Simon Kinberg Discusses The Expanded Universe's Role In STAR WARS Spin-Offs

As well as writing and producing The Fantastic Four and X-Men: Days of Future Past, Simon Kinberg is also working on a Star Wars spin-off. Here, he talks about exactly how much of a role that the Expanded Universe will have on these new big screen adventures...

So, as we'd previously assumed, it sounds as if fans of the Expanded Universe shouldn't expect to see any of those stories have an impact on what we see in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII or beyond. However, the fact that they are at least turning to those for inspiration should come as good news to many, but are you still disappointed that after so many comics, books and video games set in that world, that none of it is canon in the film series? Or, are you excited to see brand new stories? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts on these comments in the usual place!

I'll take my own personal opinion of what's canon and what's not. That shit they pulled in the CG Clone Wars series was bull, and according to Lucas, it IS canon. The animated Clone Wars series from 2004 (which conflicts with the CG one) was way better. Wasn't a fan of the EU books much myself, so I can't say I'm too concerned. The Battlefront 2 video game also provided a nice chunk of info about the Clone Wars and the transition from the Republic to the Empire, and the fate of the clones themselves, in the campaign mode that I like very much. But as far as anything goes, I don't give a rat's ass about "official" canon when it comes to SW anymore.

6 of the 7 films Kinberg has written for (including XXX: State of the Union, X-Men 3, and Jumper) have been critically panned. His only successful writing credit was on Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, but that was a collaboration with three other writers.

The fact that he is a writer on X-Men: Days of Future Past, Fantastic Four (reboot), and now Star Wars Rebels does not give me much confidence in the projects...

Episode 1,2, & 3 should be treated like they never happened.

He actually has sole credit for the Days of Future Past screenplay, which scares the [frick] out of me. Most of the dialogue in X-Men: TLS was atrocious.

Disappointed? I'll tell you about disappointed.

I actually like the prequel trilogy, despite growing up with the original trilogy. When Lucas sold out, and it was announced we were getting another 3 movies plus spin-offs, I was ecstatic.

Then J.J. fricking Abrams was announced as Director. At that point, my poor 7 year old inner child died a little bit knowing that Star Wars will be ruined by that utter cock-knocker of an oxygen thief. He just shouldn't be allowed to take on any established property. Let him do his own weird thing, he's great at that. But don;t give him something with years of back-story, and fan expectation, because ultimately, he thinks he knows better than all of us.

Back on topic though, Kinberg isn't a great writer at all, so I have no hope for this irrespective of Abrams.

That is total BS. You can't just give us all these great games, shows, and books, fit them in the movies universe and then say "You know that stuff that happened? It didn't."

@MajorTom.....They never happened,I'll take the Holy Trinity and the Clone Wars and that's it,same as I refuse to acknowledge the awful Ewoks movies and Droid cartoons, those prequles don't exist.

EU not part of cannon? How are they going to explain that? Did they go through a black hole?

Good. I'd rather they just focus on telling a good story than become slaves to comic book/novel continuity.

There isn't really much confusion here, it's simple - movies count nothing else does. And that is for the best.

If they are picking up after RotJ and ignoring the rest that came after, yet is supposed to be before...., then I will be a happier camper.

But if the same hack that wrote some shitty damn movies in the last few decades is involved, I have very very low expectations.

Listen, you may or may not like what Lucas did with Star Wars after the original trilogy but sorry suckers,he created it all!
I'm not a fan of all the stuff but there is good & bad in all the Star Wars related works.
No property is perfect, won't ever happen. Just be glad it's continuing. Pray that more good than bad comes of it.

The EU was never canon (thank god) - people should have realized this from the start. Most of it was just just glorified fan-fiction. IMO, only the movies should be considered canon
Nick56
Nick56 - 4/21/2014, 7:59 AM
And no this won't be confusing because like 99% of general audiences either have never read the EU or don't give a shit about it.

I want to see Boba Fett climbing out of the Sarlaac Pit after Luke and company leave the area. He's badly hurt, but, walks off and behind him Jabba's barge explodes. He stops and turns around to look, then looks back and he sees his ship and boards his ship and takes off.

I tried watching the prequels the other night and my God they're more terrible that I remember...

Screw the Books....the best one was Crystal of the Minds Eye when the universe and its inhabitants were still a mystery. Episode 1,2, and 3 should as others have suggested be treated as a Bobby Ewing. The Clone Wars animated series was rubbish. Looking forward to Rebels though. I thought Lucas would do the prequel right as i truly believed in his powers of creation having done what i thought was the best Star Wars of all....A New Hope, or as i like to call it.....Star Wars. He also did American Graffiti and THX-1138 which i personally really enjoyed. What happend to that guy? He aged out i guess and i truly believe J.J. will do what we the real fans have all been Jonesing for.

I don't know why you guys knock the prequels. Of course they are going to be totally different from Episodes 4-6,it was before the Empire had control. It was still in the days of the Republic and a time of civility.
gaikinger
gaikinger - 4/21/2014, 8:52 AM
I knock the prequels because they were soooo awful on so many levels. The convoluted story, the terrible acting, the overkill on CG, Jar Jar Binks.... The only good thing about the Prequels was Darth Maul....thats it. They even managed to lame up Boba Fett,,,,uhgggg! Thats why.

KidGoku - They are so terrible! It actually makes me angry when i watch them? My little kids liked them but as they get older even they are starting to say WTF when pondereing them in context with the original trilogy now.
