TRAILER BREAKDOWN: Why I'm Worried For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

TRAILER BREAKDOWN: Why I'm Worried For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

My human-sense is tingling! I’ve written about my excitement surrounding The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s trailer, but that’s only half of the story. It’s easy to be negative about every new CBM that pops up, but I have some legitimate concerns stemming from this trailer.

Editorial Opinion

Before I start, if you’re looking for a positive take on the trailer, check out Part One of my breakdown.

So that CGI, huh? I found it really trailblazing for them to intersperse footage from the upcoming video-game into the trailer. Seriously though, I know that it’s still a work in progress and they have plenty of time left, but geez, some of that stuff looked BAD, like Green Lantern bad. But the larger issue here is the over-reliance on CGI in the first place. It’s not as if they’re putting all of their eggs in one basket in terms of visuals, but if the CGI isn’t good in the finished product, that tends to detract from everything else.

As I mentioned in my previous editorial, Webb and co. seem to be at least aware of potential overcrowding, but that doesn’t preclude it from still happening. Despite their apparent efforts to avoid a horde of sub-plots, I’m counting three significant villains, a romantic element, a series of flashbacks, Peter’s relationship to Aunt May, a bunch of Sinister Six setup and that’s not even getting into the presence of Norman Osborn, Oscorp and everything going on over there. I can preface everything I say here with “I know it’s early, but” and I’m aware that I’m overanalyzing and getting worked up about potentially minor details, but that doesn’t mean that elements like these are not worrisome, especially considering what an issue this has been for the character in the past.

On the subject of all of those extra characters, we get an overt reference to Dr. Octopus as well as the introduction of a new Retardo-Goblin DeHaan Goblin. First off, seriously WTF is that? No mask, doesn’t really look like the Ultimate or 616 version, I don’t really know what to make of this Goblin. It's more than just how he looks though, he presents a broader problem, just as Ock does: the recycling of already well-done characters. In my head, Gobby and Ock from the Raimi series were two of the best characters, let alone villains, in the whole thing. So why are we re-doing them the first chance we get? I understand they’re some of the web-head’s most iconic baddies, but it’s not like he has a barren cupboard in terms of villains. Guys like Kraven, Mysterio, Chameleon, Carnage, Morlun, Kingpin (should I go on?) still haven’t been used and could all present new threats. And if they’re going to try to re-use anyone, uh, how about some redemption for Venom?

On a similar note, the film also looks like it’s recycling story beats from the Raimi series as well. My biggest complaint with the first film was that it felt largely unnecessary, touching a lot of the same bases that Spider-Man did. Yet, there’s two recurring problems he faced there that are re-surfacing here. The first: it’s a secret identity! Could we maybe go one film where the bad guy doesn’t figure out his identity? And there’s not even any mystery to it, in addition to their surveillance of him, the Osborns are pretty blatantly discussing that hey know who he is. The second issue: oh no, Peter’s love interest is in trouble again! Have the women in Peter’s life not been threatened enough already? Could Gwen inhabit a role other than simply being a damsel in distress? Well, judging by the trailer, no. If the heavily rumored death of Gwen Stacy does occur here, it may come across as lighter than they want it to be since Spider-Man’s girlfriend has had her life threatened in the climax of every movie he’s been in so far.

The good news is that the trailer didn't overwhelm me with concerns for the film, and there was still a lot to like. The bad news is that the issues it did raise have the potential be monumentally bad. I hope I'm wrong here and the film turns out to be great, but the first one didn't exactly inspire huge amounts of confidence.

You guys saw the trailer, what do you think? What’s got you worried? Am I being too pessimistic? Let me know in the comments.

I totally agree with ya. Based on the trailer i think the movie is already [frick]ed based on the fact that there are 3 villains. And all villains can't be compared with their comic book counterparts. So basicly the movie isn't made for the fans. but just for the money.
Sam Raimi's movies will still be my favourites even though i am a big spidey fan and the third movie wasn't real good

I think you're right with your concerns as a big Spider-Man fan I have concerns as well. No idea why these villains look so different from their comic book looks. Rhino as a metal robot suit actually doesn't bug me since I never dug Rhino in the first place, Electro looks pretty cool and I can see the similarities to the Ultimate comics but damn does Green Goblin look like poop on a stick. They really screwed this version of the Goblin. Can't wait to see the Bonus features and hear the reasons behind his crappy look haha!

This movie receives hate here just cause it's the popular thing to do on this site. One person says it looks like video game graphics and everyone jumps on the bandwagon to nitpick that flaw.

If you really want to compare CGI, please look at the Raimi films' swinging spidey shots. Nowadays that looks laughable whereas TASM did them so beautifully. I'm hoping they tweak the CGI between the next half a year to make it look amazing.

I saw the trailer in 3D before seeing Hobbit 2 and oh my lord it looked [frick]ing awesome. The CGI the swinging the action scenes, everything was epic.

