VIDEO: Why The Scientists From PROMETHEUS Behaved So Stupidly

If you have seen Ridley Scott's Prometheus, you know that quite a few members of the crew made some less than intelligent decisions throughout the course of the movie. Find out why in this hilarious parody vid..

If like me you were left a bit bewildered by the behavior of some of the characters in Prometheus (trying to make friends with a mutant alien cobra thing, getting lost in a facility you just mapped, trying to escape from a rolling circular spaceship by running in front of the [frick]ing thing etc etc) then this vid from Barely Political may clear up a few things!..

Prometheus is out now, and despite having a few WTF moments is actually pretty damn good.

I can only hope we get an alien or horror film in the future were people don't act so dumb.

I watched Attack the Block last night and found myself wondering what it would be like to see a film with adults that can some how do half the sh!t the kids did in that film.

If there's ever an alien invasion stick with teenagers, there over hyped drug taking alcohol drinking minds seem not only deal with with the situation, but come up with a way to fight back.

Scientist will be the death of us, with all there "I need to know" talk. No you don't just go the other way.

@ BlackFlash - are you saying Elliot should have simply taken a bat to ET's face, scraped his left over mangled carcas off his shoe and not even wonder where it came from? Would have made for a very different movie! But you do have a point!

If it would have shown the punky and dummy the scientists smoke a fat doob before going outside then their dumbness and punkys freekout would be more believable.

If you see an alien cobra, put your face next to it, but don't lead it on with your sexy face. I mean, come on.

Good to know.

Promethus' script was screwed up...I find it AMAZING that people are going so far out of their way to explain the inconsistencies. It was the Phantom Menace of the Alien Franchise. It was Indiana Jones 4.

Way to go Lindelof, you managed to make another non-sensical mess that is just going to end up being a joke.

They got lost because those two guys didn't get the scan, it looks like it was only sent to the ship. (Remember that they had to ask the captain if the blip was moving, they can't see that stuff)

If you were a biologist, and you were introduced to the first life form on another planet, would you act all stupid "oh mah goshhhhh oh mah goshhhhh look at you, you so pretty!"? Probably.

If you were on another planet, and you were told that there was air, and absolutely nothing was wrong with it, would you take your helmet off and be able to say you breathed air on another planet? I would. I'd do it in a heart beat.

A giant ship is hurtling toward you, do you think you'd be able to think "ok, over there should be safe"? Probably not, you'd be screaming and running as far away as you can get.

Why are people ragging on the actions of the scientists?

Why do people presume they were the "best" scientists Earth had to offer? There was nothing "scientific" about this mission! Weyland paid for it himself as he wanted to contact the aliens in an attempt to save his own life. He got a crew of "capable" people together to do the leg work and find these creatures. He already had David under his control, an android that was smarter than all those scientists put together, so there was no need to seek out the best of the best. He just needed these people to see what was going on and find if there were any aliens on the planet, then he would be awoken and taken to them.

Stop nitpicking, you guys sound like idiots who can't think for yourselves.

"If you were a biologist, and you were introduced to the first life form on another planet, would you act all stupid "oh mah goshhhhh oh mah goshhhhh look at you, you so pretty!"? Probably."

Not to mention, the other dude was getting high in his suit and the biologist, who was finally getting on that guys good side, was joking around with him and teasing the snake creature for the other dudes entertainment. The nerdy biologist was only trying to get on the geologists good side by messing around with the snake and showing the guy that he wasn't a pussy. Its not hard to understand at all.

@Bojac

I think your missing the point here. This is supposed to be a historic program like Apollo. You don't just send any scientists on such mission, you send only the best after they have been screened and trained and tested.Part of that training is how to deal with the unexpected.Example,on the Apollo 11 lunar mission, the Eagle was about to land on auto pilot when Neil Armstrong spotted a huge boulder in the landing zone.

Armstrong landed the spacecraft on manual with only moments of fuel left.

That is reacting to the unknown based on training ,experience and common sense.

The examples you present may be what you would do,but that is not the point.

The point is that the world's best scientists on a mission to meet alien life should have been trained on what to do and not to do if/when they meet such life.
WarnerBrother
WarnerBrother - 6/25/2012, 1:31 PM
@AbeVigoda

There was nothing scientific about the mission except the need to use alien science to save Weyland's life.

David may have been smarter then everybody else but by Weyland's own words he was also limited because he had no soul.If your Peter Weyland thats a pretty big risk to put your life in the hands of someone who your don't totally trust. Btw even if the crew were only "capable" and not the best they should have been good enough to follow simple protocols. Bare in mind Weyland Industries already had an off world colonization program in effect for years so it shouldn't be rocket science to expect even capable people to take simple precautions.

I liked the movie, I think people are just nit picking, over analyzing and critiquing in a jaded way. Relax people, it's just a movie.

To counter the "scientists are dumb, they took off their helmets on a n alien planet" complaint, did anyone complain when the stereotypical marines leader from Avatar took off his oxygen mask, multiple times, and tried to seem tough by holding his breath?
pintoman
pintoman - 6/25/2012, 3:39 PM
It's not that the scientists were dumb...it's that they violate the setup. They were afraid to go into the main room—so they head back to the ship only to get lost. Then, later, they go into that room, without demonstrated fear, and proceed to do things their characters wouldn't do (based on the setup). This is something one would expect from cheap "B" movies made in the 70's you find at a drive-in. It's talking down to the audience.

They added things to the script to make it feel more complicated than it is. It's probably some sort of web marketing campaign to spin the script problems as "thought provoking".

Prometheus was really bad considering it's pedigree.

@GrayFox: In the future when trying to show that an aspect of a given movie did not suck, I would not attempt to do so by comparing it to the biggest cliche, CGI-laden, thinly-plotted shitfest to hit the screen in decades.
