Naboo, a peaceful planet governed by the young, elusive, but wise Queen Amidala (Portman), is being threatened by the corrupt Trade Federation, puppets of an evil Sith lord and his terrifying apprentice, Darth Maul (Park). The seemingly benevolent Senator Palpatine (McDiarmid) is chief advisor to the queen, though there are suspicions surrounding him. Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (McGregor) are called on to intervene in the trade disputes. Along the way, they acquire an apprentice of their own in the form of young prodigal Anakin Skywalker (Lloyd). They also encounter Jar Jar Binks (Best), a goofy, lizardlike creature who has been banished from his underwater world for his clumsiness. When the Trade Federation launches an attack on Naboo, the queen and her allies must battle hordes of robot troopers while Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan face off against the sinister Darth Maul.

Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace 3D stars Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ian McDiarmid, Pernilla August, Oliver Ford Davies, Hugh Quarshie, Ahmed Best, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Frank Oz, Terence Stamp, Brian Blessed, Andrew Secombe, Ray Park, and is in theaters NOW.

All this focus on "ruining your childhood" etc... these movies aren't about the fans of the original series, and they're aimed at kids/preteens.

They don't care about inconsistencies, undertones, or ruined expectations - they just want to see lightsaber fights and shit blowing up.

Sadly, George regressed to that age.

That pretty much sums it all up.

Yeah, I was 11 when this movie first came out. I was the "target" age... and I thought it was awful.

I saw the original trilogy for the first time only 3 years before that, and even though I enjoyed Return of the Jedi more than Empire Strikes Back before I became a cynical and brooding teenager, I still recognized the difference between the great storytelling and characters of the original trilogy and whatever the Phantom Menace was. I'm still not sure.

But I know I'm just speaking for myself. I think the "kid's movie" excuse doesn't cut it.

Jar Jar is less offensive than Lucas now... my, how times change me.

It is a kid's movie still, but there are far more enjoyable kid's movies out there of better quality and greater humor. The Princess Bride rings a bell.
You can tell by my username that I didn't see the original trilogy in theaters, either. I didn't think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I didn't think it was godawful at the time, and my family had videotaped the original trilogy since I was 4 years-old, so I watched that in repetition for years before TPM came out.

I look back on it and scratch my head. Anyway, this 3D release is meant to make money, money from families and Star Wars geeks with disposable income. The little kids who watch Clone Wars are going to have their parents take them, nothing much we can do about it.

I never really understood why the movie was called "The Phantom Menace". Is the title about Darth Maul? Is it about the Emperor? Maybe the growing Empire? What the hell does it mean?

I think of all the titles gain their meaning by the end of every respective film.

*The Phantom Menace refers to the Sith striking from the unknown
*Attack of the Clones refers to the militarization of the Republic and war
*Revenge of the Sith refers to the Sith's goal realized
*A New Hope refers to the turning of the tide in the Galactic Civil War
*Empire Strikes Back refers to the devastating victories the Empire claims against the Rebellion
*Return of the Jedi refers to a return to balance

Funniest bit was the part about characters standing around in semi-circles. Touche.

As for ruining childhoods - anyone else find it funny that this is the angry battle call of middle aged fanboys everywhere? "Phantom Menace raped my childhood!!!" I'm sorry did the movie go back in time and rape your childhood? Maybe it raped your adult hood but even then it didn't do that. It's a movie. It raped nothing you paper mache plebeians. And if it somehow did I wouldnt broadcast it cause obviously your childhood was weak sauce. Special editions raped nothing either. If your childhood identity is tied up between whether Han shot Greedo first or the other way around you may as well off yourself.
