Sony Pictures Is Reportedly Building Towards A SINISTER SIX Movie Once Again

At one point, Sony Pictures was developing a Sinister Six project. Now, it seems the studio is once again working toward crafting a film based around Spider-Man's deadliest villains.

Once upon a time, Sony was working on a Sinister Six film that would have existed in the universe set up by The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. The project was so far in development that it even had Drew Goddard attached as its writer and director, but it ultimately fell apart and Spider-Man made his way into the MCU. Still, fans remained hopeful that the Web-Slinger's villains would come together for a solo film centered around them at some point.

Well, according to a new piece of information, Sony may once again be working toward bringing the Sinister Six to the big screen.

Before you proceed, this tidbit includes potential spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

During Deadline's latest Hero Nation podcast, host Anthony D'Alessandro offered two interesting tidbits about Sony's Spider-Man franchise: Firstly, Venom is reportedly expected to connect to the MCU version of Spider-Man. Secondly, Sony is said to be hoping to get a new Sinister Six film off the ground.

Of course, it's important to take this with a grain of salt until we get some more solid details. Having said that, the information shared in the podcast does make sense. For starters, recent reported leaks have pointed to Venom: Let There Be Carnage tying into the MCU Spider-Man series, and No Way Home is expected to feature an incarnation of the Sinister Six.

In a 2018 Vanity Fair profile focused on Sony's superhero universe, Spider-Man-franchise producer Amy Pascal revealed that Sinister Six was not dead, and even expressed interest in Drew Goddard returning as director for the film. Then, in a Spider-Man: Far From Home featurette from 2019 shared on Reddit, Pascal teased the eventual formation of the Sinister Six with the villains that had been introduced in the, at the time, two-film Spider-Man franchise.

Funnily enough, Andrew Garfield himself recently discussed the now-defunct Sinister Six during an interview with Collider, revealing that he had been involved in meetings about the project and also expressed his excitement over Goddard's vision for it:

"I don't know how close [the movie] got, but I definitely had a few meetings, and it was really exciting [...] I love Drew so much, and I love 'Cabin in the Woods,' and the other stuff that he's made. We just got on like a house on fire. And I loved his vision, he's so unique and odd and [...] off-kilter and unconventional in his creative choices. So, yeah, that was definitely a fun couple of months."

It's still too early to realistically picture what a potential Sinister Six movie would look like, but we'll hopefully get a better idea of what could be when Spider-Man: No Way Home is released.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe will continue with Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which hits theaters on October 1, 2021. That will be followed by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which swings onto the big screen on December 17, 2021.

@Nerdman3000 - I hate that guy! While he has done some good things, the majority has ruined! I barfed when Kojima partnered with him for MGSV resulting in Sutherland being cast as Snake.

I can't understand how can Sony be so good in the video game department but so stupid in the movie department, specially comic book movies. They have the Spider-Man franchise and could do so many things with it, but they are just stuck in the 2000s

By this time, they should be competing with the MCU with they own spider-verse, but they only want to do Sinister Six no matter what. the worst part, is that it could've come in naturally, if they had focused in other stories.

Only way this would work is if their spidermanless spiderman universe got a lot better and put venom and morbius up against the villains from their movies

Hopefully Drew Goddard is still attached, he was supposed to direct a version of it during Sony's Amazing Spiderman run.

That wouldn't stop Sony executives and Avi Arad from blocking all of his creative decisions and forcing him to insert a bunch of useless subplots. This already happened with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (which was NOT Marc Webb's movie) and it happened to a lesser extent when Arad forced Sam Raimi to cram Venom into Spider-Man 3.

Sony really is the movie studio equivalent of that alcoholic who loses his job and beats his wife and kids until they leave him, but then he talks them into coming back by promising "I'm sorry, I've quit drinking, I got a new job, I can change", so they come back.... and he does the exact same shit again.

Rinse, wash, repeat.

@MUTO123 - Marvel is that friend that tries to help them, gets them the new job etc

But it's only ever a matter of time before they screw up again and ruin everything

Literally the only reason the Sinister Six exists is to kill Spider-Man. They are not some random villainous group robbing banks, doing mercenary work, or the government's bidding like the Suicide Squad. They have only ONE REASON for existing and it's Spider-Man.

What is Sony smoking?

This isn't surprising (to me) in the least, and I assumed this is where they were heading after all of the "hinted at" villains in the next Spidey film. I don't really see this as news.

@LSHF - Yeah I think this is basically the whole point of the entire Multiverse thing they’re doing with Spider-Man 3. They had to do this so they could keep using Spider-Man and let Sony have their stupid spider verse.

I already hate No Way Home for rushing the Sinister Six with the multiverse cr*p and for giving Sony the chance to connect their terrible current Spidersonyverse movies to the MCU.
Spiderfan2226
Spiderfan2226 - 9/24/2021, 9:39 PM
@SethBullock - Yeah I’m expecting to do a whole lot of Eyerolling when I see the movie. But I think the trade-off is getting to keep Spider-Man in the MCU. If they didn’t give so many of us who knows if they would let horrible studios keep Spidey. And without Iron Man or Captain America and thor and hulk being whatever they are now, they need Spider-Man more than ever

@Spiderfan2226 - sorry I should have proof read after using voice to text:

‘If marvel studios didn’t give Sony this than who knows if they would have let marvel studios keep spidey’.

Pretty funny typo for marvel lol

Soon, children. Soon the nightmare will steal the flesh and marrow of the innocent and be born to cleanse the unclean. Soon the streets will run red with the blood of the unbelievers. Soon. Soon the Aunt May movie will be reality. Hail Mephisto.
