THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn Confirms He's Working On Another DCEU Project After PEACEMAKER

The Suicide Squad writer and director James Gunn is putting the finishing touches on Peacemaker, but he's confirmed that another DC Extended Universe project is on the way in the not too distant future.

Warner Bros.' commitment to releasing its 2021 slate on HBO and in theaters simultaneously has backfired from a financial standpoint, hence why The Many Saints of Newark was the studio's latest box office flop this weekend. The Suicide Squad was the most noteworthy, of course, and you'd think that would have soured James Gunn on working with them beyond Peacemaker.

The studio does look set to return to the traditional theatrical model next year, so that could help repair their relationship with certain filmmakers (Christopher Nolan has, however, jumped ship to Universal).

Regardless, Gunn has now confirmed that he's in the process of developing another DC Extended Universe project. He's currently hard at work preparing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so this hopefully won't distract too much from that. If we had to hazard a guess, though, it's a project he'll fully commit to once he's finished what could be his final stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Suicide Squad's poor box office performance makes a sequel unlikely, but Gunn has expressed interest in reuniting with Margot Robbie for a Harley Quinn movie. Warner Bros., meanwhile, initially appeared to want the director to take the helm of a Superman project, so perhaps Gunn's involvement could ultimately bring Henry Cavill back to the role? We'll obviously have to wait and see.

Check out Gunn's Tweet below and keep checking back here for updates.

dracula - 10/4/2021, 9:12 AM
@bkmeijer - get paul dini to co write that, and hell yeah, I will watch
bobevanz - 10/4/2021, 3:59 AM
He'll need something to do once Guardians 3 is over, makes sense lol
Tpo81 - 10/4/2021, 4:02 AM
It’s probably something out there like Ambush Bug or Atomic Knights or something that will make everyone be like Korath hearing the name Starlord for the first time.

Loved what James Gunn did with Suicide Squad great movie that is #1 so far on my list of best movies of 2021. I like that James Gunn is actually being allowed to have the freedom to do movies the way he wants which DC allows unlike at that other company.
JDL - 10/4/2021, 4:53 AM
@John456 - Speaking as an charter member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society (this was a real thing at one time) I liked TSS. That said the 'freedom' you trumpet leads to extreme inconsistencies in the movies. That kills off any sort of carryover other than that you get with a true sequel. And of course the only sequel to date that I can think of really really made things worse.
Jeight8 - 10/4/2021, 6:38 AM
@John456 - finny cause he has said multiple times he has jsd plenty of freedom in the mcu.

But dont let facts get in the way of ypur narrative.
Uhhhhhh - 10/4/2021, 6:54 AM
@JDL - I'll take fun, unique movies with inconsistencies to connectivity any day. What made Shang Chi one of the best MCU films in recent years is the fact that it mostly stood on its own and was able to tell a nice, character-driven story with one of the best villains the MCU has ever had.
John456 - 10/4/2021, 8:48 AM
@NoerGregorio - Same I don't care about movies having connectivity and not every single Marvel movie should nor has to be apart of a shared universe. I prefer having great standalone movies to the "Everything must connect" MCU motto which is become really boring.
LameLuka - 10/4/2021, 9:28 AM
@John456 - I think you live in a different reality kid. Cause WB has been the opposite of "creative freedom" with the DCEU
John456 - 10/4/2021, 10:49 AM
@LameLuka - You really wanna go here and say that the WB/DC doesn't allow creative freedom where if they didn't we wouldn't have DC shows like what's been on the CW for years & the DC shows that are on HBO Max, if they didn't allow creative freedom we wouldn't have gotten the solo elseworld Joker movie that we got not to mention the numerous many other standalone upcoming villain movies DC has planned like a Scarecrow film, them actually listening to their fans and allowing Zack Snyder to return to the Justice League movie and give us his true vision of the film which was much better than the theatrical cut & even the rumored Ayer Cut of the first Suicide Squad they might be considering. WB/DC did ask James Gunn to make the Suicide Squad PG-13 but instead of kicking him to the curb they allowed him to make the movie he wanted to make with the rating he wanted to make it with an R rating.

Now lets go down the list or I can give you numerous links to those who have hated working for Disney/Marvel like Alan Taylor, Edgar Wright, Mickey Rourke, Scott Derrickson to name a few. Due to Feige butcher the actors performances, the directors visions and watering down and kicking them to the curb cause their vision doesn't align with his.

