Disney CEO Bob Iger Confirms Stand Alone STAR WARS Films

While rumors have been running wild, Disney CEO Bob Iger has just confirmed that the company does plan on branching out the Star Wars brand by developing solo movies for some of the universe's characters.

Today, Disney CEO Bob Iger was chatting about this recent quarters earnings with CNBC when the conversation was switched over to their recent acquisition of LucasFilm. While talking about the deal, which included LucasFilm's huge Star Wars franchise, Iger confirmed that rumors are true, and that the company will be developing solo Star Wars films. Larry Kasden and Simon Kinberg have been tasked with bringing these projects to life.

Confirming The Stand Alone Movies:

"There has been speculation about some stand alone films and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few stand alone films. Larry Kasden and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters. That are not part of the over all saga, so we still plan to make Star Wars VII, VII, and IX roughly over a six year period starting in 2015. But there are going to be a couple of there films released in that time too. I guess it is big news there has be a fair amount of speculation out there and we thought we would take the time out to day to confirm it."

On What This Means For Fans:

"The implication for Star Wars fans will be great. Because there will be more Star Wars release in the atmosphere so to speak, and that's new and fresh. I'm going to leave it to Kathy(Kennedy) and the Lucas team to provide all the details when they're ready. But I mentioned the two creators that are involved in Larry Kasden and Simon Kinberg. By the way they are both working with J.J.(Abrams) as consultants on Star Wars VII, and of course in Larry's case he wrote Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, and has great pedigree with Lucas and Star Wars. So we are thrilled about that."

The most recent rumor floating around is that a movie based on a solo Yoda adventure was in the works. However, Iger denied to say which characters would be getting the solo film treatment. He did say though that they have had several "creators" pitch them ideas, and want to bring some characters to life. The one that most recently comes to mind is Zack Snyder, and him possibly developing Seven Samurai type Star Wars movie. Snyder's reps have denied this claim, but it wouldn't be the first time someone has denied their involvement with the franchise only to take the job (I'm looking at you Abrams). Looks Disney spotted a great opportunity here at exploiting this franchise.

Boba Fett Movie
Yoda Movie (Rumoured Yesterday)
Young Jedi Knight Series (With the Solo Twins)
Seven Samurai type Star Wars film (Zack Snyder - Rumoured to have pitched)
Star Wars: Force Unleashed (from the ps3 games)??

Many there could be a huge list of Star Wars films in the future!

This is great. If Star Wars can be treated like a 'Comic Universe', there are endless possibilities. New characters are a must and expanding the mythos and universe with them. A new Yoda movie, meh.

I guess this will be ok, but they have to approach it the right way. Don't just give the main characters of existing Star Wars movies a stand alone film. Yoda for example can't be the lead character. Set them in the distant past or on the other side of the galaxy from the action in the movies, with unique casts.

Yoda is my absolute favorite character from the Star Wars Universe. I don't know about you guys. A Yoda solo film interests me more than Episode 7. I really don't understand how some of you think he can't sustain his own film... maybe I'm just optimistic because I sense a Pixar-charm to a Yoda story. Master Yoda exploring Dagobah and the weird creatures that inhabit it sounds like a childhood dream film, to me.

@shiverman20

Its the other way around.CBMs are the space movies of today.Back in the 70's and 80's it was space movies that ruled. Star Wars,Star Trek,Alien(s),Last Starfighter,Buck Rodgers,Flash Gordon and other films were being cranked out.

CBMs took over starting with (Batman 89) but the space epic is just taking it's place back as the kings of summer.

Maybe they'll have a Chewbacca/Wookie solo film on Kashyyyk. I wanted to see more of them in Revenge Of The Sith. Hey, dare I say a Ewoks film... by Pixar, people, by Pixar. And I guess Joe Johnson can do Boba Fett now.

@marvel72 Are you serious about Jar Jar Binks? I don't know if you're joking or not. I don't think Disney would... unless it was a comedy by Seth MacFarlane or Seth Green (just throwing names).

@Tony93 Jawas! I miss those [frick]ers! I need to get the A New Hope on Blu-ray.

@bikyank that's the point I was making, just maybe not clear enough! Obviously CBM's have been the breakthrough genre recently, but it's definitely moving back into space movie territory in a big way, even if CBM's are playing a part in that!

There are already two Ewok stand alone movies that were filmed back in the 80's ...The Ewok Adventure and Battle of/for Endor...or something. This is not really new territory...stand alone films that is. Exploiting Star Wars has been happening since before it was released.
