J.J. Abrams On STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS' Death Star

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has its own Death Star and it goes by the name Starkiller. But don't expect Starkiller to function just the same as its 30-year predecessor. Hopefully someone on the Empire side solved the trench problem over the last 30+ years.

As many Star Wars fans have guessed, there is another Death Star at the center of the conflict in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  But comparing the weapon of mass destruction in The Force Awakens to the on ein 1977's Star Wars may be akin to comparing a .45 revolver to an AK-47.  Said director J.J. Abrmas on Starkiller acknowledging its Death Star heritage,   “It is very much — and it’s acknowledged as such in the movie — apparently another Death Star.  But what it’s capable of, how it works, and what the threat is, is far greater than what the Death Star could have done. Starkiller Base is another step forward, technologically speaking, in terms of power."

Rumors would have everyone believe that the Starkiller functions by imploding suns or stars, causing the destruction of entire solar systems.  Whether this rumor proves to be true remains to be seen but it would certainly count as a technological advancement.  Think about how far warfare on our planet has come in the last 30 years.  The war tech seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is probably not too far off the horizon (if something similar doesn't already exist).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in North American theaters on December 18th.

Starkiller eh... doesn't quite have the same ring to it like Deathstar. Maybe it will grow on me over time. But I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of destruction this thing is capable of.

It took the Empire decades to build the Deathstar and even then it was the size of a moon. The Star Killer is the size of a planet and it's only been a few decades. My guess is that instead of making a planet sized weapon, they retrofitted a planet into a weapon. I also think they're using the force as its energy source.

I like that they are trying to bring some elements from the original trilogy to this one. But it sounds pretty predictable

I'm guessing what makes this different from the original trilogy is that the Starkiller base is powered by the force. But how are they harnessing the force into a weapon? By using the most powerful force user as a connection! Starkiller himself, Galen Marek!

Do they blow it up at the end of the movie? Sound like a regurgitated plot. This is sounding like it's gonna be a let down.

The trench problem was solved over 30 years ago when they built the second Death Star. Thats why they had to destroy it a different way...

This might be the only part of the movie I'm not liking so far. Wish they would've totally stayed away from a Deathstar type weapon, but we'll see.

Think about it guys...if you're in your twenties like the new characters are, chances are you don't know jack about what happened forty years ago. You only know what the history books tell you, which could be manipulated by the Empire.
