TotalFilm caught up with Martin Sheen, who is starring in Marc Webb's upcoming movie 'The Amazing Spider-Man', in their latest issue of their magazine, and they've been kind enough to give us a preview of their interview with him where he goes on to talk about his thoughts on Andrew Garfield, and how much he really knew about Spider-Man before he signed on.

On how familiar he was beforehand with the Spider-Man comics:
"To be honest with you, I hadn't any clue about Spider-Man."

"I was on a plane one time, a couple of years ago, and the guy next to me was watching the film [Spider-Man 2] and I was just looking at it, without the earphones thinking, 'I don't have a clue.'

"I'd never read the comic books. But I adore Tobey Maguire and he was up against this guy who had these chains coming out of his back [Dr Octopus].

"I didn't know who Uncle Ben was, though Cliff Robertson played the part. I knew that."

And his thoughts on Andrew Garfield:
"He's quite the marvel, a very fine actor. He's a lovely guy, very disciplined, very focused.

"He called me up and said, 'This is Andrew Garfield' and I said, 'Who?' and he said, 'Uh, we're in the movie together...' and I said, 'Yeah, what part do you play?' and he said, 'Uh, I play your nephew!' I liked him instantly.

"We had a wonderful lunch and laughed and joked and he said, "Just feel free to bring whatever you like" and I said, "absolutely." The guy who's directing takes a beating because his last name is Webb! But he's lovely."

And lastly, they asked him how Garfield was managing with the physical aspect of filming and what he's like on screen:
"He's very athletic, he's in great shape. He plays basketball and he works out every day. He's fit. Very wiry, thin, tall, very physically focused.

"He works in a very organic way - he loves accidents, when something happens in a scene that causes him to do something else. I went through a couple of very emotional scenes and he was right there, focused.
And he was the same off camera. He didn't slack off. No, sir! He was equally emotional off camera. Very impressive. He's going to be a huge star."

The full interview with Martin Sheen is available in this months issue of TotalFilm which will be out March 17th.

'The Amazing Spider-Man' swings into theaters July 4th 2012.

Angelus article came out a while before this? How come editors articles get on the front page automatic while non-editors doesn't and even though they've made the same article?

I've no doubt he'll be good in Spider-Man aswell!

"We had a wonderful lunch and laughed and joked and he said, "Just feel free to bring whatever you like" and I said, "absolutely."

Oh wow, how generous of Andrew Garfield to allow Martin Sheen that kind of freedom.

He said Garfield was a "Marvel" mmhmhmhmhmhm :> cute.

Anyway, still not 100% on the reboot, I loved the Raimi trilogy and wanted that to keep going, but that's never gonna happen and the reboot has it's positives and negatives IMO, one thing I'm not looking forward too, Sally Field as aunt may :/ have to sit through her talking for a good chunk of time.

Yo Longstar you serious or are you pulling everyone's leg; because if you do...that's pretty awesome! And come on seriously, this Guy has "Never" I repeat "NEVER" Seen or heard" of the Web-Head in his life? What?! And Sony think's this was a smart decision?

Wow come on, even before doing a roll, you at lesat have to know something about the chracter's orgion, like: Where he or she grew up, how they got their powers...if they have power's? You know something in that line. But come on, Seriously, it's like saying, "Nobody's heard of the Power Rangers? And Yes, I did say, "The Power Ranger's. Why, becasue out of all the Power Rangers... the "Green Ranger" Tommy Oliver, was a A.B.A.M.F. witch means in my dictornary: A BadAss 'Mo [frick]er.

Every kid, hell everyone person, grew up with these chracters; even our parent's did. So he's going to tell us, that he's "never" 'heard' or have 'seen' soemthing containing to Spider-Man or Peter Parker? All I've got to say is, "Wow" and I mean that, jsut wow.

Oh and if we get a chance to vote for Carnage in the reboot, witch I'm still totaly against, I vote the one and only wait for it ladies and gentlemen: Charley Sheen. lol.

Justice - 3/14/2011, 6:06 PM
He doesn't even know the correct name for the villian. Ha-ha. It's: Doctor Octopus or Doctor Octavis or if you want to get short, lol; it's: "Doc Ock", like that came up with that all by myself. All these villians are going to have a name now. How do you like it?" he says. "Genius, sir." Hoffman responds.
