Natalie Portman Says STAR WARS Almost Ruined Her Acting Career

Natalie Portman Says STAR WARS Almost Ruined Her Acting Career

It seems hard to believe, but at one time people believed Natalie Portman ("Thor"), who won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in 2011's Black Swan, was a bad actress. Portman recalls her struggles after Star Wars.

In 1997, Natalie Portman landed the coveted role of Padme Amidala in George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels. The films cleaned up at the box office, however, they left her acting career in the toilet as many people in Hollywood weren't impressed with her performances. Luckily, the late, great director Mike Nichols ("The Birdcage") went to bat for her.
"Star Wars had come out … and everyone thought I was a horrible actress. I was in the biggest-grossing movie of the decade, and no director wanted to work with me. Mike wrote a letter to Anthony Minghella and said, ‘Put her in Cold Mountain, I vouch for her.’ And then Anthony passed me on to Tom Tykwer, who passed me on to the Wachowskis."

I always thought Portman appeared to be worse than she was because of the wooden dialogue, lazy direction and having zero chemistry with Hayden Christensen ("Shattered Glass"). Guess it wasn't as obvious to everyone else.

They should bring her back in Star Wars.Maybe as a flashback or something with the force. I dont know if she'd be up for it though...

Mars Attack is my shizz. Funny parody of the old school 50's Science Fiction movies.

Talk about a movie that deserves a second chance with a remake.

Shoooot, she would've fooled me. Her acting in those films were 10x better what she gave us in the Thor films. I thought she did pretty well in Episode 3. But eh, what do I know. (Don't answer that lol)

She was AWFUL in Star Wars as well as Hayden Christiansen. I think JJs turn will absolutely trump the prequels.

Being that my views on Portman have never changed (I really don't see her appeal), sure, why not blame it on Star Wars. Those prequels were trash (not that the originals were much better).

Funny, I thought she only won for Black Swan because she was a lesbian. Just like Halle Berry only won because of orgasms.

Natalie Portman is a really good actress (just watch The Professional, V for Vendetta, and Black Swan). The Prequel Trilogy did NOBODY any favors as those movies not only damaged Lucas's reputation but let down all the actors that were a part of them.
Remember, directors influence the performances of the actors for HIS movie. George Lucas failed to create effective performances (save for Ian McDiarmid) and is a significant part on why the Prequel Trilogy underwhelmed many.

@Doopie

I've just always hated Star Wars. Maybe I'm too young, but I found the originals cheesy and boring, and the prequels...ugh...I'd rather watch Halle Berry's Catwoman.

She owned The Professional and stole every scene in Beautiful Girls. Based on those two movies alone I think everyone knew what she was capable of before Star Wars.

No worries Portman with the complete shit of a script they came up with for the Prequel films even Daniel Day Lewis would be seen as a mediocre actor. So it is not your fault I blame Lucas for that one.

@DrunkenNukem @brainac13 SW didnt put her on the map. The Professional put her on the map. and I love Mars Attack! that movie is pure 50's B roll science fiction cinema right there

I dont even need to read this article before responding. Portman was a gift for Lucas in these abominable prequels. With his horrid directorial skills ( Faster...more intense ) he couldn't utilize the talent at his disposal. Portman in no way needed Star Wars as a platform for anything....Star Wars + Portman = Batman & Robin + Clooney.
