SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS Has Better Second Weekend At U.S. Box Office Than BLACK WIDOW

Thanks to Marvel Studios, it's going to be another strong weekend for the North American box office as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings continues to dominate.

Grossing $9.7 million on its second Friday, it's now looking like the movie will earn around $32 million during its second weekend. That's higher than the $25 million grossed by Black Widow during its second weekend, and while that was available on Disney+ for $29.99 on Premier Access, it also came out at a time moviegoers had a little more confidence in theaters.

Now, Shang-Chi has racked up around $141 million over 10 days, a mighty figure that beats Black Widow's $131 million. It's worth remembering that Natasha Romanoff is also an Avengers character who fans had wanted to see in a solo outing for years, whereas Shang-Chi is a relative unknown.

Elsewhere in the domestic box office, James Wan's Malignant tied with Free Guy for second place (that could change when the final numbers are in).

That horror movie is doing pretty well with $5.2 million - especially when it's available on HBO Max for free - and in our review, we noted: "Make it through some of Malignant's early pitfalls, and you'll be rewarded with a chilling tale that proves to be the creepiest, craziest horror movie of 2021."

What, if anything, did you decide to watch on the big screen this weekend?

Malignant was terrible, james wan’s streak of good horrors directed by him is over.it was if he was directing a horror movie it was reason to get excited but not anymore

@Tpo81 - I think the whole intro had to be played for laughs. The movie should definitely have comedy as one of the genres. I burst out laughing when the doctor shot the tranq-rifle.

@DR3D - you’re right definitely the beginning was such bad acting it had to be intended that way

@Tpo81 - I actually really liked it. Loved the cinematography and the twist was actually pretty shocking to me.

68% drop is pretty standard. I'd imagine it would have been ALOT worse if there was a release on D+ at the same time.

I also read somewhere its not doing too bad in international markets. The ones that are open anyway.

Good for them..

@Jaykay21 - I read that in the past, Simu criticized the Chinese communist regime and not only did they not forget, but it has resurfaced. So it doesn’t look like it will be released in China. I guess they can’t take the heat.

@TheWalkingCuban - Well Black Widow also didn't open there, and looks like Eternals won't either. Also I've noticed it's wasn't a 68% drop, actually quite a bit less. so even better news.

@Jaykay21 - right, with Eternals I’ll call it a pattern. I wonder why there would be one. F&F9 got a release there. China hate marvel now you think? If indeed this continues that is. If not, then why no BW? Communist Russia? That’ll be my guess. And maybe those two back to back is enough for them to say no more afterwards either. After all Chinese movies are making a ton and won globally in the worst of the pandemic and not just by default but by a ton of people going to theaters there.

@TheWalkingCuban - Either way the ball is in China's court. Hollywood wants as much revenue as they can get from over there so I can forsee in the next couple of years there being more exclusive deals where Hollywood agrees that they have to submit heavily edited and censored versions for that audience, kind of like how Iron Man 3's release there had a different edit.

@Jaykay21 - @TheWalkingCuban *I can not imagine Disney allowing the next Avengers movie to be banned by China but if Shang-Chi is in it that's what's going to happen. Unless the character goes to a Midnight Sons Movie all he'll get is solo films.

@Jaykay21 - the billion plus days mayb over for longer than we thought, not just pandemic recovery but political backlash.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 9/12/2021, 12:55 PM
@JDL - that would be weird, but I can see it happening. No more hurting china’s feelings, and if it don’t work they’ll look stupid, might as well keep em in.
JDL
JDL - 9/12/2021, 6:17 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - It also occurs to me that other actors who get revenue sharing might not want to work with him if there is no China release.

@JDL - what a mess uh? Whatcha gonna do

@TheWalkingCuban - Let it play out. If it goes like I think in the future you'll have to choose politics or career.

@JDL - being the son of a Cuban, yeah. I could see that

Understendable. Shang-Chi was awesome.

In retrospective, i've almost forgotten about Black Widow and i saw that twice in cinemas.

TheWalkingCuban - 9/12/2021, 5:38 AM
@kylo0607 - I didn’t like her very much in her own movie, her two main friends were more entertaining. But then she never really stood out to me except for on Winter soldier. Great on that.

should also take into consideration the labour day weekend boosted it up last week and with most kids back to school now the daily take is probably... well less.

I mean, this is ultimately a good sign for theaters in general. The box office is getting to about what a typical marvel film would get before the pandemic, at least in terms of domestic. So good news.

We're gonna have to watch out for the Chinese market here. After some tweets from simu Liu came out about the Chinese government its basically guaranteed to not be released there. Really going to hurt the worldwide box office.
TopBoy
TopBoy - 9/12/2021, 5:39 AM
@Origame - Eternals probably won’t get a China release either because of Chloe Zhao.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 9/12/2021, 5:58 AM
@TopBoy - Yeah. Neither one was going to be released in China either way. The CCP does not tolerate ANY criticism.
Origame
Origame - 9/12/2021, 6:00 AM
@TopBoy - oh yeah definitely. I didn't bring it up because eternals isn't really designed for a Chinese audience like Shang chi clearly was.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 9/12/2021, 7:26 AM
@Origame - I don't know if that's truly the case. While, I'm positive Marvel hoped to pander to Asian audiences, China specifically has not responded to this kind of thing in the past. That, along with the Communist Party's ban on "spiritual/supernatural" elements in film should have made it clear it would not get released in China.
Battabing
Battabing - 9/12/2021, 7:52 AM
@Origame - There won't be a Chinese release, not after old comments from Simu resurfaced.
Origame
Origame - 9/12/2021, 8:14 AM
@Feralwookiee - well I mean, it's all pretty steep in Chinese mythology. And feige has been trying to convince the Chinese to have it release there, so it's at least showing that they were trying to get it approved there.

Heck, if it were just to appeal to the Asian audience, Amadeus cho would've made arguably more sense, since he's more well known and his existence was already established in age of ultron.
Origame
Origame - 9/12/2021, 8:15 AM
@Battabing - hence why I said "basically guaranteed not to release there", for the same reason you mentioned.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 9/12/2021, 9:26 AM
@Origame - Wait...seriously? Did he have a cameo in AOU and I missed it all these years?
