Phil Lord And Chris Miller Reveal How They'll Be Credited For Their Work On SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

Lucasfilm fired directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller halfway through shooting Solo: A Star Wars Story and hired Ron Howard to take their place. What credit will they receive? The answer may surprise you!

When it was first revealed that Phil Lord and Chris Miller would take the helm of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the reaction from fans of the franchise was overwhelmingly positive. The filmmakers had made a name for themselves with the Jump Street movies (which went a long way in turning around the career of Channing Tatum) and The LEGO Movie, an animated feature which far exceeded expectations.

Unfortunately, their love of improv didn't sit well with Lucasfilm bosses and Kathleen Kennedy made the shocking decision to relieve them of their duties halfway through the shooting process last year.

Ron Howard was quickly brought on to direct and while it's thought that at least some of Lord and Miller's work
remains, the vast majority has been reshot by Howard, turning Solo into a very different beast. So, what credit will the filmmaker's receive on the upcoming movie? "We were really proud of the many contributions we made to that film," Miller said at the third annual GLAS Animation Festival on Friday. "In light of the creative differences, we elected to take an executive producer credit."

That's a surprise but is also probably indicative of just how much Howard has changed Solo and what little of the tone and style they brought to the table remains. What do you guys think of this news? Should they have received a co-director credit or have they made the right decision? Sound off below.

I‘m excited for this, ain’t nothing gonna happen if it sucks (not like with the irreversible damaga TLJ did) and if it’s good I can get rid of that foul stench Johnson left.

Everything about this movie looks ok except Han.
Han looks and sounds bad.

Oh yeah, the one thing that could help me get over the TLJ induced Star Wars apathy - a half-reshot Han Solo prequel without Han Solo.

I am really starting to wonder, does executive producer really has any meaning? I got the feeling that people how had some contributions to a movie in some form or another get this credit when no other credit fits

@MalseMarcel - a lot of the time Executive Producer is an honorary credit and can be given for a number of different reasons if the people in question made an important contribution to the film (creatively, financially, etc.) but is also usually given to the highest member of the production team (for example, Kevin Feige in the MCU movies, Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder in a number of DCEU films, or Kathleen Kennedy in the newer Star Wars films)

My understanding is that it's kind of the credit they give when someone's contribution to the final film doesn't quite fit into any other category - for example, I think Stan Lee has received the credit in at least a few Marvel movies, as a co-creator of most of the characters. In this instance, they wouldn't be eligible for a co-director credit as the majority of their work was replaced by Howard's, while the Director's Guild has strict rules regarding co-director credits (like, the Guild would have to recognise Ron Howard as their directing partner officially for them to receive the credit).

Wow Alan Smithee's hard at work, these days, isn't he?

He's given us some real classics, in recent years. Fant4stic, Justice League and now this:
Solo - A Star Wars Travesty.

Can't wait.

@BootyPeep - Each other? No.

Kasdan. When the writer wears the pants on a film shoot over the directors, it's time to call it a day.

@BootyPeep - Kathleen Kennedy. She runs the show and does not like to be questioned, and seems to have a penchant for making the male character stupid and weak, while making all the females "strong women."
