Sony Pictures gave us our first look at their animated foray into the Spider-Man universe this past weekend with the first trailer for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Not only will the film be the cinematic debut for Miles Morales, but the trailer gave us plenty of details about the film's unique style and plot, along with plenty of comic references. A Comic-Book Inspired Style

In a few blink-and-you'll-miss-them shots, the trailer gave us a look at the film's unique art style, which appears to be a blend of 3D animation with a stop motion feel and a noticable comic book flair. A few quick shots show some really flashy, comic book-esque panels that are integrates into flowing action scenes. During the 2017 CCXP writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller said that this is intentional, having the CGI animation treated with “line work and painting and dots and all sorts of comic book techniques.” Special thanks go out to Collider for that little tidbit! It's probably safe to say that this might be the most unqiue Spider-Man film we've ever received!

The Prowler Is The Film's Villain

Sticking true to the comics, the film appears to be making the Prowler the villain of the story. Miles' Uncle Aaron was always confirmed to be in the film (played by Mahershala Ali), we didn't know for certain if he'd be suiting up as the thieving villain as he did in the comics. The character also recently appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, played by Donald Glover, though this film will remain unconnected to that version.

More Than One Costume

While he's best known for a slick rblack-and-red costume, Miles' very first comic appearance featured the young hero in a homemade knockoff of Peter Parker's original red-and-blue outfit. The film pays tribute to that look, with one of the final shots of the trailer showing Miles wearing a form of the homemade suit. In all likelihood, the film will explore Miles' origin in great detail.

Peter Parker Is Dead...

When Miles was first introduced in the Ultimate line of comics, it was Peter Parker's death that inspired him to take up the mantle of Spider-Man, and it seems that the film will be using the tragic backstory in some capacity.

While we don't see Parker's full name on the gravestone, it's hard to imagine that the initials could be anyone else. The grave also puts Peter's age at 27 when he died, which also happens to be the same age Peter will be in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man video game next year. Coincidence? Maybe...

...Or Is He?

Despite the death of Peter, it seems another version of the original webslinger will make an appearance, or so the final shot of the trailer would have us believe. Given the title of the film, it seems likely that SOME alternate version of Peter Parker would mentor Miles, paying tribute to Brian Michael Bendis and Sarah Pichelli's Spider-Men comic book. Lord and Miller have revealed that a middle-aged Peter will play a role in the film; is this who Liev Shrieber will portray?
