Major New Details Revealed About Sony's SPIDER-MAN UNIVERSE Revealed By Studio Insiders And More

Sony's plans for the Spider-Man Universe are something of a mystery to us but a new report from Vulture finally sheds at least a little light on what the studio actually has planned for these characters...

Sony has big plans for a Spider-Man Universe with Venom set to be released this fall and Silver & Black and Morbius the Living Vampire both in various stages of development. Now, Vulture has run a story attempting to shed some light on what exactly we should expect and it makes for interesting reading.

"At the core of the
endeavor to make a universe lies a deep cynicism," one writer with experience of working with a failed cinematic universe explains. "The audience thinks you’re just trying to take their money. It’s not unfounded. You have to prove them wrong. And Marvel has set a high bar."

The site didn't have any luck interviewing Sony bosses Sanford Panitch and Palak Patel but Venom producer Avi Arad did have this to say about how things are coming together with that. "This is an origin story and we have to try and make it the beginning of a long journey," he explains. "Kids love Venom. It’s something about it that attracts the anti-hero sensibility. So we are very excited."

As for Silver & Black, the movie - which revolves around Silver Sable and Black Cat - is described as having a comedic tone inspired by Thelma & Louise and Midnight Run. Writer and director Emily Carmichael met with Sony about the project and has nothing but good things to say about their plans. "I was one of the directors called in to pitch on Silver & Black," she reveals. "At one of my early meetings on the project I got a peek at the phonebook-sized compendium of characters Sony has the rights to, all characters tangentially related to Spider-Man. It’s a cinematic universe, all right."

Comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis recently signed with DC Comics and is now in charge of Superman. However, he's had a number of meetings with Sony and while he wouldn't reveal their plans, he's optimistic about the Spider-Verse's chances of success. "I happen to have heard some of the plans that have not been made public. You’re asking if they’re cool? I thought they were very cool. Fans wouldn’t be annoyed with what they’re doing." What might that mean? We'll see...

EVERY1 is trying to make money! But the idea sounds interesting. I bet Silk, Spider Gwen/Woman and 2099 are in the mix. They have my money if those happen.

@mastakilla39 - I hope your money is all they get.

I want the MCU'S take on Spider-Man and nothing else.

@Starscream24 - Spider-Man is over-saturated. We already have 8 films he's appeared in. I want other Spider-Men and related characters to be adapted. Homecoming is already struggling to be fresh by having to include minor details to be "different". Like only true fans will know that Liz is 1 of Peter's early girlfriends from the comics.

MCU's Spider-Man is too "uncertain and vague". There is no definitive Uncle Ben, Osborne, or love interest. His role model is Iron Man instead of Uncle Ben? Homecoming felt like the 1st episode of a slow burn tv show because Sony/Marvel has no idea what to do with him except that he has be seen with the Avengers. It feels like there is no goal for this iteration and Sony/Marvel are only making Spider-Man films because it sells regardless.

@mastakilla39 - Oh, give me a break. Homecoming is the second-best Spider-Man solo movie, only runner-up to the first Spider-Man 2.

But this stupid-assed Spider-Verse with no Spider-Man is just another harebrained studio box office flop formula.

@bropous - You seriously think Homecoming was the 2nd best SM film? Homecoming has no foundation for an origin or set-up for a trilogy. Only thing Homecoming established is that SpiderMan has no future without the Avengers and that is [frick]ing sad. SpiderMan is the crown jewel and face of Marvel. He does not need the avengers to sell a film.

Raimi's trilogy established all his morals, supporting characters, and relationships perfectly. Each film had a theme relative to Spider-Man too: 1 is about responsibility, 2 is sacrifice, and 3 is forgiveness. Homecoming did nothing innovative and left so much open for interpretation. Homecoming only proves that Spider-Man has more villains to adapt.

The film was "okay", biggest problem I had is it felt like a the 1st episode for a tv show that can go on forever.

@mastakilla39 -

*Spoiler Alert*

If you watched Homecoming until the end you’ll see Peter realized he DOESN’T Need to be an Avenger.

@mastakilla39 - Spider-Man is pretty much overdone. Marvel Studios made the smart move by not retreading old ground with yet ANOTHER origin story. All Peter needed to do was reference what happened a time or two and that was all that was necessary. And, we got some GREAT team-up action. The shot of Spidey and Shell-Head flying low over the streets of Queens was just jizz-worthy.

To each his own. I loved it, you thought it was "meh". Yet the Sun will still appear over the eastern limb of our planet.

@Trimount - *SPOILER* "I'd rather just stay on the ground for a little WHILE. Friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Somebody's got to look out for the little guy, right?"

―Peter Parker

If you paid attention, he says "for a little while" meaning MCU's goal is to make him an avenger. Even though Amy Pascal's goal sounds different?

@mastakilla39 - yup loved the scene...I’m commenting on a movie and not the studio’s plans moving forward. He doesn’t need to be an Avenger. Very nice way to wrap up the movie.

@mastakilla39 - But would Spider-man 2099 be as interesting without the other 2099 characters? I loved when one of the Church of Thor characters crossed path with Spider-man. It was hilarious.

So they're building a Spider-Man cinematic universe........without Spider-Man? Good luck with that Sony.
