First of all, this is my first article so please bare with me. If you're still reading, thank you and let's begin.
Right off the bat, I would give the film a solid B+. Here's what I thought was good, bad, and ugly.
The Good:
Will Smith/Deadshot
One thing I was afraid of for this film was Will Smith. In the trailers, it seemed like we would get more Will Smith and less Deadshot. Part of me feels like Will Smith is becoming Samuel L. Jackson, with the same character in every movie. Additionally, I was also afraid of DC wanting him to be the focus of the film since he's their A-Lister. I am absolutely glad to say that I was wrong!! Will definitely killed it. He didn't overplay the character and balanced the father/hitman villain well while the film was balanced between the members.
The Rest of the Team
I really enjoyed the rest of the members. I believed they were each given the spotlight (with the exception of Slipknot) and each member carried their own weight. Im also very pleased with the each member getting their time to shine and show what they can really do (i.e. Croc swimming in the sewer/ Diablo and his transformation/Deadshot dispatching a small army by himself).
Rick Flagg
When I heard that Tom Hardy was no long Flagg and Joel Kinnaman (who I enjoyed in the Robocop Remake) had replaced him, I was concerned. In my opinion, the two actors are very different both looks and acting style wise. But like Smith, i was proven wrong. Kinnaman's portrayal of Flagg was superb. He added another layer to Flagg that transfered well to the Silver Screen. His version of Flagg was straight forward, fearless, but also meaningful. He added subtle emotion to the team that I thought was balanced as he was the one who had to bare the weight of the Top Secret mission information from his respective teams while also trying to keep them together as a team. Also, I thought Kinnaman held his ground well when he would go toe to toe with Smith's Deadshot. I enjoyed their relationship deeply.
The Bad:
Enchantress Second Look
Now, I'm not complaining about the character herself. What upset me was her look. Not the look we saw that came out, but her new look that we don't see in trailers. When she first changed from June Moone to Enchantress, that transformation was done extremely well. But when she was given more power by her "brother?", she totally changed. And I get it. I get the film was happy that they were able to cast this beautiful model and they wanted to show her off, but quite frankly, her look was terrible. I enjoiyed her original look and was then left with utter disappointment with her final form.
Enchantress and her World Destroyer Machine
Along with Enchantress's second look, when she was creating and controlling her world destroying machine, the effects were just so bad. Her voice didn't match her mouth too well when she spoke and when she was speaking with the team (as all villains do before the big fight) she was like dancing and it seemed so unnatural, even for some 5000 year old witch.
Enchantress's Brother
So we all heard about this theory a few months back and it so happened to be true. I didn't mind the idea of it, but I hated the effects. A huge difference I see between the DCEU and the MCU is the DCEU uses alot of practical effects, which I prefer. With the "Brother", the effects were just so bad that it reminded me of Tron. Also, this character is supposed to be God-Like but he gets killed by bomb? That was just a fail.
Some more, minor bads
Harley being the one to cut Enchantress's heart out was unneccessary. I would have preferred Flagg to be the one to do it. I felt like they did that to have a reason for Harley honestly being in the movie to do something important.
Jared's Joker was too over the top. The laugh I enjoyed, but his smile tattoo on his hand was just ridiculous.
Killer Croc was too thin. I thought his height worked, but he looked odd with such a big head and such a small body.
Batman kissing Harley was COMPLETELY ridiculous
And Lastly, The Ugly:
Of course the one and only, Killer Croc again, with a face not even a mother could love
All in all, I enjoyed the movie and believe it to be a lot more exciting then BvS. I enjoyed Leto's Joker and thought Ayer did a great job making a film about a team who really isn't a team. I look forward to any future sequels that may arise.
Thanks again everyone for putting up with my review. I hope you all go see the film with an open mind like I did. Feel free to leave a comment below. And don't worry, I won't be quitting my day job to start writing.
