SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME plummets 84%; the biggest drop for a comic book film on record.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is breaking all the records, but this is one record Sony was hoping not to achieve. The biggest drop (from opening Friday to 2nd Friday) for a comic book movie.

In 2016, WB's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice dropped roughly 81.3% from the opening Friday to the 2nd Friday, becoming the record breaking 2nd week drop for any comic book film feature. However, this record, that Warner Bros. held for 5 years has now been shattered by a Marvel superhero, Spider-Man.

While the differences can be taken into account, Spider-Man's 2nd Friday was Christmas Eve, along with a pandemic sweeping the nation once again. But the Marvel/Sony masterpiece was the one to defeat the all time record drop.

Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed an outstanding $121 million last Friday, but in its second Friday, box office mojo are reporting a $19.65 million Friday. Down 83.9% (a 2.6% bigger drop than Batman v Superman, the previous record holder.) While taking into account the drop, Spider-Man has already outgrossed the entire run of BvS in a week, and pretty much any movie from under the DC Extended Universe film banner.

However, the drop was to be expected and the Saturday and Sunday that followed performed better than expected. Saturday's Christmas Day gross was well over $31 million (at $31.7 million, up 61.3% from Friday and down 57.1% from the previous Saturday) and Sunday is predicting a very strong $30 million ($30.1M; down just 5% from Saturday and 53.1% from the previous Sunday).

Marvel / Sony and Spider-Man finding an extra $3 million or so for their Friday to gross and let WB keep the record for the biggest drop for a comic book film remains to be seen.

Honestly who cares which movie holds this “record”. No Way Home is a commercial and critical success while BvS is the exact opposite

So, most everyone that wanted to see it one or more times already have. That's a good thing. Many people feel they took chances (of getting sick) by seeing this, and they saw it. Why risk it again?

Probably mostly because of Covid. The high opening weekend was in SPITE of Covid more than anything else (the brand recognition of Spider-Man is too powerful). Now that everyone who absolutely needs to see it in the theatre is seeing it, the box office is going to drop even more than it usually would.

Imagine finding out that your negative record was broken by a movie that made a bill.

Off topic (Marvel's Netflix The Punisher);

For some reason, Marvel Entertainment posted this video a couple of weeks ago:

Sony ain't worried, first billion dollar film in a year just means that most people have seen it by now.

I don't think Sony even care. Especially since this movie is looking at a 1.3 maybe 1.5 billion worldwide total.

This is the least saddest "Oh, no!" box office news ever.

I mean, obviously. The movie was so successfull because everyone wanted to see it and see it as early as possible. Now that everyone did, ticket sales are going down. That's really not that weird.

Once you hit a billion, no drop in box office is a big deal

The hype for this thing was incredible. Just before the movie's release, the fever pitch was palpable. The Tobey, Andrew, Charlie anticipation was off the fricking charts!

People were dying for any glimpse of them. If the whole movie had been a 10 minute reveal of these characters, I might still have made a billion!

The hype wouldn't have worked so well if Marvel Studios hadn't kept things so quiet on the official front. It's a testament to their secrecy that we were all drooling lunatics for the movie, moreso even than our actual desire to see the actors reprise their roles in the MCU. Sure we wanted it, but all that foreplay made us so wet that we just NEEDED it.

Hype maketh money.

But the drop? I dunno, Christmas Eve. Does anyone go to the cinema on Christmas Eve? I never do. I probably never would. Does any movie ever make as much as NWH did on Christmas Eve? I'll bet they don't. I'll bet it actually holds some kind of record for this day of the year.

Or it could be indicative of people going cold on the movie. There are a couple of reasons this could be the case. One is that, all the hype and excitement aside, it's not particularly well-written or well-directed. Which leads to (and can be taken in conjuction with) the second reason; All the Oscar hype may be detrimental. It forces people to judge the film by a higher standard, one that the film cannot live up to (although I personally feel the movie has some truly excellent performances, especially Tom Holland in that Aunt May scene). When thought of in an awards context, suddenly the film becomes ridiculous and all of it's flaws are highlighted.
This could be the cause, if there is one, but I don't think there is a cause other than Christmas Eve. You can't expect people to give up their Christmas Eves by going to the Cinema.

Could make the excuse it's Christmas falling on the weekend, Covid, or a combination of those two, but I think a drop was always to be expected after an opening like that

Is this just a one-to-one comparison of opening night vs Christmas eve? If so this is a ridiculous stat.

@WarMonkey - It opening night + Thursday preview vs Christmas eve

Wow you're comparing opening night which is always front-loaded thanks to previews, which was ridiculously high for this movie, with Christmas eve, which is probably the worst day of the year for movie box office

Congratulations 🤦🏽‍♂️