No Disney/Feige does not listen nor allow creative it took him months when it should've only been a few hours or a day to say Deadpool 3 would be rated R cause he really didn't wanna do it. With the upcoming Blade movie finally having their first adult oriented that will be apart of the MCU he actually had a the chance to show that he listened to people like Martin Scorsese who have criticized the MCU movies as all being the same (which most of them are) play it safe and take no risk, and his response was to make Blade woke and another typical DC movie and say that besides Deadpool he doesn't view Blade as an R rated horror character which he always has been despite what he says.
JDL - 10/4/2021, 7:56 PM
@NoerGregorio - That's your choice and I have to say since you are clearly willing to take the wheat with chaff a valid pov. It's not my pov but so f'ing what.
TheWalkingCuban - 10/4/2021, 4:09 AM
Makes sense. Good movie but it had a raw deal in terms of succeeding, as there was little chance it would. Glad they ain’t blaming Gunn!
Gizmoduck - 10/4/2021, 6:10 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - it's a success in terms of response, just not BO. It was way better that the first film.
TheWalkingCuban - 10/4/2021, 6:28 AM
@Gizmoduck - yeah I tried to convey that up there. A good movie that had a lot going against it. At least WB sees that too
JonAwesome - 10/4/2021, 4:11 AM
I am so Harley Quinned out! I hope it’s something else!
TheWalkingCuban - 10/4/2021, 6:35 AM
@JonAwesome - I think it’s the facial expressions, when I think of Harley Quinn off of the cartoon I don’t see cinstantly over the top facial expressions, just being over-the-top in general, but raising her eyebrows really high and grinning even wider than usual should have been saved for the anti moments, not the hero ones. Like a Mandrill or baboon grin. Like, get outta dodge.

Alas, it should’ve been kaley Cuoco.
Godzilla2000Zer - 10/4/2021, 8:36 AM
@JonAwesome - I've been Harley Quinned out which is why I ultimately decided not to see the movie despite being a James Gunn fan.
Moriakum - 10/4/2021, 4:16 AM
My guesses are The Harley Quinn or The Shazam.
Carnage1991 - 10/4/2021, 4:18 AM

Could be the Green Lantern Core movie ??
GhostDog - 10/4/2021, 4:37 AM
Please God no more Harley Quinn
McMurdo - 10/4/2021, 6:10 AM
TSS had a far better third act than the 2nd best cbm this year in Chi. Better characterization too.

“and you'd think that would have soured James Gunn on working with them beyond Peacemaker.”

Not when you are an artist and Hamada is giving you full creative control.

Jeight8 - 10/4/2021, 6:39 AM
@McMurdo - i found shang chi more enjoyable overall tbh.
Uhhhhhh - 10/4/2021, 6:56 AM
@Jeight8 - I agree. I loved TSS, but I thought Shang-Chi's third act was a lot stronger than people give it credit for.
McMurdo - 10/4/2021, 8:09 AM
@Jeight8 - shoulda have been a father son focused conflict. It just became a completely different movie in the third act of Chi. Cgi monster was pointless but it’s still a damn good movie I think it’s one of the best MCU films since TWS
Repian - 10/4/2021, 6:28 AM
Maybe they are working on season two of Peacemaker. I can imagine Agent Liberty as Amanda Waller's new bad boy. I'm sure James Gunn can love a boy with Jetpack.

Also, I have thought that James Gunn is perfect to work on the Adam Strange Show.

McMurdo - 10/4/2021, 8:11 AM
Hamada is smart enough to know that HBO max buried TSS before it even had a chance and he’s smart enough to know that Gunn is an auteur of the genre and should be allowed to make anything and everything he [frick]ing wants. Happy Hamada clearly gets it in this regard as DC needs this man in their court.
RubyRhod - 10/4/2021, 9:46 AM
More crap in development from this pedo

KurtLazner - 10/4/2021, 12:44 PM

@MrDitkovich - lol!
SuperiorHeckler - 10/4/2021, 1:56 PM
Whenever I look at John Cena anymore, I don't see the actor, wrestler or pop-culture personality any longer, I just see a cowering, groveling, sell-out begging for forgiveness from the Chinese Communist Party.
LSHF - 10/4/2021, 4:01 PM
From what he has been saying, he is, more or less, having the directorial time of his life with DC. After he is finished with his MCU legal obligations, I would be surprised if he works for Marvel again.
LSHF - 10/4/2021, 4:01 PM
@LSHF - But, then, I'm somewhat of a pessimist.