Also, just because Spidey 3 had 3 villains does not mean that a spiderman movie can never have 3 villains again. It's been said time and time again that this will be Electros movie. Rhino will be a small initial threat and Harry as Gobby could just be the beginning to something larger. It's been said time and time again that this movie is setting up the groundwork for future movies. We're gonna get a lot of easter eggs and references. As long as Electro is a strong villain, the movie should be good.

TDK had so many villains but balanced them all VERY well.. so hopefully TASM2 can do the same

I put my pants on just like everybody else: I do a half-assed cartwheel into the pants, fall on the floor trying to put both legs in at once, I hop up and down while pulling them up, I zip them up with all of the caution and concentration of a bomb-disposal tech (so that I don't catch my dick in the zipper), and then do the "Thriller Dance" to make sure that they're on right.

I'm of the firm belief of not judging a movie (which includes story & acting) until I've watched said movie.

Trailers don't carry the weight a full movie does. While that statement is very obvious, people still judge a 2 hour movie based on a 2 minute preview.

The context, and order of scenes is always mixed up in a preview. Some scenes aren't even used (see the recent news on X-Men) and we have no idea the context of the actual plot or scene.

We can't get a sense of what the actors bring to the table in a trailer either, as each character might get a max of 30 seconds in a preview. So while we might be able to pick apart costumes/suits and possible CGI concerns.. this doesn't add up to enough information to be on either spectrum of judging a movie.

Either way you will hear "See.. I told you it would suck" or "See.. I told you it would be epic". There isn't much honesty on the internet.

Instead of getting worked up negatively, why not wait till the finished product, and appreciate the Super-hero movies while we have them.. Like anything, it won't last forever. Soon, the "market" will get over-kill on Super Hero movies.. so please, lets enjoy them while we can.

Oh.. and leave the judging till AFTER we watch the movie. Just my thoughts on this.

I honestly got serious Batman and Robin vibes from the trailer. I'm not trying to hate, I rather enjoyed the first for what it was...even though it hit a TON of notes that the Raimi film hit.

The CGI was laughably bad all over the place...which either means they have a crap load of work to do to finish it...or, more likely, that it's essentially "finished" and that's why they are using it in the trailer. You don't fill a trailer with a load of very unfinished shots, and if they did, they were dumb for doing so.

I'm a big fan of Garfield and Stone, but their dynamic in these movies is just awkward.

3 super-villains: Electro, Rhino, and Goblin
1 dark overlord: Norman Osborn
Harry has "I will become a villain in the 3rd act" written all over his face, he doesn't come off as a cool friend of Peter's, he immediately strikes you as a nefarious, creepy character
Set ups for the Sinister Six

That is a LOT to include, and I heavily doubt they will let this film be 3 hours. This isn't like The Avengers where virtually all of the characters get established in their own films before coming together. This one film has a LOT to cover within itself.

Not to mention that originally there was going to be a Mary Jane sub-plot, which would have been ridiculous.

But with all of that being said, the only saving grace for this movie would be if they DID happen to kill off Gwen, then at least the movie would pack a punch and carry more weight than one of these films typically does. But one amazing aspect won't be enough to counter everything else that might be wrong with the film.

In 2014, summer movie season starts early with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and doesn't truly get going until Godzilla comes out.

Also, for everyone saying 'don't judge by the trailer, wait until after you see the movie!' I hope you understand how ridiculous that statement is.

That is the whole damn point of trailers, to give us a preview of the film to judge and decide how good we think it works, the trailers are inherently meant to sell us on the idea of seeing a movie.

Magically it is 100% fine to say 'That trailer was great, and I think the film looks great' but when someone says 'Man, the trailer gives me some serious doubts about the movie' they get told to wait and see the actual movie.

We were just treated to 2.5 minutes of major plot points, dialogue, and action/big money shots from the film....that is enough for YOU to say it looks great, but not enough for others to express disappointment?

Ridiculous. I know what it's like to be a die-hard fan of something. You're getting a big movie based on something you like and you want it to be amazing, it's hard to remove yourself from it and judge objectively...but sometimes that's just what you have to do.

EdwardNashton, your ability to get inside my head is uncanny.

I get the anger of those who don't want to judge the film prematurely, but the points that Ed makes are sound; all of the arguments that he provides are based on what is suggested within the trailer.

Don't get me wrong, Spider Man is my favourite CB character, but TASM was a crushing disappointment. I don't want to see the same mistakes repeated.

I think that the fact that I love Spider-Man so much, makes me have really high expectations every time new movie come out. And except maybe for Spider-Man 2, no other Spidey movie lived up to these expectations. I just believe that a Spider-Man film can be way better than the ones we've seen until now. He has some great villains, I hope Rhino and Electro will look awesome but TASM2 could easily turn into Spider-Man 3. I hope it won't, after all in the TDK trilogy the movies had more than one villain and it worked out very well. I'm not losing my hope, even though I didn't like TASM.

