland, fuzzy, poor quality DVDs!

Yeah, this movie would be better In blueray since it has cool action sequences and a lot of special effects. If no blueray, a DVD upconverter would be great too.

Problem with Blu-ray and dvd, it don't mean sh!t if you don't have a decent HD TV! Anyway their all way better than the crappy VHS tapes lol, not a lot of point arguing over it guys heh heh!

I only buy Blu-rays if i really want the movie, if i aint that bothered i'll just buy the dvd really. I really don't see the point in buying Blu-ray for cartoon's etc lol??? Big CGI Blockbusters yeah, but not dramas an stuff.

Damn im going hehehe

P.s. An go and look at 0SIRIS First Article in NEWS! Its very good! ; )

Hey superdog, I got my ps3 for only $249. To get the discount I signed up for the Playstation Visa online (you must have good credit to be approved). Search for the online application on google, that's how I found it. The offer may be different now though...

as long as you have an HD TV then you will definitely notice the difference between DVD and Blu-ray! i used to have a 19in and i could see teh difference on that easily and now i have a 32in, its even more of a difference! EVERYTHING looks better on blu ray, even cartoons like The Simpsons Movie or Batman: Gotham Knight - the colour and sharpness are far better than a standard DVD.Even with Cloverfield, the picture is still sharper and better than DVD!

superdog: buy a PS3 and you wont regret it! worth every single penny!

I wont buy a Blu-ray player til I get a better TV. I've seen the difference between the Blu-rays and DVDs, but I'm not sure if its worth the money yet. Most of the movies I'm really into are old B horror flicks and I'm afraid a movie like C.H.U.D. wont look any better on Blu-ray.
Osiris
Osiris - 7/18/2009, 8:46 PM
lol longbow.... I'm pretty sure it wouldn't....I would want The Thing if they did.

I buy movies to watch them not for all the extra's so maybe if blue ray ever gets cheaper then I'll start buying em but till then I'm not paying $30 for a movie just because it will look cooler on my HD T.V

Hi def DVDs went out of business. They lost out in the competition to the blue Ray and went the way of the beta.

Josh@ alright man I'll get a ps3. I already have an xbox so I guesse I'll have to get a wii too. Then I'll be the coolest kid on my block:)

Blue Ray is amazing for most films and not amazing for few films. Blue Ray from regular DVD is just as significant as moving from VHS to DVD. At first a lot of people were offended that a new form of video was being released which forces them to buy a new collection. BUT as time progressed people realized the greatness of DVD in comparison, just as they will for Blue Ray. I own very few movies on Blue Ray and I rent Blue Ray versions from Netflix before I buy so that I know the quality beforehand. I own The Dark Knight, Lost (all seasons), Let the Right One In, Iron Man, Shawshank Redemption, Wrestler, and a few others on Blue Ray. I still buy DVDs for films I like but save the Blue Ray version for those I love.

*My vote is Blue Ray is more than worth the value.

Bluray is only worth it for new movies that used HD cameras, otherwise its a pure waste to buy older movies as the quality isn't any better than dvd.

JoshWilding - 7/19/2009, 4:29 PM
LEE: lol! i hope a couple of the 360 fanboys who paid extra for the HD-DVD app read that! suckers! ;)

DegenX: even with films not filmed with HD cameras the quality is still much better on blu ray!

i just think that it is necessary to say that, although i like star wars SOOO much more than i do the star trek movies, the new star trek was VERY good. i was pretty much raised off of star wars, and i liked this movie A LOT. the acting was great, the characters were great, and the story was excellent. i cannot wait for the next one.

OK people store this in your data banks. The average bluray player costs about 200.00 right now, the ps3 costs about 300.00, a bit more I know but the bluray will play only bluray or dvd, the ps3 on the other hand will play bluray, dvd, wmv, avi, mp3, mp4, ect. almost any file type you can download. I bought a ps3 for the games and on a whim droped a disc with a downloaded copy of dark night (I did pay to see it at the theater twice and have since bought the bluray so no preachin bout piracy OK,) in avi format and to my suprise it played perfectly. My biggest problem was that the ps3 was in my living room and if I wanted to watch blurays in my bedroom or basment I had to bring the ps3 with me and since its mounted to my wall next to my hd projecter (my hi def screen is 8 feet long and 6 feet high) its a real hasle to get it down so I decided to buy a bluray player for the other rooms and thats when I found out that beyond blurays and dvds they cant play so much as a burned cd full of mp3s, how pathetic. So insted I bought another ps3. The tv in my bedroom is a 32 inch tube screen and in spite of that the differance between bluray and dvd is clearly vissable. The bottom line is get a ps3 its worth it for more reasons then I mention here. Since this is a thread about Star Trek I will say that Its by far the best movie of the year so far and I can't wait for a sequal.
