On January 23, 2018, the list of nominees for the 90th annual Academy Awards were announced. John Williams received a nomination in the Best Score category for his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, bringing his total nomination count to 51. This nomination allowed him to beat his own previous record for the second most nominated person in Academy Award history.

Walt Disney holds the all-time record with a total of 59 nominations. With his upcoming work on Solo: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Star Wars: Episode IX, Williams may very well increase his number.

With his advancing age and reduced workload, only time will tell if he can collect the eight more nominations needed to reach the top spot.

Not that he needs the recognition, but he definitely deserves it. That man is a legend.

While the last jedi score was lacking in new themes, it is excellently scored, and unlike TFA, I could actually here the score during the action.

John Williams, like Hans Zimmer, is one of those composers who has such a signature sound that you can instantly recognise but at the same time can make each movie score sound completely fresh and new. I didn't know that he's composing the score for Solo. Has that actually been confirmed?

@bcom - He's not. He's only composing the main theme. Sorry, guys.

Luke coming out of the hanger near the end of the film....the score was great there. The rest was ok.

According to Wikipedia, Michael Giacchino is scoring Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom.

Congrats to John Williams for the nomination. It was a very good score for a very good movie!
