John Malkovitch To Play The Vulture In Spider-Man 4 ...Anne Hathaway Confirmed?

Yes, it's Spidey 4 rumor time at CBM! But Movieline is claiming that their inside sources are accurate on this latest news.

This from Movieline:

"Movieline has confirmed with sources close to the film that Raimi’s sequel is circling John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway to play Spider-Man’s adversaries, and neither evildoer is quite what you might have expected.

If negotiations proceed according to plan, Malkovich will be playing Spider-Man’s nemesis the Vulture, who packs a punch despite his advanced age. The Vulture is able to fly through the air and brandish his sharp wings to attack Spider-Man."

As for Hathaway...

"The 27-year-old actress is currently the top choice for Felicia Hardy, who’d been long-rumored as one of the new characters in this installment. (Other names bandied about for the role included Julia Stiles, Rachel McAdams, and Romola Garai.) However, unlike in the comic books, this Felicia Hardy doesn’t transform into the Black Cat. Instead, Raimi’s Felicia will become a brand-new superpowered figure called the Vulturess."

I know, sounds like a load of Schumaker doesn't it? They go on to say that the reason the character of The Lizard was dropped is "The suits simply can’t bring themselves to sign off on such an odd-looking enemy — instead, they’d rather closer to villains with a human face." This part I can believe. Since Dylan Baker is already confirmed to reprise the role of Curt Connors, again, sounds fishy.

What do you folks think?

Good find Ror!

I've got mixed feelings here.....I think John Malkovich is awesome, and seeing him as the Vulture would be pretty sweet.

It bothers me that they're talking about not using the Lizard though, he's a great Spidey villain!

And Felicia as Vulturess? mounted said it right, that IS a load of crap. If Felicia Hardy's in it & she doesn't become or at least gets set up to become the Black Cat, I'm done with Sam Raimi.

PS - Check out my Captain America article in Fan Fic! :)

Malkovitch could make the Vulture a little more interesting. I don't understand why they have to rape Felicias character. Just make her The Black Cat if you use her at all. If you want a new villainess, create a new character entirely. May as well make Tony Stark into The Hulk.

Tis. I can just about buy that Malkovitch will be The Vulture..but there is no way they would just decide to make Felicia Hardy his daughter and the Vulturess! Although, there has been rumors of the father/daughter villains before. Still, not swallowing this without some proof.

I hate the Vulture. I know he's a classic character and all but I just alays thought the idea of this little old man squaring off against Spider - Man seemed ridiculous.

I love John Malkovich, but even he couldn't make me want to see Vulture in a movie

You would think that Marvel would have some say so, on the total revamping of a character wouldn't you?

It would be pretty hypocritical of Malkovich to end up as the Vulture. I remember reading an article way back when the first Spiderman rolled around and he was rumored as playing the Green Goblin. He shot that rumor down, though, stating something along the lines of 'these types of movies being beneath him', essentially. Actually, here's a link: http://movies.ign.com/articles/034/034468p1.html

I think that a movie with Vulture would be ok (there are a lot of better choices - Electro or Scorpion for example) and Malkovitch is a decent choice to play the character but if Felicia Hardy isnt Black Cat and is insead "Vulturess" then I will not go and see this movie - I can cope with them making minor changes but that is one step too [frick]ing far!

I read that article, Pants.. I don't think he's dissing CBM's excactly. I think he just prefers highly artistic, edgy films with high drama so that he can really get into them.
Acting is an art and he is an artist. If what they are offering him doesn't in his view give him the chance to do his thing satisfactorily then he will probably reject it.

Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 12/8/2009, 8:07 AM
Pants: I followed your link and read the article. If you read the whole thing he goes on to say ( not in so many words) that these are not artistic movies, so in order to do them his price is alot higher and the studio wouldn't meet that price at the time. In other words, for the right amount he can overlook any artistic shortcomings the film may have. LOL

@ darth and hawks, clearly green is the artist's color of choice. He called CBM's business propositions. That's a slight, I don't care who you are. Technically, 99% of movies made are business props intended to make money for all involved, even your crappy art house pics. Dick wad.

Heh heh, I'm not surprised about the Lizard. He could never be the main villain in a movie; a Lizard cameo is more likely. He's just not "human" enough.

I'm not a big fan of Black Cat, but totally freaking up her character is just plain STUPID IMHO! Regardless, I think we'll see Felicia as the cat sometime in this movie or in the future.

As far as the Vulture goes... I'm not too excited about him as the main villain. He's just not that interesting. Prior to the movie's release, I just don't see him generating the kind of buzz Doc Oc, Venom, and Sandman were able to create.

I'm really hoping this is just some kind of deception on Raimi's part.

I think they're just trolling. After the failure that was Spiderman 3, Raimi realizes he lost the trust of the community. He's learned a lesson from hyping up the community and setting them up for disappointment.

I'll bet all of this is a clever distraction to keep us buzzing about the movie without any real clue as to what decisions have or have not been made.
