As expected, Sony Pictures didn't officially release any new footage from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse last night but a new trailer can't be that far away and we have plenty of fresh details to keep us going in the meantime. Below, you'll find an in-depth breakdown of the footage that was shown off at Comic-Con along with an analysis of what it tells us about what exactly to expect from the movie.
That's not all, though, as we also have highlights from the movie's panel and a Q&A session which saw the animated feature's cast and crew shed plenty of light on where characters like Spider-Man, Miles Morales, and Spider-Gwen will be going (you can even watch a video of that). So, to take a look at these new details about Into the Spider-Verse, all you have to do is click on the "View List" button.
Miles Morales Meets Gwen Stacy
The footage kicked off with Miles Morales attempting to get used to his powers and it's not going particularly well! His clothes don't fit, he can't concentrate, and his hands keep sticking to things!
Among those is his new classmate Gwen's hair and a school nurse ultimately has to cut some of it off in order to free Miles (which explains the character's unique appearance in the movie). Next, Miles - who has just seen a newscast about the recent death of Spider-Man - pays a visit to Peter Parker's grave...
Heroes On The Run
A fan of Spider-Man's and clearly confused by his newfound abilities, Miles is standing at the hero's memorial when he's suddenly approached by a shadowy figure in a trench coat who sets his Spider-Sense blaring. It's Peter and before the youngster can even question what's happening, the wall-crawler fires a blast of webbing at him and they're entangled just as the police arrive on the scene.
From there, it's a mad dash to escape and in what sounds like a thrilling sequence (in which the police describe this dynamic duo as "a boy dressed as Spider-Man and what looks like a homeless corpse), they manage to escape. Unfortunately, Peter whacks his head on a passing car and Miles kidnaps him.
Spider-Gwen Joins The Party
When Peter comes to, he's strapped to a heavy bag and bombarded with questions by Miles. Despite being distrustful of the older wall-crawler, he's excited at the prospect of being trained by the actual Spider-Man but Peter just doesn't seem that interested. However, the footage then cuts to them stealing something from a lab before Spider-Gwen arrives and drops a pretty massive bombshell!
Welcome To The Spider-Verse
Confirming that she's from another dimension, Spider-Gwen takes the heroes to a base of some sort where they're introduced to even more Spider-Men. In this footage, we see (John Mulaney), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage) but there will no doubt be even more variations that than as it's made abundantly clear that Miles' dimension is far from the only one.
So far, those who saw this trailer/sizzle reel have had nothing but good things to say about Into the Spider-Verse and it definitely sounds like the movie is going to be even more ambitious than most of us initially imagined. Now, let's break down what exactly happened during the movie's Comic-Con panel...
Why Miles Morales Is The Movie's Lead
"We love Miles Morales," producer Phil Lord explained. "When Sony came to us and said we want to do an animated Spider-Man movie, 'We said, 'We'll do it but it has to be Miles.'' And then we got carried away in a groove from there. He's just an inspiring character. The whole idea is how to tell this story in a refreshing way...how to put a good spin on it. Miles is a good start," he teased.
A Drastic New Take On Peter Parker
Star Jake Johnson was asked what makes his Spider-Man different to other iterations we've seen and it definitely sounds like we're getting a very different take on the wall-crawler we're used to. "It's Peter Parker at 40 and it's a Peter Parker with a bad back and a Peter Parker who is not sure he wants to be Spider-Man," the actor explained in Hall H before jokingly adding: "It's chubby Peter Parker!"
"Miles needs him to be a mentor but he doesn't see himself as a mentor," Johnson added. "He sees something special in this guy and it reminds him of what's important about having these powers."
Why Hailee Steinfeld Is Excited To Play Spider-Gwen
Bumblebee star Hailee Steinfeld voices Spider-Gwen in Into the Spider-Verse and she had nothing but good things to say about the hero. "The fact that she is really just the toughest and the coolest and the smartest and the most capable one in the room and she knows it, there's something really incredible about her. She's got so much to her and it was really fantastic playing a character like her."
How Big Is The Spider-Verse?
"Miles story takes place in an alternate dimension to our own," Lord confirmed before teasing the massive scale of this Spider-Verse. "The thought of this movie was what if those different stories intersected. What would it do? How would it shake them up if these people met? I think that's the power of this character. We told this character's story so many different ways." It's going to be a lot of fun seeing just how many surprises this movie delivers because there will clearly be a lot of them...
