The Lizard: Was the portrayal bad or actually good?

The Lizard: Was the portrayal bad or actually good?

Here are my thoughts on the "lackluster" villain in The Amazing Spider-Man.

Editorial Opinion

Everyone on here by now knows that The Lizard is my all time favorite supervillain. I have seen quite a bit of complaints from people about The Lizard's portrayal in The Amazing Spider-Man. Yes, It was disappointing to not see Martha and Billy in the movie or at least a mention would have been at least nice so the character could have had a little bit more development in the film. Here are my thoughts on the portrayal of the character.

Dr.Curt Connors: I feel that Dr.Connors was wonderfully played in the film by Rhys Ifans. I feel the character had slightly more depth than Otto Octavious which made the audience care for him more. As a regular person, I feel Connors was portrayed how I always thought he should have been. Sympathetic and tragic. Watching the character on screen gave me the feeling I would get when I would read the comics.

Now, for his reptillian alter-ego.

The Lizard: Alot of people have complaints about him. Personally, I don't see why, other than a couple bad shots. The Lizard was portrayed as he should have been. He always had the cartoony and silly motive of making everyone reptiles like him. But, what do you expect from a villain who is a 8 foot lizard? He isn't an insane villain. The lizard serum infected Connors' mind. Giving The Lizard a personality of his own. I was glad they gave him the coat in the film, it looked good but not as good as he looked overall. Plus, pants on a giant lizard would have looked rediculous.

Overall: I know this is a very short editorial, but I wanted to get my point out there. The character was perfect with the only minor problem being no Martha or Billy.

I loved this movie, and felt it was the best of the 4!! The villain was better than all the others as far as being truly menacing and terrifying. Green Goblin lost his mojo when he showed up looking like a Power Ranger. Doc Ock was being mind controlled (which I thought was dumb) Then Venom was wasted, and Sandman was just plain misused! I don't get how people can crap all over this movie when it had better EVERYTHING than the first 3, but yet they let TDKR slip by. This movie was FAR superior that that garbage! Good write up! I think possibly his wife and son may have been a part of his life, but they would have taken away from his development into villain status. Maybe they were at her mother's visiting lol

You must selectively read post on here if you think people don't criticize TDKR.

I don't know what to say, really. I have thoughts, feelings... strong ones, in fact, but I don't know what I can say that will actually hit home.

I'm among the crowd who feels "Spider-man 3" was better than "the Amazing Spider-man".

I also understand that there were EXTENSIVE rewrites, mandates on what to leave in... but I'm not really blaming one person. I hate saying it, because the term is thrown around so lightly by a lot of people, but TASM was a bastardization of Spider-man, and should not have been filmed with the script they settled on. But nearly $745 million disagrees.

I didn't hate Doctor Connors. I thought a lot of it actually made some sense - right up to the point where he becomes the Lizard. After that, it begins to feel a lot like last year's "Green Lantern", where none of the characters use their heads.

Yes, sir, I'm sorry to tell you, but a scientist who believes mutating the population of Manhattan into giant lizards is a good idea.... is quite insane.

Now the big problem that just about everyone is capable of understanding, is that Spider-man has a LOT of villains who are dark reflections of himself - scientists who are corrupted by whatever, and turn science - things that humanity could really benefit from, into something twisted and self-serving.

It should be understood that Doc Ock, the Green Goblin, and the Lizard... are all going to share that similarity. The trouble is, how do you do that three times and keep it entertaining? How do you keep it fresh and creative? And if you can't, then why bother?

What would *I* have done differently, since I'm such a knowledgeable and experienced writer capable of producing only the very best?

Can't say, don't care.

@GoILL I KNOW TDKR is criticized on this site, but there are FAR more blind followers that claim it's one of the greatest movies/CBM's ever. That's what I'm sayin. I felt this movie was far better, more coherent, and enjoyable than TDKR, yet it gets entirely too much unwarranted hate.

If it makes you feel any better, my sister and I ranted about TDKR all the way home from Downtown Tampa in a severe lightning storm, making the drive last over an hour.... (nearly got into a car wreck because I wasn't paying attention)

...and probably decided to stop ranting about it after about a week. Of the two, I see a lot of wasted potential, but moreso in TDKR, mostly because I liked the actors and characters more.

That is true but that has also been done for every cbm released in 2012 so far. I personally liked all the movies so far but I wouldn't say any of the three were best movie or cbm ever.

In this movie, the Lizard was just a weaker Green Goblin. There was absoulutly nothing, in the Amazing Spider-Man, that helped make the Lizard more interesting than Green Goblin, from the original movie.

Who gives an f about box office ratings. Everyone has their own opinion on all of these films and just because you like/don't like it doesn't make you right. It just means you have an opinion. We're all different and won't agree on things, but as long as you liked the film, WHO CARES!

For those that hated this movie, no one put a gun to your head and forced you to sit through and watch it.

By the way, if you diss on any movie, I dare you to write a better screenplay and share it with all of us. Can't talk s**** unless you prove you can do better.

Actually, there were scenes with Martha and Billy in the script, they were filmed, but cutted off, just like the entire "Untold Soty" of it.

He's a giant 9 foot Lizard-Man what did you expect him not to look cartoony and childish?

I felt The Lizard is the best adapted Spider-Man villain. He had a little bit more depth than Doc Ock but not as interesting as Green Goblin. Plain and simple. You can't expect a whole lot from a giant humaniod lizard. He looked good. I was more into the movie when he was on screen as both The Lizard and Dr.Connors more so than past Spider-Man villains and it has nothing to do with me being biased. They based the look off of the Steve Ditko version and they did great. A giant lizard wearing pants and a coat all the time would've look bad, that's why he only wore the lab coat a couple times and never had pants on as The Lizard. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is hopefully better because of more opportunities because they could bring in Black Cat, Shocker, reintroduce Green Goblin, reintroduce Venom (obviously not in the second, maybe in the third), bring in Chameleon, Scorpion. A whole lot of options. All I gotta say now is that this new series of movies goes as far as a trilogy because 6 movies will be too much.

Love this movie, BUT, the more I think about it the more I came to see how strange it was at how strong the Lizard was against Spidey, way too strong. They're supposed to be at equal strength. There's no way Spidey should be walking away from a Lizard battle by the skin of his teeth. And what was up with Parker running away from street thugs? I'm a huge fan, but those two issues still puzzle me

@Lizard: I agree, though I don't think Venom should be done again. Sony has proven that they don't have the brain power to do Venom justice on film.
