Kathleen Kennedy Says STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Will Put The Focus On Characters & Story

After the announcement that John Williams will be scoring Star Wars: Episode VII Executive producer Kathleen Kennedy has provided a few not-too-revealing but interesting updates on the production while speaking on a panel hosted by Warwick Davis (Wicket). Kennedy says she's dividing her time between Lucasfilm and Bad Robot, and has had extensive story meetings with J.J. Abrams and the rest of the writing team, including The Empire Strikes Back scribe Lawrence Kasdan and of course Toy Story 3 scribe Michael Arndt. It sounds as if they are determined not top make the same mistake as the prequels did anyway, by putting more emphasis on character and not excessive CGI "spectacle".

"The story and characters are all we’re talking about right now. We have an amazing team at ILM, who can create fantastic effects, but if we don’t have a great story and characters, the effects mean nothing. I do think making huge popular culture – and I’ve had the good fortune to be a part of a lot it – is really hard to do and get right. And if you don’t spend the time you need on developing characters, and finding stories, complicated stories, the audience gets tired because they think they’re seeing the same thing again and again."

Much to the delight of the fans in attendance, Kennedy also revealed that they will be "combining real locations and special effects" on Star Wars: Episode VII, adding that they'll be using "every single tool in the toolbox to create the look of these movies." What are those tools? "It's using model makers; it's using real droids; it's taking advantage of artwork that you actually can touch and feel," replied Kennedy when pressed by Davis. "And we want to do that in combination with CG effects. We figure that's what will make it real."

Wow this woman is the anti-lucas. Practical effects with CGI and emphasis on story over special effects. Give this woman a medal.

So many times recently I've seen comments from filmmakers saying they'll do one thing then do another.

Iron Man 3, Into Darkness, Man Of Steel are recent examples.

So Kennedy and Co. need to focus on actions not words. Convince us with the film!

@SotNatt - Haven't you seen Transformers or Man of Steel? All special effects and action by the end. That's what else a blockbuster franchise can focus on.

Lol, are you a parody account or something Kingtrav? They make plenty of movies to suit your needs (Transformers, Fans And Furious, Expendables etc) let's have a few smart blockbusters for the rest of us eh?

Well there's a novel approach to making movies: focus on characters and story.

Michael Arndt should write the screenplay for Snyder/Goyer's Superman/Batman movie. Toy Story 3 had great chemistry between the characters.

Ahh...just happy to know that they all thought that Lucas was a giant retard. Hope to see model making make a come back and I also want see great CGI. And I hope they show Jar Jar Binks taking a giant shit on the shiter on board the Death Star the moment Luke blew it to hell. Flashback scene of course.

At least they are going back to what made star wars so great to begin with. Practical effects would be best for this movie.

I'm excited to hear this news, she knows what she's doing. It is about characters and story. It's also about using practical effects and real locations, just like the original. I'm glad they finally see that, George Lucas should take notes on this trilogy, so he never ruins another movie again. He should have hired better writers, instead of himself doing everything, it would have made the prequels soooo much better and soooo much more money.

Could we see some actual puppets and latex masks?

Wonder if George Lucas will ever admit his mistakes on the prequels?

@ZOD, there's only one good Jedi, Luke Skywalker. Then there's his padawans. I wonder if he decides to take on two, instead of one student, that would cause problems I think.
