SHAZAM! Early Box-Office Projections Indicate A Decent $48 Million+ Opening Weekend

In the wake of the monumental success of DC’s Aquaman last year, Shazam! is likely to do respectable numbers at the box office when it flies into theaters in April. Hit the jump for more details...

The initial opening weekend forecasts for Shazam! indicate that the DC film could make upwards of $48 million over the course of its debut weekend, according to Pro Box Office. The numbers have gone slightly up as the release date draws near, as the estimate a few weeks ago was $40 million.

This may just be a conservative prediction, as some believe the film could possibly break $60 million or more during opening weekend.

Shazam! also has to contend with the fact that it is placed in the middle of two of the biggest comic book movie releases of the year; Captain Marvel and fervently-anticipated Avengers: Endgame. The former is already estimated to open at a whopping $160 Million, but Shazam will be coming an entire month after the Marvel Studios effort and will really only face competition from the new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic, Pet Sematery.

It is likely the DC film will win the weekend and do decent numbers in the coming weeks until Avengers: Endgame, which will almost certainly dominate the box office and break all sorts of records.

Shazam!, directed by David Sandberg and starring Zachary Levi, is set to land in theaters on April 5th, 2019.

That's a very low prediction

@DnA - Predictions were low for Aquaman as well

Im sure it will make more than that, considering how little people know about Shazam though, it probably wont make Aquaman level money, maybe around as much as Wonder Woman

Well, Aquaman had the lowest domestic DCEU opening so far, and we've seen where that ended.

@Kyos - sure, but makreting was way more agressive. Shazam only has one trailer that is SEVEN months old. I don't understand the strategy.

@Kyos - It also opened at a completely different time of year; these aren't irrelevant details.

@Alex35 - Yeah, not quite sure what they're waiting for. There should be enough finished material for a fancy new trailer.

@EskimoJ - Definitely. Shazam!'s in a more difficult position overall, coupled with less general recognition. But it also doesn't have as much pressure, and can be a financial success easier.

@Kyos - Aquaman opened in a window where every day played like a weekend for around 12 days straight because people were on vacation... Shazam won’t have that advantage.

Great to be a comic book fan who as a child dreamed of seeing these movies made. Shazam is a fun character. I can’t wait!!

@Superfriends1975 - It sure is. As a kid, even in my wildest dreams, I never imagined so many different beloved characters would be adapted to the big(and small)screen.

Will definitely make more than that. Most likely will be defeated by competition from Avengers Endgame.

Why is everyone now saying that Aquaman had no competition? Wasnt it originally going to be slaughtered in the long run by Bumblebee, Mary Poppins, and Mortal Engines? I mean sure now we know those were all duds, but not then...

As for Shazam, I think that WB is keeping it low for this one. Shazams budget is only like $90 million, probably keeping marketing at like $50 million. Still think we're getting a 4/5 minute trailer in March to announce ticket sales, go for around a $60 million opening.

I think my favorite piece of marketing material for this movie was the B roll with the interviews with Levi and the kids. Levi seemed so genuine, if he sticks with DC he could end up being the "Chris Evans" of the team

@DannRamm113 - If they were "duds" then they weren't competition. That point aside, there does seem to be some revisionist history at play (they said the same thing about BP's competition last year).

@EskimoJ - even a dud can be front loaded
