When Sony Pictures announced plans for an El Muerto movie during last year's CinemaCon, the vast majority of fans were left scratching their heads. For starters, he's an incredibly obscure character and way down the list of Spider-Man-adjacent heroes and villains comic book readers want to see on screen.
Based on what we've heard, Sony gave popular rapper and aspiring actor Bad Bunny his pick of characters from their Spider-Man Universe and he decided to take a crack at bringing El Muerto to life. Given his love of pro wrestling, that's not overly surprising, especially as he's competed at WrestleMania for WWE.
Now, though, it's been confirmed that El Muerto has lost its January 12, 2024 release date.
While the project hasn't been outright cancelled, this doesn't bode well and suggests the movie is no longer a priority. 2024 still looks to be a busy year for Sony, however, as they'll release Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Madame Web, and Venom 3.
We're guessing this is one of those projects announced on a whim that, while not cancelled, is no longer a priority for any number of reasons. The fact Bad Bunny is so busy likely doesn't help matters and there was no way El Muerto was ever going to meet its planned release date.
While the character briefly tussled with Spider-Man in the squared circle, his main foe is El Dorado, a supernatural being who is responsible for granting his family these supernatural abilities.
Jonás Cuarón is supposed to be directing the movie based on a screenplay by Garreth Dunnet-Alcocer.
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