Webb and co. are trying to do something NEVER BEFORE DONE in the Spidey universe and characters like Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus are key elements and it shouldn't be done without them. 3/4 of the villains that are used in this franchise haven't been used in the Raimi version and Kingpin isn't owned by Sony so how can they use him?

As for the "recycled story beats" Alot of comicbook movies use the damsel in distress and the villain figuring out who the hero really is lol it's not a Spider-man exclusive oh and one last thing, Gwen Stacy was never really in any real danger in the first one. Food for thought.

"he presents a broader problem, just as Ock does: the recycling of already well-done characters."

You left out the reference to the Vulture (his wings were also on display), but even still...I don't see what you present as a problem, as actually being one.

You're going into a recycled film, either way.
Spiderman himself is being recycled.
Just like Batman, and Superman have been.
Same for the love interests of Lois, and possibly soon Mary Jane.

Knowing that you are going into a reboot of a franchise, you'd have to expect that some aspects of the story to be repeated.

So far these were just 'references' to other popular Spiderman villains we saw in the trailer. You don't know for a fact that Ock will actually appear in the next two films any more than seeing 'Blaze Comics' or 'Star Labs' in Man of Steel means that Booster Gold and Cyborg will show up.

That's not a given. What the film was establishing was that Oscorp is creating a universe of villains for the new Spiderman films. You know a list of who they could be, but not specifically when or if they will show up.

As for why I don't believe reusing villains from previous versions of a superhero film is a problem, there are certain things you can expect from a comic book reboot of a specific comic book characters universe. That is that some of their more popular villains or enemies essential to the characters origin may reappear, but will be handled in a different way.

We're already getting two new film villains and what looks to be a whole different interpretation of The Green Goblin who will be played by Chris Cooper, not Dane DeHaann and probably won't show up in all his wonderful colors in this specific film but rather the next one. Right now he's sick in bed and nothing like Raimi's Goblin. I think reusing a main villain is fine provided you don't completely copy the previous one to the letter.

The Joker for example in The Dark Knight. He wasn't handled in the exact same way as The Joker in Tim Burton's Batman film. His character however was recycled.

Robin was in The Dark Knight Returns but he wasn't handled the same way as the Robin in Joel Schumacher's film (thankfully).

What about Lex Luthor?
We're about to potentially get a third version of him on film, yet each one has been or will be portrayed in very different ways by the actors and writers who craft them.

What about Catwoman?
She also appeared in two different Batman films and was handled creatively in two different ways.

I don't consider this 'recycling' because these villains/characters in the Spiderman film are a part of the Spiderman mythos so you can expect some of them to possibly show up again albeit in a different form, but that also doesn't mean we won't be introduced to other villains we've yet to see on film (like Rhino, Vulture, Electro, Venom, Kraven, Mysterio, Chameleon, Carnage, Morlun as you mentioned), but you have already assumed that they are out of the picture and we're only on film 2.

This is very premature.

Just because you saw Doc Ocks tentacles doesn't mean he's going to be in the next few films.

If he is, he will be handled the same way any director handles reusing a villain. You make them unique to the film you are presenting them in.

Again, there is a big difference between the two Jokers we've seen on film and that alone proves you have little to actually worry about when it comes to seeing a villain again from a past film.

I think you need to give the films more time, and wait to see the new one to form any real solid evidence that we are in for more of the same.

They've already used The Lizard, and are now working on Rhino and Electro.

Is it really fair to be upset because we also have the Goblin and Oscorp back again?

The last film I guess.
That statement doesn't necessarily relate to the Raimi films.

I imagine that what he's faced so far up to this point (The Lizard and the NYPD) are nothing compared to what he's about to face.

It seems that after what happened in the previous films, Spiderman is a bit more accepted and may even feel that there are no real big threats for him to face. That the worst (The Lizard/anti-Spiderman sentiments) was over.

This movie is going to have a turd load of subplots so there is no use hoping it won't.
Nolan does it all the time and no one complains(except me, the Nostalgia critic and RedLetterMedia... probably why I like their reviews.)
I just hate when movie makers trade character building with plot.

Maybe being a little too pessimistic at this point...

The problem with Spiderman 3 and its over crowding was that each villain and plot tried to stand out on its own...

Sandman, Venom/Eddie, New Goblin and even Peter going bad due to his exposure to the symbiote were all trying to be the main story...which obviously didn't work...

I really cannot imagine Sony making that mistake again...but could they? Maybe yeah not saying its not a possibility...

I would like to think more that the main villain is as pegged Electro and Rhino & Goblin are just minor subplots to fill in the gaps and set up future stories...

Guess we'll have to wait and see....
