Why STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Destroyed Hosnian Prime Instead Of Coruscant

Many fans have wondered why the Senate had relocated to Hosnian Prime in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it turns out a creative clash between J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and Lucasfilm led to the change.

Emperor Palpatine took control of Coruscant in the Star Wars prequels and ruled over the Senate from there. However, by the time The Force Awakens rolled around, the New Republic-controlled Senate had, for some reason, moved to a newly created planet called Hosnian Prime.

We didn't get to spend much time there as it was destroyed by the First Order's Starkiller Base, but it seems the original plan was to lay waste to Coruscant in what would have been a truly shocking moment for fans. "Basically [Bad Robot] wanted it blown up," Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo shared in a now-deleted tweet. "[Lucasfilm] didn’t. Hosnian Prime was the unsatisfying middle ground. It happens."

"I should say 'some folks at' because it’s not like companies have points of view," he later clarified.

You can't really blame Lucasfilm for wanting to spare Coruscant because that is a planet with potential moving forward. We've yet to revisit the Jedi Temple, for example, though we do know Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX would have taken us there for an epic final stand against the First Order. Unfortunately, Abrams scrapped those plans and we got that CGI heavy aerial battle above Exegol instead.

Your guess is as good as ours when it comes to when we might head back to Coruscant, but the door being left open for another visit is no bad thing, even if it lessened the stakes in The Force Awakens.

Do you think Abrams was right to want to destroy the iconic planet from the Star Wars prequels?

Damn. I literally just praised TFA. That would have really changed my opinion of the film, and JJ. Why do they feel the need to destroy what George built?

@DarthOmega - i mean, by the end of the saga what even is left? the jedi never bounced back, the sith are all dead again. Mandalorians seem to be on their last legs, scattered with a homeworld turned to glass. The nightsisters are toast. We can kinda assume the republic and the empire are gone. Obviously no more separatists. So yeah even if ol Palps is gone for good, he basically took all the cool stuff with him.

@DarthOmega - I think it would have added a little bit more emotional impact, but I also think it would have been taken as a slight against the prequels given the context.

@FishyZombie - That and all the infanticide.

Interesting enough, the Jedi never seemed very interested in stopping slavery at all...but trade routes... Lmfao

when i first saw the movie, i thought that was Corescant. Anyway i still don't think it matters much unless there were notable characters still living there. At least Alderron had Bail there.

only "good" part of the trilogy

Force Awakens was a rip off of a New Hope, but at least it was a good rip off.

Last Jedi wasted so much time on pointless shit, but at least it had nice visuals, might have the best visuals of all live action star wars

Rise Of Skywalker has no possible redeeming qualities.

should have done Duel Of Fates, a decent end would at least make Last Jedi worth sitting through and force awakens was good enough.

Keeping this trilogy out of my collection

Do they ever Name Drop Hosnian Prime? Because in my head its basically just been Coruscant the whole time. You tell me the capital of the republic is destroyed, and I'm going to assume its Coruscant
