AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Director Marc Webb On Comic Book Inspiration And Retelling The Origin Story

Talking to Popcorn Biz, director Marc Webb has once again talked in detail about his take on Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man. While some fans have been a little upset at the changes made, especially in regards to the character's origin and attitude. Well, it turns out that the director has gone all the way back to an early Stan Lee/Steve Ditko comic book for inspiration (hardly a surprise considering the fact that the look of the Lizard is also inspired by the early designs). Be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page in order to read even more of the director and star Emma Stone's comments about the upcoming reboot.

[It's] been really fun. I think there's a real genuine sense of enthusiasm, and curiosity, which is fun. I mean, you do have to honor the sort of iconographic elements of 'Spider-Man,' but it's been fun to put ourselves in, in a different and new way. Well, I think there are elements of Spider-Man that are just universal. I mean, he shoots webs and he soars through the sky and he's a little guy who beats up guys that are bigger than him, or fights for the little guy. I think that's a really important thing, but I think that for me there were a few things in the Spider-Man comics that I thought were really interesting. There's this story about Peter's parents and where he came from, and I thought that it was really interesting to explore the emotional consequence of someone who's parents had left them at a very young age."

"I like that Peter Parker has a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. In 'The Amazing Spider-Man #8' there's this moment where Flash (Thompson) and Peter are sort of going at each other. They're at a boxing match and you sort of hear what Peter is saying and he's a little surly and I like that, but there's this attitude, this sort of punk rock humor and trickster quality that I think probably comes from somebody who is a little distrustful of the world at times. In order for someone like that to become a hero, I think it's a really interesting story and that was something fun. It was really fun to explore, and then of course there's the Gwen Stacy saga, The Lizard. But I think what we tried to do was find something very emotionally grounded and that felt very real. That's a challenge when there's big lizards and soaring through the air, but that's what was really fun about it."

"Well, we're telling the story in a different way and I think it's really important when you're redefining a character for the audience to experience things that they haven't experienced from the ground up. I wanted to build a character. There's just something about the movies that I see, like, I feel like point of view is a really crucial thing in the story and that you need to build up the sort of emotional building blocks so that you can experience all the other emotions in a very specific way rather than just experience it in an intellectual way. I mean, that's why at the beginning of the movie there's a story of his parents. I think you want to feel what that sense of abandonment feels like as an audience member so that you can readily and appropriately identify. And we're creating a different universe with different rules and a different tone and different villains. We're very careful to honor the iconography of 'Spider-Man,' but we wanted to tell it in a new and different way."

I can assure you all, that this will be THE Spiderman film of our generation with more to come, including the game and a potential trilogy. Can't wait. Haven't watched any of the other Spiderman films since hearing about this one by the way. Probably because I know this one is going to blow the others away. Basically this is going to be the First Class of 2012, only better, in my opinion.

OK, for one i think the only wise crack that Toby made was to Mach Man in the WHOLE TRILOGY. 2- they got the web shooters, 3 they got Gwen Stacey, 4 Peter did get his powers prior to Ben dying, 5 this can lead in to the whole parents being soviet spies which is awesome, plus can possilby come back as Chameleon clones. All and all this nails the actual spiderman story WAY more than Raimi's version.

Why did they have to make the suit look like it was made from a basketball? Even if the story is great I will keep looking at the suit and saying WTF?

This film is being overshadowed by the others. I do think that this film will be great! The moment I heard who was cast I knew it was going to be good. In my opinion I think it will be better than The Avengers. We have yet to find out since neither one is out.

I dont see why people are so damn fixated on the visuals...if that is the most important thing to you then you must be one of those people who just look at the pictures and dont actualy read the text
"oh this suit sucks this movie will be shit"

really? grow up, we already had a franchise with a great suit, be happy with that, dont put down this new one just because it isnt the exact same, this isnt Spider-man 4, it needed a new look so people wont confuse it for that, I think this movie is going to kick ass honestly,

Man this movie is gonna be great. I love the new suit, it kind of reminds me of 2099. And any villain is better than Raimi's Vulture and Vultress idea

It seemed like Sam Raimi's Spider-man was kind of old fashoned, A kiddy Camp trip that got really old, really fast.. I mean com'mon , how many times does he have to save this chick mary jane, that.. ooooh I gotta save Mary Jane at the end of this movie cliche shit, now don't get me wrong they were entertaining at best, especially the dark themes they played with in 3 (which I apparently enjoyed more than most fanboys) but this Sam Raimi spider-man.. with his constant Mary Jane mongering, underpowered intellegence, redundant themes got really anoying.

So thank you for this Sony (even though I would prefer for the rights to this shit to revert back to Marvel)
Mark webb has this new vision for a slightly cooler Peter Parker, thats more realistic, and a bit darker
(mostly night scenes shown in trailer)and... Webb Shooters!

so some of you would be happy with a great story and dailogue even if spiderman was in a giant spalding basketball wit really shitty cg1 and wire work

um ok .. (morons)

not sayin thats gonna happen

i hope this movie is good but the suit sucks and lizard looks retarded i dont see why hollywood cant get bot hstory and design right

is that too much to ask ?

I just want to clarify that I don't like the suit, but I don't hate the suit. I know what is going to happen. I'm going to get sucked into the story and the moment I see him wearing it on screen its going to take me out of the story. I didn't like James Acheson version at first with the raised webbing, but they explained that it helped with the filming. Just not sure how this new look is going to help with anything.

@Ha1frican

I've got to disagree Tobey was never fat as Spider-Man, he actually looked more like the original, and the original Spider-Man as never wiry or lanky
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 3/28/2012, 7:59 AM
@breakUbatman in the firs he was more likethe original. In 2 and 3 uou see howw short and stocky he really is. But, anyway spidey over the past few decades HAS become skinny and lanky. Batman was'nt a frickin ninja initially but over time he has changed into something else and so has Spidey

@ thewolfx:
If the CGI is an absolute disaster, I will be disappointed. The suit doesn't bother me, I suspect they'll spend a decent amount of time explaining how he got it or made it, considering that it would fit in with the [allegedly] more grounded interpretation.

However, if the story is fantastic and if the characters are done justice, I'll still like the movie over all. The wire work in the trailer looks so-so. I'm not too impressed with it, but there are a lot of people who've seen the extended sneak peak footage, and most of the online feedback has been praise for the way that Spidey has been brought to life. So, I'm thinking the wire work is better than it appears in the trailer.
