Scene Description For SUICIDE SQUAD Reveals New Info About 'Harley Quinn', 'Katana', More

The latest issue of Empire Magazine doesn't reveal a whole lot about what we should expect from Suicide Squad in terms of the plot (like all of Warner Bros.' upcoming DC Comics movies, it's shrouded in secrecy), but they do have a description of a scene which sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun! It kicks off with Deadshot, Diablo, Boomerang, Slipknot, Harley Quinn, and Killer Croc on board a Chinook helicopter, joined by a small cadre of Navy SEALs. Both they and Task Force X are led by Rick Flag, but it's then that someone else joins them; Katana. The twist here however is that she's actually a volunteer, and Flag's bodyguard! Here's the dialogue from the sequence:

"She's got my back," Flag informs the Squad. "I'd advise not getting killed by her - her sword traps the souls of its victims." Harley extends her hand, perky and smirky. "Harley Quinn, nice to meetcha. Love your perfume. What is that: Stench of Death?"

That sounds perfect, but were you expecting Killer Croc to act as Suicide Squad's comedic relief? Believe it or not, it sounds as if that's the plan, with this scene also featuring him throwing up chunks of half digested goat meat on the floor of the helicopter. He then scoops it back up and shovels it into his mouth, something which makes the tough Navy SEALs recoil...Ayer hadn't given them a heads up! By far the most interesting revelation here though is the fact that Katana is a volunteer, while the mention about her sword trapping the souls of its victims definitely points to an adherence to the source material despite all the talk of these movies being grounded!

Didn't believe the talk of it being "grounded" or surrounded in "realism" a bit, clarification does help though.

Will keep my thoughts on the film tight until it drops, but so far so good.

I think people assume the wrong thing when they here grounded. Man of Steel was considered "grounded" yet we still had two super powered aliens battling it out while alien technology was destroying a city as it sought to terraform Earth. The "grounded" aspect simply applies to the fact that the makeup of the film will treat everything, no matter how absurd, as it would be treated if it were to actually exist. It's a real world setting with fantastical elements bombarding reality from every which way.

It's basically one big hypothetical question of "What if..."

This confirms the presence of magic in the DCEU even more! It's perfect and it's far better than the excuse of calling it, "a science that we can't explain".

This supports my somewhat plausible theory that Katana and Scott Eastwoods's Dick Grayson are moles for Batman.

Not telling the military actors about the goat puke, classic David Ayer.

@BestAtWhatIDo This also helps confirm SHAZAM is powered by the gods in the DCEU, with Wonder Woman being a daughter of Zeus

I think there is some confusion regarding "grounded" and "realism". Nolan might have used the terms to mean that there would be no super powers or magic, but that sort of naturalism is not what Snyder and Ayer mean by them. Instead, I think they use the term to describe their approach to characters and environments: the Suicide Squad are criminals, as criminals actually look and act. "Grounded" means approaching the Joker as if he were a real-life figure, or Clark's childhood as if he actually had unexplained, dangerous powers. In this context, both terms ask the question, "What if this happened in our world? How would we react?" In other words, it doesn't take super powers for granted.

To give an example, Iron Man 1: Tony Stark builds a functioning mech suit that is superior to the most advanced U.S. fighter jet. Yet in subsequent films, Stark is merely treated as a super hero with technology desired by the military. A more "grounded" approach might have had a more forceful response from the U.S. and other governments, who would view the Iron Man technology as a major security threat, one that, in the hands of a lone citizen, might spark a new arms race and World War 3. Ironically, with The Winter Soldier and Civil War, Marvel is becoming more grounded in its approach.

So the long rant is simply to say that grounded does not mean no super powers (realism vs. realistic), it simply means that there is a palpable real-world (i.e., messy and complex) context to these films.

DUDE! I never even thought about him playing that role! Wow, that totally fits within the parameters of the DCEU considering that Batman is older, Scott Eastwood's age (29) is totally explainable, and he does kind of look the part of Grayson.

@MPambassador

Yes! He looks the part, he can act like Grayson, and is an up and coming star!

Other things supporting this
-Dick Grayson becoming a spy with a gun around the same times as the movie ramps up.
-Batman put all of these people in prison, so he'd be keeping tabs on them.
-Katana is a long time ally of Batman. And "volunteers" conveniently.

I cant wait for that potential scene where they get figured out and the Squad is about to smash and my man Batfleck rescues em.

@TheGustache

I've had that theory for the longest time but slightly different.

Katana is the mole but Black Lightening would play a role. When Common was cast for Suicide Squad I thought "Batman, Katana, and now Black Lightening. The Outsiders."

But Common isn't playing Black Lightening so there goes that theory.

@JediPhilosopher @Kr08 Well I think the point is that magic is somewhat distinct from science because it operates according to different rules than and subverts the various scientific laws we've discovered. Sure, everything can be called a science, but the point is that it is somewhat distinct from the principles that govern matter and energy, because it is something other than matter and energy. Thor's problem was that it took a somewhat Nolan approach in making Asgardian "magic" mere advanced technology, rather than something altogether different than what we know.
