STAR WARS TV Series Described As "Deadwood In Space"

Producer Rick McCallum has revealed a little more about the long in-development Star Wars show, which IS still going to happen..eventually! It seems this take on the Galaxy far far away won't be just for the kiddies..

While speaking to Den Of Geek, Producer Rick McCallum was quizzed about this Star Wars tv series we keep hearing about, but never seems to go anywhere. Well he sheds a bit of light on why that is. McCallum explains that although they have over 50 hours of second-draft scripts, it would take a year of prep before any shooting could be done because "they’re all very complex". He also talks about how expensive they would be to produce, and the pros and cons of talking the show to either Network or Cable television. But most interestingly he reveals that the show would be a more adult affair, and even compares it to HBO's ultra violent, profanity laden Western series, Deadwood..

Our biggest problem is that these stories are adult. I mean…these are like Deadwood in space. It so unlike anything you’ve ever associated with George before in relation to Star Wars. These aren’t for kids. I mean, we hope they’ll watch, but it’s not being targeted at 8-to-9 year old boys. The situation we have is that each episode – or if you put two hour long episodes together – is bigger than any film we’ve ever done. It’s on the Avatar level and we’ll only have about $5-6 million we can spend on each episode.

The plot of the series (which last we heard had the working title: "Star Wars: Underworld") is said to focus on the seedier side of the Star Wars universe - smugglers, bounty hunters etc - so it makes sense that things would need to be a bit grittier, but Deadwood? I'll believe it when I see it, and hopefully that is sooner rather than later. Click the link back to Den Of Geek below to check out the full interview.

This sounds great. Not really a SW fan, but the oldies with Han Solo and "Jaba the Hut"? are great.

Firefly was really cool, to bad is got canceled. But that series could have been better with a solid budget (the sets was all too obvious at times) which I guess this Star Wars series would have. Game of Thrones budget at least.

I'd like to say the ship has probably sailed on this project, but the reality is I'd still watch it.

He needs to stop banging on about the cost though, movie quality television is achievable on a TV budget(Game of Thones for example) and if it's well written mediocre visuals can be forgiven.

Maybe he didn't mean the series "Deadwood", he just meant the acting and story lines literally would be like dead wood in space (like AOTC)

$5 - 6 million per episode? I wonder if it'd be cheaper if everything wasn't CG...

HBO is spending $20MM on each episode of Game of Thrones. I call BS.

not pitch Star trek as wagon Train to the stars. Wow what a rip off.

Too bad Lucas needs everything to be CG then the budget would be manageable because nothing with practical effects like his first 3 movies and many of the best sci-fi movies were even made for around what these guys want to spend on 3 episodes of a series (e.g. Aliens, Empire, etc.) and Game of Thrones cost around 4-5 million per episode to produce so what is the hold up on this thing? Of course if Lucas is writing it I could care less, he lost any credibility with his story lines. He needs to get the writers of the books to write the scripts or at least people that like SW to do it.

[frick] Lucas, that fat barrel of monkey spunk has retired so if and when thsi series is made it will (hopefully) be in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing.

yeah guys, it they don't need to spend the bread on production (cg?). Solid stories, solid characters, solid acting, and great execution & development will make this show awesome.

There's a lot of classic TV shows (Star Trek, STNG, Twilight Zone, etc) where the focus was not at all on special effects.

If they are concerned with good special effects, just save your $ Lucasfilm, & send us 20 minute mindless cutscenes to videogames.

When Rick says "dark", he actually means poorly lit caverns, wretchedly scripted dialog, nonsensical and irrational character motivation, and a shocking lack of pacing.

Until I see this listed in the TV Guide I refuse to believe they are actually making this TV series. How long have they been leading on the SW fans with this constant tease?

Hope this fails and everyone involved gets shit-canned and then kicked out of their respective homes to live on the streets of Bellingham Washington begging for scraps. The hatred for Lucas and all things Pre-RofJ is strong in this one. Also hard to swallow "'Deadwood' in space" coming from the company run by the guy that claims Han was defending himself against Greedo, fat asshole. [frick] Star Wars, it is dead. [frick] Lucas, wish he would die already.

Not to get to Forceful (!) about it, but the reason the original trilogy was amazing and the prequels generally suck is because the prequels were all darkness and melodrama. Every character in the original trilogy was charming, funny, or inexplicably badass. They tried to force the "badass" quality on every aspect of the prequels, and it made the characters throwaways, and took any real humor out of the stories. That is why the only truly compelling scenes in the prequels involved lightsabers. Some of the darker moments- Palpatine's seduction of Anakin, Grevious flat out killing Jedi, and Anakin murdering Padawan, could have been really great, but there was no tempering them with the humor and charm of the originals. So they just came out as cold, evil, (poorly acted) crap. Making a dark Star Wars series is the least thoughtful and meekest way to tell the story, and it's tiring. If it was light with elements of dark peppered it, it could be really great. There are two sides to the force, idiots.

ieatlegos- Yeah, as dark as the original trilogy could sometimes get, it was always charming, light-hearted and especially FUN. Hell, that's why Whedon's now being worshipped on a daily basis and it's also why the Clone cartoon series is loved. The more they go towards the darkside, the more they fail.

did anyone watch that hilarious video where a guy with a weird voice just trashes phantom menace compared to the early star wars? well one scene in that clip shows george's private screening of his just completed phantom menace. basically, rick macullum and the other yes men have these 'wtf?' faces, and as soon as lucas turns around, they just kiss his butt. Nuff said.

Maybe if the prequels hadn't been marketed towards 8-9 year olds, they would've been more popular.

I hope this never gets made. Star Wars is dead. Let it rest. Lucas is an opportunistic, greedy, one note hack. I'm tired of him raping my childhood memories and retconning everything every time he re-releases these movies.

Screw Lucas
Screw Star Wars.

Want to get my attention? Get someone else to remake all six movies in 20 years. But until then, MEH.

You mean they can't be like every other series in existence and have season 1 be low budget and then every additional season pay for itself? These guys don't know how to do TV
